Book excerpt: Two phase liquid and gaseous nitrogen flow in a pneumatic two fluid atomizer was investigated. Characteristic dropsize for cryogenic sprays were measured with a scattered light scanning instrument developed at NASA-Lewis. Tests were conducted primarily in the aerodynamic stripping regime of liquid jet atomization. At a sampling distance of bar-x=1.3 cm, the Sauter mean, D(sub 32), and volume median, D(sub v.5), drop diameters were measured and correlated with nitrogen gas flowrate, W(sub n), to give the following expressions: D sub 32 to the -1=210W(sub n) to the -1.33 and D(sub v.5) to the -1=150 W(sub n to the -1.33, where reciprocal diameters and gas flowrate are in cm (-1) and g/sec, respectively. The exponent 1.33 for nitrogrn gas flowrate, W(sub n), is the same as that predicted by atomization theory for liquid-jet breakup in high velocity gasflow. When the spray was sampled at axial distances of bar-x=2.5 and 4.5 cm downstream of the atomizer, the exponent decreased to 1.2 and 0.9, respectively. This was attributed to the loss of small droplets due to their rapid vaporization. Ingebo, Robert D. Glenn Research Center NASA-TM-102357, E-5071, NAS 1.15:102357 RTOP 505-62-21...

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annular flow is an important flow regime in many industrial applications. The need for a better understanding of this flow regime is driven by the desire to improve the design of many terrestrial and space-based systems. Annular two-phase flow is frequently present in the drilling, production and transportation of oil and natural gas, boilers and condensers, and in heating and refrigeration systems. The flow regime is also important for the refueling of space vehicles, and heating and refrigeration systems for space use. Past studies on annular flow have dealt with varying the gas or liquid Reynolds numbers and studying the effect of such changes on the flow regimes and pressure drops. The effect of two other relevant dimensionless groups, namely the gas-to-liquid density ratio and the gas-to-liquid viscosity ratio, on the film characteristics are noticeably absent. As well, with the increased interest in the space environment, studies on the effect of the gravitational acceleration on two-phase flow would be beneficial. The effect of the gas density and the gravitational acceleration on the annular flow average film thickness and frictional pressure drop are examined. The film thickness was measured using two-wire conductance probes. Experimental data were collected in microgravity and hypergravity aboard the Novespace Zero-G Airbus microgravity simulator and normal gravity data were collected at the University of Saskatchewan. Data were collected for a range of annular flow set points by changing the liquid and gas mass flow rates. The liquid-to-gas density ratio was examined by collecting annular flow data using helium-water and air-water. The gravitational effect on the film thickness characteristics was examined by collecting the data during the microgravity and pull-up (hypergravity) portions of each parabolic flight. A direct comparison is possible between the normal gravity data and the microgravity data, due to the matching of the liquid and gas mass flow r.

Book excerpt: Selling Out Education argues that basing education policy on qualifications and learning outcomes—dramatized by the phenomenal expansion of qualifications frameworks—is misguided. Qualifications frameworks are intended to make education more responsive to the needs of economies and societies by improving how qualifications and credentials are used in labour markets. But using learning outcomes as the starting point of education programmes neglects the core purpose of education: giving people access to bodies of knowledge they would not otherwise have. Furthermore, instead of creating demand for skilled workers through industrial and economic policy, qualifications frameworks are premised on the flawed idea that a supply of skilled workers leads to industrial and economic development. And skilled workers are to be supplied not by encouraging governments to focus attention on creating, improving, and supporting education institutions, but by suggesting that governments take a quality-assurance role. As a result, in poor countries where provision is weak to start with, qualifications have been created and institutions established to monitor providers without increasing or improving education provision. The weaknesses of many current policy approaches make clear, Allais argues, that education is inherently a collective good, and that the acquisition of bodies of knowledge provide the basis for its integrity and intelligibility.

Book excerpt: Mandela's Kinsmen is the first study of the fraught relationships between the ANC leadership and their relatives who ruled apartheid's foremost "tribal" Bantustan, the Transkei. In the early 20th century, the chieftaincies had often been well-springs of political leadership. In the Transkei, political leaders, such as Mandela, used regionally rooted clan, schooling and professional connections to vault to leadership; they crafted expansive nationalisms woven from these "kin" identities. But from 1963 the apartheid government turned South Africa's chieftaincies into self-governing, tribal Bantustans in order to shatter African nationalism. While historians often suggest that apartheid changed everything - African elites being eclipsed by an era of mass township and trade union protest, and the chieftaincies co-opted by the apartheid government - there is another side to this story. Drawing on newly discovered accounts and archives, Gibbs reassesses the Bantustans and the changing politics of chieftaincy, showing how local dissent within Transkei connected to wider political movements and ideologies. Emphasizing the importance of elite politics, he describes how the ANC-in-exile attempted to re-enter South Africa through the Bantustans drawing on kin networks. This failed in KwaZulu, but Transkei provided vital support after a coup in 1987, and the alliances forged were important during the apartheid endgame. Finally, in counterpoint to Africanist debates that focus on how South African insurgencies narrowed nationalist thought and practice, he maintains ANC leaders calmed South Africa's conflicts of the early 1990s by espousing an inclusive nationalism that incorporated local identities, and that "Mandela's kinsmen" still play a key role in state politics today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soweto uprising was a true turning point in South Africa’s history. Even to contemporaries, it seemed to mark the beginning of the end of apartheid. This compelling book examines both the underlying causes and the immediate factors that led to this watershed event. It looks at the crucial roles of Black Consciousness ideology and nascent school-based organizations in shaping the character and form of the revolt. What began as a peaceful and coordinated demonstration rapidly turned into a violent protest when police opened fire on students. This short history explains the uprising and its aftermath from the perspective of its main participants, the youth, by drawing on a rich body of oral histories.
