Book excerpt: Total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations and mass losses in runoff water were significantly greater for the liquid fertilizer treatment in comparison with manure treatment. Concentrations and total losses of all P forms with runoff water were significantly greater for fertilizer treatment in comparison with manure. These losses were significantly less when manure or fertilizer was incorporated. Concentrations of all P forms were significantly greater for the higher rates of application, but similar effects on mass losses were only found for total phosphorus, particulate phosphorus, and bioavailable phosphorus (BAP). Soil test for P(STP) by agronomic and environmental tests showed that dissolved P (DP) and BAP concentrations in runoff water were best predicted by Bray 1-P or iron oxide strip-P in soil. DP and BAP total losses with runoff water were well correlated (r> 0.85) with Bray 1-P, iron oxide strip-P, and water extractable P in soil.

This study assessed the impact of P application on soil P fractions and P loss with surface runoff based on P rate field trials and both indoor and field rainfall simulations. Bray P, Mehlich-3 (M3) P, Olsen P, total P (TPS), and soil P saturation (Psat) estimated by M3 or oxalate extractable P, Fe, and Al molar ratios increased with cumulative P application (0 to 1098 kg P ha−1 after 4 to 23 yr) at plots from 11 trials. Soil test P, TPS, and Psat were linearly correlated. Routine soil P tests can approximate long-term effects of P application on TPS and Psat for soils and P ranges considered. In an indoor rainfall simulation study, Marshall, Nicollet, Fayette, Tama, and Harps (calcareous) soils were incubated with 0, 50, 125, 300, and 600 mg kg−1 P. Phosphorus application increased soil and runoff P concentrations linearly, and often at higher rates for the calcareous soil, but P relationship differences in soil or runoff were small or nonexistent across four noncalcareous soils. Three P tests, two environmental P tests (FeO-impregnated paper and water extraction), TPS, and Psat (M3, oxalate, and a P sorption index) increased linearly with P rate and were highly correlated. Environmental soil P tests and Psat indices correlated no better with dissolved reactive P (DRP), bioavailable P (BAP), or total P (TPR) than routine soil P tests. A field study assessed runoff P losses following liquid swine manure application (up to 220 kg ha−1 P) and simulated rainfall. When manure was not incorporated and rainfall was applied within 24 h, increasing P rates increased runoff P linearly and the fraction of TPR as DRP or BAP increased. When manure was incorporated, runoff P did not increase or increased only slightly. A 10 d rainfall delay sharply decreased runoff P in non-incorporated treatments, sometimes to lower levels than with incorporation. Incorporating manure when the probability of immediate rainfall is high reduces the risk of P loss in surface runoff; however, this benefit decreases with time and incorporation could lead to greater erosion and TPR loss in the long term.

Book excerpt: The effect of liquid swine manure and poultry litter applications on soil P and P losses with surface runoff and subsurface drainage were studied using rain-fed fields plots. After five years of liquid swine and three years of poultry litter applications at N based rates for the corn/soybean rotation, soil P levels had exceeded optimum levels. Injection of liquid swine manure reduced soil P levels in the surface 5 cm of soil compared to broadcast application. Bray-1, Olsen, Mehlich-3 agronomic tests and iron- oxide impregnated strip, water extractable and P saturation environmental tests were found to be highly correlated in surface soils at both sites. Total dissolved P in surface runoff was found to be curvlinearly related to all soil P tests. Estimates of P loads in surface runoff and subsurface drainage suggest that surface losses of particulate P dominated loss from the swine manure study.

Book excerpt: A field study was completed to compare the effects of land application methods, swine growth stage, and varying flow rates following the application of varying amounts of swine manure to 0.75-m by 2.00-m long plots. Three different manure sources were used to represent key different growth stages including growers, finishers, and sows and gilts. The different swine manures were applied in May and Jun 2011 to meet a 1 year nitrogen (N) requirement for corn. Three different land application methods were used to apply the swine manure, broadcast, incorporation, and injection. Runoff water quality was measured during three 30 minute simulated rainfall events. Following the third and final simulated rainfall even, inflow was added at the top of the plots to simulate increased slope length. Application method significantly affected dissolved phosphorus (DP) transport but did not affect the transport of particulate phosphorus (PP), total phosphorus (TP), NO3-N, NH4-N, or total nitrogen (TN). The disking and injection application methods resulted in significantly lower DP transport than that of the broadcast method. The growth stage significantly affected DP transport but was not found to significantly affect PP or TP transport. Growth stage also significantly affected NH4-N and TN transport but did not affect the transport of NO3-Nnutrient transport rate was found to increase in a linear fashion with increasing runoff rate. Another paper evaluated the effectiveness of a narrow grass hedge in reducing nutrient runoff loads following land application of swine manure. Swine manure was applied to 0.75-m wide by 4.00 m long plots established on an Arksarben silty clay loam located in southeast Nebraska. Manure treatments consisted of no manure application and manure application to meet the 1, 2, or 3 year nitrogen (N) requirements for corn. Runoff water quality was measured during three 30 minute simulated rainfall events. Following the third and final simulated rainfall event, inflow was added at the top of the plot to simulate increased slope length. The narrow grass hedge did not significantly affect runoff nutrient transport. Varying nitrogen application rate also did not significantly affect runoff nutrient transport. The grass hedge significantly reduced electrical conductivity (EC) measurements from 0.78 to 0.73 dS m-1 and pH values from 8.16 to 7.85. Overland flow rate did significantly affect nutrient transport rates which increased in a linear fashion with increasing runoff rate. A narrow grass hedge did not significantly reduce runoff loads of N and P following swine slurry application.

Book excerpt: The results of this laboratory column study indicated that broadcast method of manure application resulted in significantly higher average bacteria concentrations in the leaching water in comparison with incorporated method, although the significant level not 5%. A positive correlation between the manure application rate and bacteria concentrations in the leaching water, but differences in bacteria concentration was not statistically significantly different at 5% level. Highest bacteria concentrations in the leaching water were observed from columns receiving higher rate of manure application under broadcast method. These results may suggest that bacteria transport to subsurface drainage water under no-till conditions is affected by the method of manure application, surface disturbance, and soil structure. The study confirmed that active earthworm activities and decayed plant roots in no-till system can significantly contribute to the formation of microprobes resulting in large pathways in the soil profile for liquid manure to move to lower soil layers.

Book excerpt: Runoff from agricultural fields amended with animal manure or fertilizer is a source of phosphorus (P) pollution to surface waters, which can have harmful effects such as eutrophication. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of soil P status and the P composition of manure sources on P in runoff, characterize the effects of manure sources on mass loss of dissolved reactive P (DRP), total dissolved P (TDP), algal available P (AAP) and total P (TP) in runoff, and enhance the PLAT database with respect to soluble P attenuating factor (SPAF) and non-soluble P attenuating factor (NSPAF) values. Soil boxes set at 5% slopes received 7.5 cm hr-1 of simulated rainfall. Study soils included a Kenansville loamy sand (loamy siliceous subactive thermic Arenic Hapludults, a Coastal Plain soil) and a Davidson silt loam (kaolinitic thermic Rhodic Kandiudults, a Piedmont soil). Soil test P concentrations ranged from 16 to 283 mg P kg-1. Sources of P included broiler litter (BRL), breeder manure (BRD), breeder manure treated with three rates of alum (Al2(SO4)3) BRD0-0 kg m-2, BRDL-3.9 kg m-2, and BRDH-7.8 kg m-2 and DAP along with an unamended control. All manure sources were applied at 66 kg P ha-1. Water extractable P (WEP) represented an average of 10?b 6% total P in manure. Runoff samples were taken over a 30-min period. Piedmont soil contained greater amounts of clay, Al and Fe concentrations, and higher P sorption capacities that produced significantly lower DRP, TDP, AAP, and TP losses than the Coastal Plain soil. Runoff P loss did not differ for low and high STP soils of same taxonomy with the exception of AAP mass losses for Coastal Plain soil samples. Water extractable P in manures accounted for all DRP lost in runoff with DRP correlating strongly with WEP concentration (0.9961). A weak relationship between DRP in runoff and WEP applied to soil boxes was observed (R2=0.6547) and increased when a possible outlying manure treatment, BRL, was omitted from r.

Two different studies were conducted on farmers' fields using liquid swine manure on corn and soybean crops. One study used conventional research plot methodology with objectives to evaluate (a) manure P effects on early plant growth, early P plant uptake, grain yield, and P removal with grain, (b) crop response to fertilizer P applied in addition to manure P applied once for two crops; and (c) evaluate liquid swine manure P application on soil P measured with three routine soil-P tests (Bray-1 P, Olsen, and Mehlich 3 P), and two environmental tests (Iron-oxide and Water extraction). The second study used a strip-trial methodology using precision agriculture technologies and its objective was to compare three statistical methods (classical, geostatistic, and Markov randon field model) to study soil-test P spatial variability after applying liquid swine manure with variable-(VR) and fixed-(FR) rate application methods. Early growth and P uptake were not directly related to manure or fertilizer P application. Grain yield responsive sites tested less
