Book excerpt: The aim of this Advanced Research Workshop was to bring together Physicists, Applied Mathematicians and Fluid Dynamicists, including very specially experimentalists, to review the available knowledge on the global structural aspects of turbulent flows, with an especial emphasis on open systems, and to try to reach a consensus on their possible relationship to recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of low dimensional dynamical systems and amplitude equations. A lot has been learned during recent years on the non-equilibrium behaviour of low dimen sional dynamical systems, including some fluid flows (Rayleigh-Benard, Taylor-Couette, etc. ). These are mostly closed flows and many of the global structural features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, including chaotic behaviour, period doubling, intermit tency, etc. . It has also been shown that some of these flows are intrinsically low dimensional, which accounts for much of the observed similarities. Open flows seem to be different, and experimental observations point to an intrinsic high dimensionality. However, some of the tran sitional features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, specially in the intermittent behaviour of subcritical flows (pipes, channels, boundary layers with suction, etc. ), and in the large scale geometry of coherent structures of free shear flows (mixing layers, jets and wakes).

Book excerpt: One outstanding feature of the Rayleigh-Bénard problem which concerns a horizontal fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above, is the spontaneous establishment of spatial ordering and the formation of a coherent large-scale circulation. How different factors, such as the domain geometry and boundary conditions, influence the sizes and shapes of the large-scale flow remains an open question. Despite its apparent simplicity, Rayleigh-Bénard convection exhibits some incredibly rich and complex large-scale dynamics such as torsional modes, rotation, sloshing, and cessations, which often coexist and compete to each other. One approach, commonly used in the study of cessations is to constrain the large scale circulation to a plane by restricting the fluid domain to a (2-D) square cell or to a slim rectangular cell of small aspect ratio in the transversal direction. However, it is not entirely clear whether the 2-D and (quasi-)2-D reversals correspond to the same phenomenon. The present document is dedicated to the study of the large-scale flow patterns in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and of the influence exerted by different factors on the flow structures and on their temporal evolution. The proposed characterization combines a statistical analysis with a physical approach relying on the angular momentum as well as the kinetic and potential energies to highlight the underlying physical mechanisms. We subsequently attempt to tie these mechanisms together to each of the distinctive flow patterns observed and to their evolution.

Book excerpt: This book presents contributions to the 18th biannual symposium of the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB). The individual chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects. By addressing a number of essential research subjects, together with their related physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field, as well as its main challenges and new directions. Current work on e.g. high aspect-ratio and low aspect-ratio wings, bluff bodies, laminar flow control and transition, active flow control, hypersonic flows, aeroelasticity, aeroacoustics and biofluid mechanics is exhaustively discussed here.

The papers in this volume are taken from a conference held in February 1999 which brought together representatives of four different viewpoints: the computational physicist's numerical three-dimensional large-eddy simulations; theorists, who wish to simplify the equations into approximate, but useful one-dimensional recipes; astrophysicists, who see turbulence and convection as a subroutine; and experimentalists, who provide insights into what really happens at molecular levels in space - and keep everyone else honest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues previous DLES proceedings books, presenting modern developments in turbulent flow research. It is comprehensive in its coverage of numerical and modeling techniques for fluid mechanics. After Surrey in 1994, Grenoble in 1996, Cambridge in 1999, Enschede in 2001, Munich in 2003, Poitiers in 2005, and Trieste in 2009, the 8th workshop, DLES8, was held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, again under the auspices of ERCOFTAC. Following the spirit of the series, the goal of this workshop is to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS and LES techniques for the computation and modeling of transitional/turbulent flows covering a broad scope of topics such as aerodynamics, acoustics, combustion, multiphase flows, environment, geophysics and bio-medical applications. This gathering of specialists in the field was a unique opportunity for discussions about the more recent advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic or industrial situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent convective flows over rough boundaries are ubiquitous in geophysical and engineering applications. Understanding the mechanisms of these interactions is substantial for improving the heat transfer efficiency. In this work we study the effects of wall roughness on the Rayleigh Bénard turbulence. Three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed using a parallel CFD code under the support of national high performance computers. The roughness elements are embedded over hotted surface using an immersed boundary method. The numerical configuration allow the identification of three successive regimes from a thermally resistant to highly enhanced heat transfer. Through a geometrical decomposition of the rough plate into plot and surrounding fluid, we examine their different behaviors, mainly the contribution to the heat transfer. We analyze the effects of roughness on thermal and viscous boundary layers structures and on the flow physics near the wall. Besides that, the comparison with experimental data at the roughness scale highlight the non homogeneity of thermal fluctuations around the obstacles. We also focused on the effects of roughness on the flow dynamics and on the properties of thermal plumes.
