Students either did, or did not, receive (over a 12-session period) instruction in these decoding programs. Students' decoding skills were evaluated based using the Gray Diagnostic Reading Tests-2nd Edition (Phonetic Analysis subtest). Results were analyzed according to treatment group and individually, according to disability-visual processing or auditory processing. No statistically significant differences between participant and non-participant groups were found due in part to the small sample size. Recommendations for continued research focus on a duplicate study on a larger scale and studies of the effects of Wilson Reading System and Fundations on other essential elements of literacyincluding fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Book excerpt: This study used pre-and post-assessment data to measure the effectiveness of small group instruction in decoding skills, shared readings, and repeated readings on the comprehension and fluency level of middle school students enrolled in special education. The participants in this study were selected due to their "below basic" or "far below basic" scores on the California Standards Test (CST) and/or a below grade level reading level. The research addressed the question, "Does direct instruction in decoding, repeated readings, and shared readings have an impact on the decoding abilities and comprehension of middle school students enrolled in special education?" The 16 participants were assessed before the intervention started and again after the 60-day intervention. The researcher used three assessments to collect data. The researcher compared the pre-and post-intervention data to determine a pre-and post-intervention learning rate for each student. The researcher was able to compare these rates to determine growth during the intervention. The data shows that 10 of the 16 participants made progress on their reading scores during the 60-day intervention. Some possible factors that may have impacted the learning rate of the participants were discussed. Key words: Literacy direct instruction, special education, reading fluency, middle school students

Participants were between the ages of 8 to 10 years from a community-based program for children with learning disabilities and a single-case research (SCR) design was employed. An adapted version of the RAVE-O intervention was delivered which focused on instruction in phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, and morphology in building children's word-level fluency skills. Norm-referenced word-level reading, decoding, and reading comprehension measures were collected at pre- and post-test, and progress monitoring data via curriculum-based measures were also collected. Overall results based on percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) analyses indicated moderate effects for decoding fluency and reading comprehension and small effects for decoding accuracy and reading fluency. Implications for educators and professionals working with elementary school students identified with reading difficulties are discussed.
