Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Recoil on Shooter Performance by : W. H. Harper

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was performed to investigate the effects that weapon recoil has on aiming accuracy and on the number of shots soldiers are willing to fire. The research also investigates the possible benefits of adding a recoil- mitigating device to high recoil weapons. One hundred five soldiers were assigned to one of seven test groups, with each group firing only one of the test weapons. Five of the test weapons were shotguns of various weights and cartridge impulse levels to provide different levels of recoil energy and recoil velocity. The remaining two groups fired one of the two weapons with a recoil- mitigating device. Each test group fired five shots with a baseline weapon, followed by as many shots as they were willing to fire with the test weapon; shots were temporally spaced by approximately 30 seconds. The aiming accuracy was recorded via a small video camera mounted on the forestock of the weapon. Results showed that although significantly more shots could be fired with weapons with a recoil-mitigating device, the aiming accuracy was no better than that of weapons without the device. The higher recoil test weapons had significantly poorer aiming accuracy than the weapon with the lightest recoil, and the aiming error with the high recoil weapons was consistently above the target.
Book Synopsis Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System by : Joseph D. Hagman
Download or read book Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training with the Laser Marksmanship Training System written by Joseph D. Hagman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research compared the relative impact of two approaches for training Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM). One hundred and eighty four One-Station Unit Training (OSUT) infantry trainees (i.e., the experimental group) trained under a U.S. Army Reserve (USAR)-developed, device-based (i.e., the Beamhit Laser Marksmanship Training System LMTS) approach, and 202 infantry trainees (i.e., the control group) trained under the standard U.S. Army Infantry School BRM program of instruction. Results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on shot grouping, weapon zeroing, and known-distance firing. No between-group differences were found, however, for record fire qualification scores or for performance during pop-up target engagement practice periods leading up to qualification. The implications of these findings for initial marksmanship training are discussed along with plans for follow-up USAR-sponsored research to assess (a) the impact of LMTS-based training on sustainment performance, and (b) the feasibility of using LMTS-based performance to predict live-fire qualification scores."--Stinet.

Download or read book Advances in Physical Ergonomics and Human Factors written by Ravindra Goonetilleke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the state of the art in physical ergonomics and is concerned with the design of products, process, services, and work systems to assure their productive, safe, and satisfying use by people. With focus on the human body's responses to physical and physiological work demands, repetitive strain injuries from repetition, vibration, force, and posture are the most common types of issues examined, along with their design implications. The book explores a wide range of topics in physical ergonomics, which includes the consequences of repetitive motion, materials handling, workplace safety, and usability in the use of portable devices, design, working postures, and the work environment. Mastering physical ergonomics and safety engineering concepts is fundamental to the creation of products and systems that people are able to use, as well as the avoidance of stresses and minimization of the risk of accidents. Based on the AHFE 2016 International Conference on Physical Ergonomics & Human Factors, held on July 27-31, 2016 in Walt Disney World®, Florida, USA, the book provides readers with a comprehensive view of the current challenges in Physical Ergonomics, which are a critical aspect in the design of any human-centered technological system, and factors influencing human performance.
