Second, in what ways can additional one-to-one reading intervention, along with small group instruction influence students' reading behaviors? The study found that, with additional one-to-one intervention, along with small group instruction, and with the use of Corrective Reading curriculum did have a positive impact on students' reading skills and reading behavior.

These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting difficulties in learning how to read. The difficulty using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme and phoneme to the word reading construction characterizes the dyslexia, which is a specific learning disorder with a neurological source. These difficulties presented by students with dyslexia interfere in their learning process impairing the learning development. Knowing and following the reading development and its processes, as well as obtaining the punctuation of fluency abilities and students comprehension allow us to understand what happens when the student presents difficulties to read. This could help in the identification of learning disabilities and in the development of intervention programs.

Part I explains fluency in reading from both traditional and modern perspectives. Fluency has historically been viewed as the outcome of other reading-related factors and has often been seen as a convenient measure of reading skills. This book, however, argues that fluency has a strong impact on other aspects of reading and plays a central role in the entire reading process. Part II deals with the determinants of reading fluency. Chief among these is the speed of information processing in the brain. Using both behavioral and electrophysiological evidence, the book systematically examines the features of processing speed in the various brain systems involved in reading: visual-orthographic, auditory-phonological, and semantic and shows how speed of processing affects fluency in reading. Part III deals with the complex issues of cross-modal integration and specifically with the need for effective synchronization of the brain processes involved in reading. Book excerpt: The present study examined through a comparative research study the effects of the Wilson Reading System and Fundations on the decoding skills of students with disabilities in grades 2 through 5. Students either did, or did not, receive (over a 12-session period) instruction in these decoding programs. Students' decoding skills were evaluated based using the Gray Diagnostic Reading Tests-2nd Edition (Phonetic Analysis subtest). Results were analyzed according to treatment group and individually, according to disability-visual processing or auditory processing. No statistically significant differences between participant and non-participant groups were found due in part to the small sample size. Recommendations for continued research focus on a duplicate study on a larger scale and studies of the effects of Wilson Reading System and Fundations on other essential elements of literacyincluding fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Book excerpt: This study used pre-and post-assessment data to measure the effectiveness of small group instruction in decoding skills, shared readings, and repeated readings on the comprehension and fluency level of middle school students enrolled in special education. The participants in this study were selected due to their "below basic" or "far below basic" scores on the California Standards Test (CST) and/or a below grade level reading level. The research addressed the question, "Does direct instruction in decoding, repeated readings, and shared readings have an impact on the decoding abilities and comprehension of middle school students enrolled in special education?" The 16 participants were assessed before the intervention started and again after the 60-day intervention. The researcher used three assessments to collect data. The researcher compared the pre-and post-intervention data to determine a pre-and post-intervention learning rate for each student. The researcher was able to compare these rates to determine growth during the intervention. The data shows that 10 of the 16 participants made progress on their reading scores during the 60-day intervention. Participants were between the ages of 8 to 10 years from a community-based program for children with learning disabilities and a single-case research (SCR) design was employed. An adapted version of the RAVE-O intervention was delivered which focused on instruction in phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, and morphology in building children's word-level fluency skills. Norm-referenced word-level reading, decoding, and reading comprehension measures were collected at pre- and post-test, and progress monitoring data via curriculum-based measures were also collected. Overall results based on percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) analyses indicated moderate effects for decoding fluency and reading comprehension and small effects for decoding accuracy and reading fluency. Implications for educators and professionals working with elementary school students identified with reading difficulties are discussed.
