Book excerpt: Black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) and other forest herbivores depend on abundant and nutritious understory vegetation found in open-canopy and young, early-seral forests. Forage management activities such as logging, thinning and using silvicultural herbicides have the potential to alter the quality and quantity of forage available to herbivores. Therefore, I compared nutrient intake and estimated nutritional carrying capacity of black-tailed deer between stands that received herbicide treatments paired with those that did not in Douglas-fir/western hemlock forests of western Washington, and investigated how these responses change as forests age from early seral stages to canopy closure (2 -- 20 years post-harvest). I measured understory vegetation biomass, plant species nutritional quality, and overstory characteristics of each forest stand. Additionally, I measured diet composition, diet quality and nutrient intake of tractable black-tailed deer within each paired stand. I found that herbicide use decreased the amount of understory biomass useable for foraging deer and decreased their daily digestible energy intake, especially in the first 3 years of stand establishment. Even so, early seral habitat, regardless of herbicide use, provided more forage and higher daily energy intake for deer than closed canopy stands (14 yrs +) or mid-seral stands. Using data from these experiments, I also investigated how the resolution of data collection (e.g., plants vs. plant parts) influences estimates of plant selection and nutritional carrying capacity, and how well measures of forage abundance and quality predict nutrient intake of black-tailed deer. I found that treating plant parts (i.e., stems and leaves) as separate food items did not influence how plant species were categorized as selected, neutral or avoided, but increased estimates of nutritional carrying capacity. In addition, measures of forage resources that included both biomass and quality or selection status by deer better predicted daily digestible energy intake of tractable black-tailed deer.

Book excerpt: Spruce budworm defoliation, clearcutting for salvage, and prescribed burning of clearcut areas on deep and shallow soils influenced deer and moose foraging in eastern Maine spruce-fir forests from 1980 to 1984. Plant standing crop biomass, seasonal plant selection by tractable moose and white-tailed deer, and digestible energy for deer and moose were determined for each treatment. Early successional plant species were most abundant on burned areas, and were common on clearcut areas. Increase in biomass after defoliation was substantial. Deer and moose ate many of the same plant species, but in different proportions. Deer found more desirable foods on deep than on shallow soils and were more selective of plant parts than moose. Deer digested their diets slightly better than moose from late spring through fall. Deer obtained more digestible energy than moose during fall and early winter on all treatments. Moose obtained more digestible energy than deer during spring and summer on burned areas where forage was abundant. Available energy by treatment was significantly different for moose year round and for deer during spring and fall: clearcut and burn clearcut >defoliated >undefoliated (control).

Book excerpt: Historically, low-elevation dry forests in the inland northwest were structured to support light fuel loads and frequent low-severity fires. More recently, fire suppression has shifted the structure of these forests to have thick, continuous overstories with densely-stocked trees, and heavy fuel loads that can lead to high-severity, stand replacing wildfires that may threaten human safety and further alter natural forest communities. In addition, closed canopy, densely-stocked forests reduce light penetration to the forest floor, which can limit production of herbaceous and woody understory vegetation that can serve as forage for native herbivores. To restore historic conditions, promote healthy forests, and reduce wildfire risk, forest managers have implemented fuels reduction treatments. To determine whether these treatments improve the quality and quantity of forage resources for deer, we measured biomass, plant species composition, and nutritional quality of understory vegetation in treated and untreated forest stands that ranged from 2 – 20 years since treatment and 2 – 100% canopy cover in the Colville National Forest of northeastern Washington. We also measured diet quality and composition, nutrient intake, and foraging mechanics of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) using bite-count methods with tractable, hand-raised deer. In addition, we tested the ability of LiDAR-derived metrics of understory vegetation density to determine understory vegetation biomass remotely. Our results showed that understory vegetation biomass roughly doubles with a 50% reduction of canopy cover from fuels reduction treatments, and that the biomass of plants that are most important to deer increases with time since treatment, but begins declining approximately 14 years post-treatment. Increases in understory vegetation biomass, in turn, allowed deer to harvest food faster and increase their daily intake of digestible energy, which allowed them to meet maintenance requirements of dietary digestible energy and protein in our sample sites. Book excerpt: Composition of diets selected by tame but free-ranging deer in a natural forest environment was studied throughout a 24-month period and summarized by mean monthly percentage composition on the basis of dry-matter intake. A modification of the standard bite-count method of diet determination was used. All forages were identified by species and plant part (leaf, twig). Major forages comprising the diet were identified seasonally and considered in relation to their role in the nutritional ecology of the deer. Overall, a simple but consistent pattern was evident in the data. When green, leafy forages (herbs and shrub leaves) were available, they were consistently targeted by the foraging deer, but as they became less available in winter, and especially with their burial by snow, diet composition shifted to less digestible woody forages (shrub twigs and conifer foliage) supplemented with highly digestible arboreal lichens. Although a wide array of potential forages are available during the growing season, dietary options shrink to a narrow range of important evergreen forbs, a few ferns, shrub twigs, and lichens in winter.
