Book excerpt: The impact of computer-assisted cooperative, competitive, and individualistic instruction was compared on student achievement and attitudes. Seventy-three eighth-grade students were randomly assigned to conditions stratifying for sex and ability. In all conditions students completed the same computer-assisted instructional unit. Results indicate that computer-assisted cooperative instruction promotes greater quantity and quality of daily achievement, more successful problem solving, and higher performance on factual recognition, application, and problem-solving test items than do computer-assisted competitive or individualistic learning. The attitudes of females, compared with males, were adversely affected within the competitive condition.

Book excerpt: This book was written and edited as a project of the International Asso ciation for the Study of Cooperation in Education (lASCE). It grew di rectly out of the second conference of the lASCE, held at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in [uly 1982. The chapters in the book were originally presented in some form at the Provo conference, though most have been considerably revised since that time. This is the second book sponsored by the lASCE; the first, Cooperation in Education (Provo, Utah:Brigham Young University Press, 1980), edited by Shlomo Sharan, Paul Hare, Clark Webb, and Rachel Hertz-Lazarowitz, was based on the proceedings of the first conference of the IASCE in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1979. The IASCE is a group of educators interested in studying, devel oping, or applying cooperative methods at various levels of the process of education. It includes researchers, teacher educators, teachers, and school administrators from more than a dozen countries.

Book excerpt: EdPsych Modules uses an innovative modular approach and case studies based on real-life classroom situations to address the challenge of effectively connecting theory and research to practice. Succinct, stand-alone modules are organized into themed units and offer instructors the flexibility to tailor the book’s contents to the needs of their course. The units begin with a set of case studies written for early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary classrooms, providing readers with direct insight into the dynamics influencing the future students they plan to teach. All 25 modules highlight diversity, emphasizing how psychological factors adapt and change based on external influences such as sex, gender, race, language, disability status, and socioeconomic background. The Fourth Edition includes over three hundred new references across all 25 modules, and expanded coverage of diversity in new diversity-related research.

Book excerpt: This volume captures contemporary global developments in cooperative learning (CL) across varied educational contexts, levels, and disciplines. Cooperative learning is widely recognized as a pedagogical practice that promotes socialization and learning among students, from kindergarten to tertiary education and across different subject domains. With chapters from contributors throughout the Global North and South, this comprehensive volume offers a wide-ranging perspective and addresses a range of cooperative learning pedagogies including relational, online, and peer learning, STAD, the Jigsaw model, and dialogic talk. The chapters draw on novel empirical research and theory to highlight best practices in cooperative learning, whilst also considering the challenges, limitations, and factors which drive or inhibit learner engagement and success. Consistent attention is given to the pivotal role of the educator in implementing cooperative learning to maximum benefit to enhance students’ affective, social, cognitive, and metacognitive learning. Thus, this book will appeal to scholars and researchers across a variety of subjects; and will provide an additional benefit to in-service and pre-service educators who already practice cooperative learning in their classrooms, as well as those who are interested in implementing the model.
