Book excerpt: This study examined how community violence exposure has influenced the motivation of high school students living in an urban Midwest low income, high crime community to attend college. Of the forty-one students who were given the questionnaire, only 36 students completed and submitted it. Of the 36 students who completed the survey, 35 were invited to participate in focus groups, as only one student stated that he/she had neither experienced any traumatic events nor witnessed community violence. A total of 12 students, mostly seniors, submitted signed permission slips and agreed to participate in the focus groups. Of the 12 participants, 100% reported having witnessed or experienced community violence. Two focus interview sessions were conducted with student participants who were currently enrolled in high school. The emphasis of the focus groups was on participants' experiences and how they related to the tenets of the Trauma Theory, as well as any factors that influenced student motivation to attend college. Three themes emerged and were derived from the findings: motivation, resilience, and support. This present study underscored the significance of finding and maintaining positive and supportive relationships, especially after exposure to trauma.

Book excerpt: The identification of protective factors that might modify the negative effects of community violence (CV) is key for prevention efforts and the promotion of resilience among at-risk children and adolescents. The present study examined the relation between direct exposure to CV and children's social skills, externalizing and internalizing behavior problems, and academic competence in a sample of 125 African-American and Latino fifth-grade children across a nine month period. Of particular interest was the potential moderating or protective effect of positive school experiences and perceived peer acceptance in these relations. Results revealed that most children were victims of CV, with victimization status remaining relatively stable across the two time points. CV exposure was significantly associated with increased internalizing problems and decreased academic competence initially and with decreased social skills and increased externalizing problems across time. With the exception of social skills, these effects were the same for boys and girls and African-American and Latino children. Overall, analyses found no buffers of the effects of CV exposure on social skills, internalizing problems, and academic competence, but provided some evidence that being helped by other students and having a high total number of positive school experiences may help protect children from the adverse effect of CV on externalizing problems. Implications of the impact of CV exposure, as well as the moderating effects found are discussed.

Book excerpt: I constructed a unique set of data from over 300 California law enforcement agencies, in conjunction with large-scale education microdata covering the high school outcomes of over 3.8 million California ninth-graders from the classes of 2003 to 2014 to examine the extent to which estimated effects of violence exposure, coupled with significant differences in violence exposure rates, contribute to population-level differences in educational attainment. I find evidence for two important processes linking violence exposure and educational attainment. [1] High school dropout rates significantly respond to gun violence only if exposure exceeds a certain threshold. This threshold rule, coupled with differential exposure rates across student subgroups, leads to significant exposure effects on the dropout rates of black and Hispanic students, and no significant effects for white and Asian students. [2] Learning loss does not appear to be the primary mediator of exposure effects on dropout rates. This suggests that dropouts in high violence areas often have the academic capacity for educational attainment beyond realized levels.
