Book Synopsis Animal Locomotion by : Graham Taylor
Download or read book Animal Locomotion written by Graham Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-20 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical principles of swimming and flying in animals are intriguingly different from those of ships and airplanes. The study of animal locomotion therefore holds a special place not only at the frontiers of pure fluid dynamics research, but also in the applied field of biomimetics, which aims to emulate salient aspects of the performance and function of living organisms. For example, fluid dynamic loads are so significant for swimming fish that they are expected to have developed efficient flow control procedures through the evolutionary process of adaptation by natural selection, which might in turn be applied to the design of robotic swimmers. And yet, sharply contrasting views as to the energetic efficiency of oscillatory propulsion – especially for marine animals – demand a careful assessment of the forces and energy expended at realistic Reynolds numbers. For this and many other research questions, an experimental approach is often the most appropriate methodology. This holds as much for flying animals as it does for swimming ones, and similar experimental challenges apply – studying tethered as opposed to free locomotion, or studying the flow around robotic models as opposed to real animals. This book provides a wide-ranging snapshot of the state-of-the-art in experimental research on the physics of swimming and flying animals. The resulting picture reflects not only upon the questions that are of interest in current pure and applied research, but also upon the experimental techniques that are available to answer them.

Book Synopsis Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics by : J. Gordon Leishman
Download or read book Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics written by J. Gordon Leishman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are highly capable and useful rotating-wing aircraft with roles that encompass a variety of civilian and military applications. Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

Download or read book Fluid Dynamics of High Angle of Attack written by Ryūma Kawamura and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of vortices and separation behind the bodies at high angles of attack is important for high maneuvrability of airplanes and other fluid dynamic apparatus. The recent international developments in the fundamental sciences and the application to the control of fluid behaviours were presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Fluid Dynamics of High Angle of Attack in September 1992 in Tokyo and documented in this volume.
Book Synopsis The Phenomenon of Dynamic Stall by : W. J. McCroskey
Download or read book The Phenomenon of Dynamic Stall written by W. J. McCroskey and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stall and its consequences are fundamentally important to the design and operation of flight vehicles. A certain degree of unsteadiness always accompanies the flow over an airfoil or other streamlined body at high angle of attack, but the stall of a lifting surface undergoing unsteady motion is even more complex than static stall. Dynamic stall remains a major unsolved problem with a variety of current applications in aeronautics, hydrodynamics, and wind engineering. This report summarizes the main physical features of the phenomenon and the attempts that have been made to predict it. The information presented is drawn mainly from recent review articles and investigations by the author and his colleagues. Since a large fraction of the existing knowledge has come from experimental research, the details of dynamic stall are discussed principally in physical terms.
