Book excerpt: The effects of initial geometric and material property imperfections on the non-linear dynamic response of cylindrical shells subjected to an underwater explosion was investigated. Finite element and boundary element programs were used to perform the analysis of the dynamic response of these shells. The geometric and material modal imperfections were introduced into the finite element models. The dynamic response and deformation of the cylinder were then compared for each of the eight modal imperfection cases to the dynamic response of a perfect cylindrical model. The modal imperfection distribution of the combined geometric and material imperfections are then introduced into an aluminum model and compared to experimental results obtained from underwater explosion testing. This analysis shows that a more accurate prediction of the damage and dynamic response is achieved by introducing these imperfection distributions into the numerical analysis.

Book excerpt: Two studies were performed to enhance the understanding of phenomena occurring in shell structures subjected to side-on underwater explosions. In the first, a numerical analysis was performed to investigate the non-linear response of cylindrical shells subjected to near-field side-on underwater explosions. In the second study, a numerical analysis of a cylindrical shell subjected to a far-field underwater explosion was compared with the results from an underwater explosion test. Sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the relative importance of various physical and numerical modelling factors.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental and numerical study of the effects of initial imperfections on the buckling response and failure of unstiffened thin-walled compression-loaded graphite-epoxy cylindrical shells are presented. The shells considered in the study have six different orthotropic or quasi-isotropic shell-wall laminates and two different shell-radius-to-thickness ratios. The numerical results include the effects of geometric shell-wall mid-surface imperfections, shell-wall thickness variations, local shell-wall ply-gaps associated with the fabrication process, shell-end geometric imperfections, nonuniform end loads, and the effects of elastic boundary conditions. Selected cylinder parameter uncertainties were also considered. Results that illustrate the effects of imperfections and uncertainties on the nonlinear response characteristics, buckling loads and failure the shells are presented. In addition, a common failure analysis is used to predict material failures in the shells.Hilburger, Mark W. and Starnes, James H., Jr.Langley Research CenterBUCKLING; DEFECTS; COMPOSITE MATERIALS; FAILURE ANALYSIS; CYLINDRICAL SHELLS; ISOTROPY; SHELLS (STRUCTURAL FORMS); BOUNDARY CONDITIONS; LOADS (FORCES)

Book excerpt: Presently, the United States Navy is searching for an improved method to predict the damage to a ship or underwater structure that results from an underwater explosion. One method of predicting this damage is through the use of nonlinear finite and boundary element analysis. Underwater Shock Analysis (USA) code combined with VEC/DYNA3D code is used for the analysis of the effect of explosive shock on numerical models. Initial geometric imperfections are introduced in the numerical model using modal imperfections. The resulting numerical model is then subjected to a simulated underwater shock using the combined USA/DYNA3D code. A sensitivity analysis is performed to look into the details on the damage resulting from these simulations.

Book excerpt: The major objective of this study was to investigate the effects of axial stiffening of cylindrical shells subject to transverse blast loadings. Two existing methods for predicting dynamic response of cylindrical shells were modified to include axial stiffening. A semi-analytical energy method was chosen as a first cut design predictor and tables of normalized deflection versus external energy imparted to the structure are presented. In addition a more detailed analytical energy method was modified to include axial stiffening. In both cases the stiffeners were introduced by simply adding terms to the kinetic and potential energy terms of the basic shell equations rather than introducing membrane-bending coupling by use of more complicated anisotropic constitutive relations. The primary results of both methods indicate that the effect of axially stiffening a cylindrical shell using stiffeners typical of those in aerospace applications is very small. Both methods have been incorporated into computer algorithms which allow an investigator to determine failure modes of blast loaded shells either by an engineering approach or a more sophisticated detailed approach. Book excerpt: "Dynamic pulse buckling, vibration and failure of laminated, composite cylindrical shells subjected to blast loading were studied. The dynamic response of the shells with orthotropic, symmetric, anti-symmetric and quasi-isotropic layups subjected to both uniform and asymmetric pressure pulse loading (side-on explosion) were examined by use of Fourier series and Lagrange's equation of motion. The solutions for the radial shell deformations were represented by Mathieu differential equations. Dynamic stability of the shells was determined from a Mathieu stability diagram. It was found that the stability of the shells were affected by lay-up, aspect ratio as well as impulse distribution. The stable vibration response of the orthotropic cylindrical shell with side-on explosion compared well with finite element solutions using an implicit dynamic analysis in ABAQUS Standard. First-ply failure of the orthotropic composite cylindrical shell was predicted using a modified Hashin-Rotem failure criterion. It was observed that the thinner shell were more likely to fail by dynamic instability, whereas the thicker shells were more likely to fail by first-ply failure."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: A theory is presented for determining critical loads for cylindrical shells subjected to large underwater explosions. The theory treats dynamic elastic-plastic buckling with fluid-structure interaction caused by a transverse incident pulse in water. The approach is by modal analysis with the displacement and velocity distributions at the end of the initial elastic response forming the initial conditions of the subsequent plastic response. The transition from elastic to plastic response is determined by the hoop mode. Experimental and theoretical final deformed shapes and pressure histories are similar. The response of a stiffened shell to a rectangular pressure pulse is characterized by isodamage curves in the pressure-impulse plane. Results show steep damage gradients when pressures and durations exceed the values that cause incipient damage, which is in agreement iwht experimental observation. (Author).
