Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major issue of energy saving and conservation of the environment in the world is being emphasized to us to concentrate on lightweight materials in which aluminium alloys are contributing more in applications in the twenty-first century. Aluminium and its related materials possess lighter weight, considerable strength, more corrosion resistance and ductility. Especially from the past one decade, the use of aluminium alloys is increasing in construction field, transportation industries, packaging purposes, automotive, defence, aircraft and electrical sectors. Around 85% is being used in the form of wrought products, which replace the use of cast iron. Further, the major features of aluminium alloy are recyclability and its abundant availability in the world. In general, aluminium and its related materials are being processed via casting, drawing, forging, rolling, extrusion, welding, powder metallurgy process, etc. To improve the physical and mechanical properties, scientists are doing more research and adding some second-phase particles in to it called composites in addition to heat treatment. Therefore, to explore more in this field, the present book has been aimed and focused to bridge all scientists who are working in this field. The main objective of the present book is to focus on aluminium, its alloys and its composites, which include, but are not limited to, the various processing routes and characterization techniques in both macro- and nano-levels.

The property of light weight and good thermal conductivity of hypoeutectic, hypereutectic alloys such as A357 and A380 enabled automobile industries to manufacture Al-Si cylinder blocks by the method of die-casting. The cast A357 alloys with improved mechanical properties, low porosity levels, good dimensional accuracy, dimensional stability and good surface finish can be ranked as number one with respect to dimensional stability, fluidity, pressure tightness and weldability.

Book excerpt: This project is to investigate mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminium silicon alloy using sand casting. In this project there were separated into two parts which are foundry laboratory and inspection parameter. In foundry laboratory, a sand casting process was performed by using a diesel furnace to melt the raw material. Then, determinate an optimization of mass degassing agent added in the casting aluminium silicon alloy is to remove the hydrogen element in the casting product. After the casting process, an inspection parameter was performed to investigate the mechanical properties (tensile strength and hardness) and microstructure changed of the aluminium silicon alloys. From the observation of the result, a modified alloys exits slightly higher hardness values than non-modified. Since the coarseness of porosity is proportional to grain size, porosity in fine grained casting is finer and less harmful in fine-grained casting. In additional, shrinkage and hot cracking are usually associated with coarse-grained structure. So, a finer grain size minimizes shrinkage and the mechanical properties, such as tensile is better for fine grained casting than coarse-grained casting. The modified of the casting product by adding the degassing agent inside the casting will give better result mechanical properties in hardness test and tensile strength until an optimization point achieved where there is improvement of mechanical properties.

Book excerpt: The present work deals with the melt treatment of LM30 hypereutectic Al-Si alloy using cerium and strontium and the assessment of its effect on microstructure and properties of the alloy. The addition of cerium simultaneously modified both primary and eutectic silicon, leading to an increase in ultimate tensile strength, as well as the wear resistance of the alloy. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the alloy decreased on modification of the microstructure.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this work was to study the influence of the precipitate hardening treatment of the A356 aluminum silicon sand cast alloy. The experiment process was separated into three parts which was foundry laboratory, material laboratory, and inspection. In the foundry laboratory, the cast alloys was prepared by sand casting process and was melted in a diesel furnace. In the material laboratory, the casting was then treated with precipitate hardening treatment and followed by machining. The inspection was done to observe microstructure, tensile properties and hardness properties. The effect of the solution heat treatment and artificial aging holding time on the microstructure, tensile properties, and hardness properties of the alloy was analyzed. Three specimens were heat treated with a solution treatment at a same temperature of 540°C, was quenched in room temperature water followed by artificial aging at a same temperature of 170°C. The different parameters were holding times which were solution at 2 hours and aging 2 hours, solution at 2 hours and aging 6 hours, solution 6 hours and aging 6 hours. The microstructure were investigated and tested by optical microscope, tension test and Rockwell hardness test respectively. The result found was at 2 hours solution of 540 °C homogenization and saturation of magnesium and silicon in Į(Al) phase, spheroid of eutectic Si phase occurred. After solution treatment, 2 hours artificial aging at 170 °C produced hardening precipitates. Samples treated at 6 hours solution and 6 hours artificial aging achieved even higher tensile strength and hardness. The increased of holding time for solution and artificial aging increased precipitate hardening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice
