"Focusing on fluency, reading aloud accurately with expression and comprehension, has been named one of the five pillars of scientific reading instruction" (Allington, 2009 p. 6). The ability to read fluently impacts all areas of reading. "If automaticity is the fluency link to word recognition, prosody completes the bridge by linking fluency to comprehension" (Rasinski, 2012, p. 519). Exploring the connections between poetry, fluency, and motivation allows teachers to positively influence readers of all abilities.

All second grade students at a suburban elementary school in the upper Midwest were benchmark assessed to evaluate their reading fluency ability. Based on the benchmark assessments, five students were selected to receive reading intervention using the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System. The study focused on the correlated daily book reads and poetry books and the effect they have on student fluency. Reading fluency data was collected on a weekly basis and comparisons from students' baseline scores was made to determine if fluency growth was occurring. The data was triangulated and compared to determine the growth students made. The research suggested that poetry reading daily did help students achieve greater gains in their reading fluency.

Book excerpt: Due to the increasing pressure to meet Common Core State Standards for more essential curriculum components, poetry is often an overlooked foundation of the literacy curriculum. Students today demonstrate a lack of knowledge in the genre poetry. In spite of this, poetry is an important Common Core English Language Arts standard which asks K-12 students to be fluent in and identify parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza. This qualitative study aims to identify ways to implement poetry in the classroom on a consistent basis to promote student confidence, reading fluency, word recognition, engagement, connection, and comprehension. Third grade students were pre assessed and post assessed using reading attitude surveys, 3rd grade Dolch sight words, and DRA2 reading assessments to measure fluency and accuracy. My prediction for the study was students' reading confidence would increase allowing for growth in reading attitudes and reading fluency and accuracy.

This research was conducted in a First Grade classroom with ten subjects. The treatment lasted for nine weeks with pretests and posttests administered the first and last weeks of the study. Data taken included nonsense word recognition, words per minute read, and anecdotal journals. At the beginning of each week, the five subjects in the treatment group conferenced with the teacher about a new poem. The subjects took home the poem and practiced it with an adult for four days. Subjects (or their guardians) documented the number of minutes read each night on verification sheets. Data were compiled, triangulated and analyzed to form conclusions. Results from this study showed an increase in reading fluency of both the treatment and comparison subjects during the nine week treatment period. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether implementing 15 minutes of daily, direct fluency instruction using poetry to model phrasing, rate and expression, with opportunities that allowed students practice for rereading would result in increased reading fluency rate. This research was conducted with twenty-three second-grade students during the first ten weeks of the school year. For this study, the researcher used a quantitative, preexperimental design. This method is known as a one-group pretest/posttest design. Results were measured using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Nonsense Word test. the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency probes and the Language Arts Primary Observation, and assessment used by the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Each fluency lesson was organized into four components: a focus on meaning, modeling, guided practice and in dependen practice. A variety of echo and choral reading activities helped students attain fluency with the passage alongside a fluent reader, which in this case was the researcher. The assisted reading activities took place multiple times throughout the week for reinforcement and practice. The data indicated an overall increase in reading fluency rate for the students involved n the study.

Student progress was measured using three data tools. Baseline data were gathered through the use of running records. Parent opinions were collected through the use of a survey at the beginning and conclusion of the study. These data tools were all used to measure the effect repeated readings.and performance of poetry had on student fluency. All students involved in the study were fluent at grade level, or on track to be fluent at grade level, by the conclusion of the school year. Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

The study was conducted ina first grade regular education classroom with 23 students. The date was collected for eight weeks. The Language Arts Primary Observation was given before and after the treatment. A survey was given to parents before and after the treatment. Data was collected weekly over cold reads and tracked for potential growth during the weekly treatment. In my classroom, each student gained growth weekly. Student 1 went up three levels on the LAPO assessment. Student 2, 4 and 5 went up two levels on the LAPO assessment. My results indicated that students' fluency scores made considerable increases.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using repeated reading of poetry as a strategy to increase third graders' reading fluency scores. This study utilized a quasi-experimental one group pretest/post test design. The researcher implemented one poem per week, for a nine-week period, with a group of six third grade students. The study was conducted during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. The Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores, as well as a post test for an indicator of progress. An anecdotal journal was used to document observations about student progress during the study. Six selected students received daily instruction on one poem per week. After being introduced to each poem. students were asked to practice reading the poem independently, with a partner and in a small group. On the last day of each week the researcher collected fluency data by timing and listening to each student. A comparison group of six different students with similar reading abilities were given the BRI pre/posttst. In comparing the performance data of the two groups, the treatment group showed a significant growth. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of simple poems as a strategy to increase fluency.

Book excerpt: Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of singing-integrated reading instruction on the oral reading fluency and motivation of elementary students in an after school program. Participants were third graders (n = 29) who attended the singing-integrated oral reading fluency (SI ORF) intervention twice a week for eight weeks. Components of the intervention included teacher-modeling of fluent oral reading, oral support, repeated reading and singing activities from a variety of children's literature, and individual free-time. The adapted Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS; McKenna & Kear, 1990) measured recreational, academic, and composite reading attitudes. The Qualitative Reading Inventory -- 5 (QRI-5; Leslie & Caldwell, 2011) measured the following fluency components: Word Recognition in Isolation (WRI), both Correct Automatic and Total Number Correct, Word Recognition in Context (WRC), and reading rate, calculated as Words per Minute (WPM). Pretests and posttests for components of both assessments were compared using paired-samples t- tests. Data analyses of adapted ERAS mean percentage scores revealed a statistically significant decline in recreational reading attitude, no statistically significant difference in academic reading attitude, and a decline that approached significance in participants' overall reading attitudes. QRI-5 scores revealed a statistically significant increase from pretest to posttest in WRI Correct Automatic, WRI Total Number Correct, WRC, and reading rate scores. The after-school environment offered a viable option for SI ORF instruction and was free from restraints that can accompany high-stakes testing environments in the traditional school setting. Overall, participants were attentive and enthusiastic, particularly enjoying the singing and repeated lyrics components of the intervention.

The study was carried out in one second grade classroom over the course of 12 weeks. Data was collected in the form of pre- and post-assessments for each of the three units. The results of the study indicate that over the duration of the study, Readers' Theater helped maintain and improve oral reading rates and prosody for second grade students. Although the data did not indicate that Readers' Theater had a direct impact on reader's attitudes, the students enjoyed Readers' Theater. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.
