Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maximum Loading of a Lint Cleaner for Efficient Cleaning and Optimum Cotton Quality The efficient use of lint cleaners at gins quires that the cleaners be fed the maxim amount of cotton that they can effectively h dle. A 2-year investigation, 1974 and 1 crops, was conducted at the u.s. Cotton Ginn Research Laboratory, Stoneville, Miss, to st the effects of loading on lint-cleaner efficier cotton quality, and bale value when the clean are fed at rates up to 100 percent above nor Previous work had been conducted at rates n or below normal. The specific objectives of experiments, each of which consisted of 0 one stage of lint cleaning, were to ascertain effects of varying the amount of cotton fed a saw-cylinder lint cleaner on (1) the amo of foreign matter left in the cotton, (2) class grade and staple length, (3) fiber-length tribution, (4) number of neps in the card w (5) bale value, and (6) amount of cotton moved from the bale as waste material. D obtained in the studies reported here can used in the design and operation of controll batt saw-cylinder lint cleaners to provide maximum loading that will produce the o mum lint qualities desired by the grow ginner, and Spinner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Variations in Gin and Mill Cleaning on the Lint and Yarn Quality of Mechanically Picked and Stripped Cottons Another factor that can affect the amount of trash in cotton is whether it is picked before or after frost. Cotton picked after frost contains more trash as a result of the plant becoming brittle and thus less able to withstand the mechanical action of the picker. This study was designed to determine the ef feets of several combinations of gin and mill cleaning conditions on lint and yarn quality. In preliminary tests two lots of seed cotton were ginned without being subjected to drying or cleaning equipment. One lot was picked be fore frost, and the other lot was picked after frost. The resulting lint was considered to have excellent uniformity and to have fewer neps than lint that had been processed through the normal cleaners and driers. In addition, the trash was of large particle size, and such parti cles do not present as many removal problems at the mill as do fine particles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Influence of Gin and Lint Cleaner Combinations and Mill Cleaning on Dust Levels and Yarn Quality of Acala Cotton Dust levels appear to be influenced by the trash content in lint, increasing as the trash content increases. Cultural, harvesting, and ginning practices and varietal characteristics affect trash levels and, therefore, dust levels to varying degrees. The dust level in cotton can be reduced significantly by using lint cleaners at the gin.2 The competitive position of cotton could be enhanced by determining the optimum combination of gin conditioning and cleaning machinery for processing cotton harvested by different methods and containing different quantities of moisture and trash in order 'to obtain a bale with a minimum amount of dust. Lowered dust potential in the bale would helpthe textile mill maintain dust levels within osha standards. However, gin-processing sys tems designed to reduce dust levels must not seriously affect fiber and yarn quality. Other wise, the benefits of reduced dust levels will be offset bya reduction in yarn quality and Spin ning performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of gin and lint cleaner combinations and mill-cleaning levels on card-room dust levels and on fiber and yarn quality of Acala cotton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Seed-Cotton Moisture Level at Harvest on Ginned Lint Seed-cotton moisture level at harvest affects processing performance, fiber and seed quality, and monetary returns to the producer. Cottons harvested at different moisture levels were studied over three seasons to determine the ex tent of these effects. All cottons were harvested with a spindle pick er at moisture levels selected to approximate and percent. Actual moisture averaged and percent, with a range of percent. In the first season, all lots were processed through the conditioning system with ambient air. In the two following seasons, half the lots were processed with ambient air and half with air heated as necessary to reduce feeder-apron moisture to 6 - 8 percent. Half the lots got one stage and half got two stages of saw-cylinder lint cleaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Effects of Mechanical Picking Spindles and Handpicking on Cotton Quality and Spinning Performance in Mississippi, 1960-63 The 3 - year average fiber strength of handpicked cotton measured with the zero gage was lower than that of spindle-picked cotton. However, when measured with the -inch gage, this average was higher than that of spindle-picked cotton. Thus, there appears to be little real difference in fiber strength of lint picked by hand or by any of the three types of spindles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton production today is not to be undertaken frivolously if one expects to profit by its production. If cotton production is to be sustainable and produced profitably, it is essential to be knowledgeable about the growth and development of the cotton plant and in the adaptation of cultivars to the region as well as the technology available. In addition, those individuals involved in growing cotton should be familiar with the use of management aids to know the most profitable time to irrigate, apply plant growth regulators, herbicides, foliar fertilizers, insecticides, defoliants, etc. The chapters in this book were assembled to provide those dealing with the production of cotton with the basic knowledge of the physiology of the plant required to manage the cotton crop in a profitable manner.
