Book excerpt: An analysis based on a two-layer interaction model is presented for the prediction of transonic shock-wave, boundary-layer interaction with emphasis on turbulent separated flow. In this analysis finite difference techniques are used to solve the viscous layer equations, expressed in a defect form, and the stream function-vorticity representation of the inviscid flow. A global technique is used to iteratively solve these coupled sets of equations. Normal pressure gradients and imbedded shock effects are included in the analysis. Two major conclusions can be drawn from the present work: First, favorable comparisons obtained with the separated data of Kooi (Mach no. = 1.4) demonstrate that the present analysis is capable of accurately resolving many of the transonic shock-wave, boundary-layer interaction. Second, these results show that, for transonic shock induced separation, the effect of displacement thickness interaction dominates over that produced by imbedded shock effects and normal pressure gradients. Calculations made with a modified algebraic turbulence model demonstrate that for separated cases the computed results are more sensitive to the turbulence model than to whether or not normal pressure gradients are included.

Book excerpt: A strong viscous-inviscid interaction model has been developed for predicting the detailed properties of the flow in the vicinity of an imbedded transonic shock wave interacting with a turbulent boundary layer in cases where the shock wave is of sufficient strength to result in flow separation. In this interaction model the inviscid flow is analyzed with a compressible stream function analysis specifically developed for mixed subsonic-supersonic flow regions. In the present effort this analysis has been extended to include upstream vorticity effects and the boundary-layer displacement effects. Numerous calculations are presented which demonstrates the capability of this analysis to predict transonic rotational flow. The viscous analysis in this interaction model is a newly developed inverse boundary-layer analysis which accounts for normal pressure gradients and imbedded shock waves. The equations are solved with a coupled implicit finite-difference scheme subject to the condition that the flow at the edge of viscous layer merges asymptotically with the outer inviscid flow. A model problem has been analyzed with this generalized inverse boundary-layer procedure and no stability problems were encountered.

The presence of shock waves, induced by specific geometrical configurations, cause a rapid increase of the pressure, wich can lead to flow separation. Examples of such interaction are found in amongts other rocket engine nozzles, on re-entry vehicles, in supersonic and hypersonic engine intakes, and at the tips of compressor and turbine blades. The interactions are important factors in vehicle development. Both the separated flow and the induced shock have been shows to be highly unsteady, causing pressure fluctuations and thermal loading. This generally leads to a degraded performance and possibly structural failure. The current work therefore aims to improve the physical understanding of the mechanisms that govern the interaction, with a special attention for the flow organisation and for the sources of the unsteadiness of the induced shock. Additioinally, it is verified wether the interaction can be controlled by means of upstream fluid injection. PIV measurements were performed, comparing several interactions for a range of shock intensities for a number of Mach and Reynolds numbers. It is proposed that relative importance of the different unsteadiness mechanisms (upstream, downstream) shifts with the imposed shock intensity. The onset of separation is Reynolds number independent for turbulent boundary layers. The interaction length is however governed by the both the Reynolds number and the Mach number.

Book excerpt: A detailed analysis is made of weak normal shock-turbulent boundary layer interactions on longitudinally-curved surfaces for the case of non-separating steady 2-D flow. It is shown that the interactive viscous displacement effect on the local outer inviscid transonic flow eliminates the well-known singularity pertaining to a curved wall. The inner interaction solution within the boundary layer reveals that curvature moderately influences the interaction through the turbulent eddy viscosity. A non-asymptotic triple-deck solution valid over a wide range of practical Reynolds numbers is given which incorporates this effect, and example numerical results are presented and verified by comparison with experimental data. Small amounts of curvature are found to moderately spread out and thicken the interaction zone while also delaying slightly the onset of any incipient separation that occurs under the shock.
