Book Synopsis The Connecticut River by : Al Braden
Download or read book The Connecticut River written by Al Braden and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathtaking photographs of one of America's most picturesque and historic rivers The photographs in The Connecticut River follow this major waterway for 410 miles, from its origin near the Canadian border to its wide mouth on Long Island Sound, giving us a vivid portrait of a living artery of the New England landscape. Author and photographer Al Braden opens the book with an essay introducing important aspects of the river, and then presents 136 full-page color photos, ranging from close-ups to dramatic aerials, to reveal the river as few people are privileged to experience it. Readers will see and learn about the landscape, history, development, conservation, geologic formations, wildlife, flora, and, of course, the moods of the water, sky, and riverbank. Informative captions provide a wealth of information about the images, from pristine misted mornings to rich valley farmlands and modern hydroelectric turbines. Together, the images and text provide a poignant look at the river and document its centrality to the development of the unique character of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Includes select bibliography and list of resources.

Book Synopsis Interpretation and Implications of Variability in Ecological Systems by : Robert Klinger
Download or read book Interpretation and Implications of Variability in Ecological Systems written by Robert Klinger and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous hypotheses have been proposed to explain the dynamics in abundance of individual species, how species interact, how communities assemble, and how interactions between biotic and abiotic processes shape ecosystem stability. Many if not most of these hypotheses find some degree of support, but often only within relatively narrow spatial and temporal ranges. This is because conditions vary over time and from place to place, and so the strength and extent of processes that were the focus of a given a hypothesis become altered by other forces. Ecologists have confronted variability from two perspectives; conceptual and statistical. Conceptually, spatial and temporal variability are now recognized as being scale dependent and hierarchical. Statistically, there are many models that ecologists readily use that account for the hierarchical and scale-dependence of variability present in many datasets. But linking the two perspectives into a meaningful understanding of what variability means in real systems has been much less successful. For example, it is common to see studies where the fixed effects of a generalized linear mixed model are reported, but very often random effects are completely ignored or, at best, given scant attention. The likelihood of this being a significant problem increases greatly in what are rapidly becoming more common studies that utilize datasets spanning long temporal and/or large spatial scales, or when extreme and often unpredictable events (gray and black swans) occur.

Book Synopsis Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers by : Wai Hing Wong
Download or read book Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers written by Wai Hing Wong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing demand for appropriate management of aquatic invasive species in lakes and rivers worldwide. This book covers biology, invasion ecology, sightings, and control techniques of 4 invasive animals and 15 invasive plants in Massachusetts lakes and rivers. It provides valuable information on their biological characteristics and potential expansion pathways, as well as monitoring and management, including alternative management tools using updated biological, chemical, and mechanical methods. The book also includes the regulation of invasive species management to allow resource managers, biologists, practitioners, volunteers, and students a better understanding of compliance and enforcement with environmental law. An example of successful management is highlighted for each invasive species. Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers is the first book to provide comprehensive and systematic coverage and illustrations for both freshwater invasive animals and plants. Although focussing on Massachusetts, it will provide readers with the bigger picture on multiple invasive species, from prevention, early detection, control, ecological restoration, to public education. Natural resource managers in Massachusetts and surrounding states will glean the detailed and valuable information they need to learn and use to prevent and manage freshwater invasive species in the field.
