Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rates have been determined in nickel-base alloys both after a normal heat treatment and after heating for a further 10 000 h. The latter treatment causes coarsening of the ?`-particles so that they are no longer sheared by dislocations when the material is deformed. Differences in cracking rates at both ambient and elevated temperatures may be understood in terms of slip reversibility and oxide penetration when deformation occurs by shearing of precipitates.

Book excerpt: The effect of cyclic load frequency on the room-temperature fatigue crack growth response of AISI 4340 steel (tempered at 205 C) in water vapor at 585 Pa (4.4 torr) has been investigated. The water vapor pressure was chosen to avoid capillary condensation at the crack tip. Crack growth tests were conducted over a frequency range from 0.1 to 10 Hz, and a range of stress intensity factors (K). The maximum K in these tests was below the apparent threshold K for sustained-load crack growth in this environment. Fatigue crack growth rates were found to increase with the reciprocal of frequency (that is, with the period at load), and exhibited transient behavior when the test frequency was altered. By separating the growth rate into an environment independent component (pure fatigue) and an environment dependent component, it was found that the environment dependent component varied linearly with period over the frequency range 0.1 to 10 Hz. The results are correlated with the kinetics for water vapor/metal surface reactions, and with other fatigue crack growth data on high-strength steels tested in aqueous and H2S containing environments. The frequency and transient effects are discussed in terms of possible crack-tip processes. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experiment designed to study the effect of several variables on the subcritical crack growth rate of a high-strength steel in a water environment was conducted. Double cantilever beam specimens of an AISI 4340 steel were employed to study crack extension rates. The environmental variables included temperature, pH of the liquid environment, electric charging and the combined effect of pH and electric charging. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental program was carried out to further determine the range of applicability of the superposition model, proposed by Wei and Landes, for estimating the effects of cyclic loading variables and chemical environment on fatigue crack growth. AISI 4340 steel, tempered at 200°F and 500°F, and RQ360A steel were used in this investigation. The influences of frequency, stress ratio, and cyclic-load waveform were examined. The results showed that the superposition model provides correct estimates of the trend and the order of magnitude for the influences of these variables within the applicable range (that is, for Kmax > KIsee) provided that steady-state crack growth data are used. Data on the AISI 4340 steel suggest the presence of some synergistic effect of fatigue and environmental attack. Modification of this model will be needed to incorporate this effect and to improve the accuracy of predictions.

Book excerpt: The microstructural variability existing in weld heat-affected zones (HAZ) of SA533 Grade B steel has a strong influence on the fatigue crack growth rate of the material in a simulated nuclear reactor environment. In particular, considerably high susceptibility to environmentally enhanced cracking has been noted in the coarse grains of tempered martensite. This phenomenon is considered to be important not only in connection with predicting the cracking of the weld HAZ structures but also in elucidating the mechanism of crack growth enhancement in the high-temperature water environment. The materials used in the study are primarily SA533 Grade B and several other low-alloy steels including SA387, SA542, SA543, JIS SPV 46Q, and AISI 4340. Different heat treatments were given to these alloys to obtain a variety of microstructures and strengths. The results obtained show a general tendency for the crack growth rates of higher-strength materials to be more substantially accelerated in the simulated boiling-water reactor (BWR) water environment as the stress ratio is shifted from 0.1 to 0.5. In order to explore the operation of the cracking mechanism under dynamic loading, slow strain rate tests (SSRTs) were also performed. As with the cyclic crack growth rate tests, the materials with higher yield strengths exhibited highly enhanced crack growth rates and showed Ji values much reduced compared with those obtained in 288°C air. Furthermore, the crack growth rates under cyclic loading are directly compared with those obtained by the SSRT technique in terms of time-based crack growth rate in the water environment and in air by using plots of (da/dt)E versus (da/dt)air where (da/dt)E is the time-based crack growth rate in an aggressive environment and (da/dt)air is the rate in air. A satisfactory correspondence can be obtained between corrosion-fatigue test crack growth rates and those obtained by SSRTs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of 4340 steel was investigated in gaseous environments: laboratory air, hydrogen, and helium. No significant effect of specimen orientation on the rates of fatigue crack propagation was observed. In each environment, increasing load ratio decreased the threshold stress-intensity range (?Kth). The effect of load ratio on ?Kth in the air environment was, however, much more significant than that in wet hydrogen and dry environments (dry hydrogen and dry helium). At low load ratios (? 0.5), the values of ?Kth in the air environment were larger than those in dry environments. The ?Kth values in wet hydrogen were in between those in air and dry environments. At a high load ratio of 0.8, ?Kth was, however, insensitive to test environment.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth studies were conducted on Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V and Ti-6Al-4V alloys in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Each alloy was studied in two microstructural conditions and at two cyclic frequencies. Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V was heat-treated to produce a fine-grained duplex anneal microstructure and a coarse-grained Widmanstätten microstructure resulting from a beta anneal. The two microstructural conditions for the Ti-6Al-4V were an as-received mill anneal and a beta anneal. The two cyclic frequencies were 0.1 and 5.0 Hz. Each of the four alloy/microstructure combinations studied has been the subject of prior investigation regarding fatigue crack growth rate/microstructure interactions in ambient air environments. For both alloys, crack growth rates in air were found to be significantly reduced as a result of microstructural modifications associated with the beta anneal heat treatment. Although the salt water environment significantly accelerated crack growth rates for both alloys, this same ranking of fatigue crack growth resistance persisted in the present study. Both microstructures of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibited a frequency crossover effect; in contrast, no significant frequency effects were observed in Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V in either microstructure. Similar frequency effects were seen in separate specimens cycled at a single constant frequency or in single specimens cycled at two alternating frequencies. Out-of-plane cracking was observed in both alloys in the beta-annealed condition. The effects of varying degrees of out-of-plane cracking on apparent crack growth rates are noted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructure is the principal independent variable which can be used to control the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) once loading conditions and environment are established. Microstructure affects the FCGR through its influence on strain distribution (slip character), slip length, plastic zone size, and crack path. These factors, in turn, can influence both crack closure and the materials sensitivity to aggressive environments. This paper reviews the authors' perception of the current understanding of the effect of microstructure on FCGRs.
