Book excerpt: Experimental data were obtained to aid in the prediction of aerodynamic loads and separation-trajectory characteristics on stores under the influence of an aircraft flow field. Four types of data were obtained in the vicinity of a generalized aircraft model: (1) flow field surveys, using a 40-deg cone probe, to determine the local velocity field, (2) force and moment data on four store models, (3) pressure distribution data on an ogive-cylinder model, and (4) captive-trajectory store separation data on one store model. The generalized aircraft model consisted of a swept-wing/fuselage combination with rectangular, flow-through engine ducts.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of the investigation of wing-alone and wing-fuselage combination employing a delta wing having 45 degree sweepback of the leading edge, aspect ratio 4, and an NACA 65A006 airfoil section. Lift, drag, pitching moment, and root bending moment were obtained for these configurations. In addition, effective downwash angles and dynamic-pressure characteristics in the region of a probable tail location also were obtained for these configurations, and are presented for a range of tail heights at one tail length. In order to expedite publishing of these data, only a brief analysis is included.

Guy and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been made of two unswept, partial-span, flap-type controls (differing only in hinge-line location) mounted on a 60 degree delta wing. One control was unbalanced and the other has a 100-percent overhang balance. Control hinge moments as well as aerodynamic characteristics of the complete wing-body combination were obtained for control deflections from 0 to 40 degrees over an angle-of-attack range of plus or minus 12 degrees at Mach numbers from 0.75 to 1.96. Reynolds numbers varied between 2,200,000 and 2,200,000. Expressions derived from linear theory for the hinge-moment coefficient due to angle of attack for unswept partial-span controls (which extend neither to the wing tip nor to the wing center line) on triangular wings having subsonic leading edges are given in an appendix.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel test program and an analytical study were conducted to investigate aerodynamic hysteresis phenomena on the F-4 aircraft. The wind tunnel test was conducted in the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (4T) to investigate the source of aerodynamic hysteresis in static aerodynamic data. The wind tunnel test also provided data that were used in a motion simulation study of the effect of hysteresis on predicted aircraft motion. Static longitudinal lateral directional force and moment data and wing pressure data were obtained on a 0.5-scale model (without pylons or external stores) with various simulated leading-edge slats. These data include the effects of Mach number, angle of attack, model movement, and time dependence on the aerodynamic hysteresis characteristics. Data are presented for the Mach number range from 0.7 to 0.95 at angles of attack from -4 to 24 deg at zero deg sideslip angle and for sideslipe angles from -12 to 12 deg at angles of attack of 5, 10, 15, and 20 deg. Six-degrees-of-freedom motion simulation studies were used to assess the effect of hysteresis in the rolling-moment coefficient on the prediction of aircraft motion. Simulations of various flight maneuvers were conducted both with and without hysteresis in the aerodynamic data. (Author).

Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the effects of several wing leading-edge modifications on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 45 degree swept-wing fighter-airplane model has been conducted in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel at low and high lifting conditions at Mach numbers from 0.85 to 1.03. The investigation included the determination of the effect on longitudinal stability and performance characteristics of wing leading-edge and chord-extension droops of 6 and 20 degrees, chord-extension overhangs of 0.075c and 0.15c (where c is the wing chord), leading-edge notches cut out at the inboard end of the 0.075c chord-extension to depths of 0.075c and 0.125c, and indentation of the model fuselage to conform partially to the supersonic area rule for a Mach number of 1.20. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data were obtained for configurations with the tail on and off. Comparisons of data obtained from the present model with data from a configuration with leading-edge slats are included.
