Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the 1998 ice storm that caused extensive damage to trees in eastern Ontario, maple syrup producers held extensive discussions with experts on what (if any) treatments might help the recovery of ice-damaged maple stands. Two possible approaches emerged from these discussions: fertilization and understory vegetation control. This paper describes a study conducted to document effects of ice storm damage and post-storm fertilization on near-ground vegetation in managed sugar maple stands in south-east Ontario. A secondary objective was to document effects of understory vegetation control (herbicide application) in conjunction with fertilization on vegetation in those stands. Results are presented from investigations carried out on 38 treatment blocks representing the full range of ice damage intensities in the area.

Book Synopsis A Literature Review of Ice Storm Impacts on Forests in Eastern North America by : Ontario. Southcentral Science Section
Download or read book A Literature Review of Ice Storm Impacts on Forests in Eastern North America written by Ontario. Southcentral Science Section and published by North Bay : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Southcentral Sciences Section. This book was released on 1999 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizes the published literature on the following: the ecological and possible economic effects of ice storms on natural forests and plantations, including where possible the influences of past management practices; the recovery and mortality of individual trees and forests after ice storm damage; and management recommendations for ice damaged woodlots and plantations to minimize negative impacts. The literature search also superficially considered: wind and snow damage; some of the biological functions of tree reaction to wounds, crown damage, defoliation, and increased exposure; and disease and insect implications.
Book Synopsis Post-ice Storm Tree Damage in Four Eastern Ontario Woodlots by : Jennifer Kelly-Syrota
Download or read book Post-ice Storm Tree Damage in Four Eastern Ontario Woodlots written by Jennifer Kelly-Syrota and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A severe glaze storm in January 1998 affected a broad geographic region encompassing parts of eastern Canada and the adjacent north-eastern United States. Ice accumulations were estimated at over 100mm in some areas. Over 3 million hectares of forests and woodlots were damaged in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. One of the hardest hit areas was that around Winchester, Ontario. Four woodlots were studied in Winchester Township, Ontario following the ice storm to investigate post-storm damage patterns to present hardwood species. Over 1000 hardwood trees were examined for degree of damage based on percentage of crown loss. The results indicate a varied response to glaze accumulation depending on tree morphology, size, species and position in the woodlot. Based on a susceptibility index of vulnerability to ice damage ' Populus tremuloides', 'Acer rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum' and the 'A. rubrum' and 'A. saccharinum ' hybrid typically sustained severe damage. 'Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, A. saccharum, Fraxinus Americana' and 'F. nigra' sustained intermediate damage. 'Quercus macrocarpa' and 'Amelanchier laevis' sustained minor damage. Varied response to ice accumulation is dependent on location and biological factors including location within woodlot and canopy, aspect, tree diameter and height.
