Book Synopsis Effects on Adjacent Surfaces from the Firing of Rocket Jets by : Walter E. Bressette
Download or read book Effects on Adjacent Surfaces from the Firing of Rocket Jets written by Walter E. Bressette and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a preliminary and brief account of some research currently being conducted to determine the jet effects on adjacent surfaces from the firing of rocket jets. Measurements of jet-effect pressures on a flat plate as well as shadowgraphs are presented that were obtained when a rocket jet at a Mach number of 3 was exhausted downstream and upstream into free-stream flow at a Mach number of 2 located from 2 to 4.7 rocket-jet-exit diameters from the plate. The jet effects on the flat plate with the rocket jet exhausting downstream are of the same order of magnitude as those previously obtained from sonic exits with a total pressure 10 times lower. A maximum pressure coefficient on the plate of 1.35 was obtained when the rocket jet was exhausted upstream at 2 rocket-jet-exit diameters below the plate, and an integration of the measured jet-effect pressures at this position resulted in a normal force on the plate equal to 2.3 times the thrust output of the rocket jet.

Book Synopsis From Archangel to Senior Crown by : Peter W. Merlin
Download or read book From Archangel to Senior Crown written by Peter W. Merlin and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lockheed Blackbirds hold a unique place in the development of aeronautics. In their day, the A-12, YF-12, M-21, D-21, and SR-71 variants outperformed all other jet airplanes in terms of altitude and speed. Now retired, they remain the only production aircraft capable of sustained Mach 3 cruise and operational altitudes above 80,000 feet. This is the first book to address the technical aspects of these incredible aircraft. The author describes the design evolution of the Blackbird, from the Archangel to the Senior Crown (the Air Force's SR-71.) He describes in detail the construction and materials challenges faced by Lockheed, as well as the Blackbird's performance characteristics and capabilities.A NASA historian, the author describes NASA's role in using the aircraft as a flying laboratory to collect data on materials, structures, loads, heating, aerodynamics, and performance for high-speed aircraft. The reader will benefit from the technical and programmatic lessons learned. This volume was produced in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Book Synopsis Parachute Recovery Systems by : Theo W. Knacke
Download or read book Parachute Recovery Systems written by Theo W. Knacke and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide recovery system engineers in government and industry with tools to evaluate, analyze, select, and design parachute recovery systems. These systems range from simple, one-parachute assemblies to multiple-parachute systems, and may include equipment for impact attenuation, flotation, location, retrieval, and disposition. All system aspects are discussed, including the need for parachute recovery, the selection of the most suitable recovery system concept, concept analysis, parachute performance, force and stress analysis, material selection, parachute assembly and component design, and manufacturing. Experienced recovery system engineers will find this publication useful as a technical reference book; recent college graduates will find it useful as a textbook for learning about parachutes and parachute recovery systems; and technicians with extensive practical experience will find it useful as an engineering textbook that includes a chapter on parachute- related aerodynamics. In this manual, emphasis is placed on aiding government employees in evaluating and supervising the design and application of parachute systems. The parachute recovery system uses aerodynamic drag to decelerate people and equipment moving in air from a higher velocity to a lower velocity and to a safe landing. This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.
