Book excerpt: In 1901, the Landsburg Diversion Dam was established in the middle of the Cedar River in Washington, effectively cutting off access to habitat for migrating salmon populations. For a hundred years, no salmon dwelled in stream reaches above the dam, but the resident cutthroat trout populations remained. This was the case until 2003, when a fish ladder was built into the Landsburg Dam, reopening passage to spawning habitat for salmon and reintroducing the species to existing trout populations. In this project, coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and cutthroat trout (O. clarki clarki) were used to study the competitive effects of recolonization in two neighboring streams, Rock Creek (salmon present) and Williams Creek (salmon absent), in the Cedar River watershed. Though it has been found that opening up passageways to previous spawning sites leads to successful recolonization of the target species, few studies have determined if reintroducing a species to an ecosystem that has survived without it for so long has negative effect on resident species. Previous studies determined that salmon exert dominance over cutthroat trout in certain conditions. Conversely, some recent studies have found no negative impact on cutthroat trout from coho salmon recolonization. Species population densities were computed and tested for correlation to observe temporal and spatial population trends and determine if coho negatively influence the population dynamics of cutthroat trout. Our results indicate that both species populations in Rock Creek are growing since the fish ladder was built. However, coho populations are growing more rapidly than the cutthroat trout in the shared stream. However, the trout population in Williams Creek is growing at a faster rate than that of the trout in Rock Creek. Nonparametric testing indicated that there is a significant and positive relationship between coho and cutthroat pool densities, thus refuting our hypothesis. Our results suggest that there is not a significant competitive effect as a result of the coho recolonization. Stream conditions could be improving for both species and aiding in population growth. Future testing should compare the mixed stream (salmon present) with more isolated streams (salmon absent), like Williams, to confirm if the discrepancy between cutthroat trout population growths, in habitats without salmon versus habitats with salmon, is a result of the coho presence or if it is due to improved habitat conditions in general.

Book excerpt: The behavior and stream habitat utilization of juvenile hatchery-reared coho salmon (Ovicozihynchus kisutch) and wild cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) were examined to assess the nature of interactions between the species potentially resulting from introductions of hatchery coho salmon in streams. Habitat utilization was monitored in Mill Creek, Polk Co., Oregon by manipulating the composition of fish within three study sections to include either allopatric or sympatric populations of hatchery coho salmon and wild cutthroat trout. In allopatry, coho salmon and cutthroat trout selected feeding microhabitat that was similar in physical characteristics and exhibited extensive dietary overlap. When the two species occurred in sympatry, feeding microhabitat used by coho salmon was altered, however, that of cutthroat trout was comparable to allopatric cutthroat trout. No discernable differences in dietary composition between allopatric and sympatric fish were detected. While allopatric cutthroat trout always gained mass. ailopatric coho salmon always lost mass. Stomach fullness indices were higher for allopatric cutthroat trout than allopatric coho salmon. Sympatric cutthroat trout had comparable or greater gains of mass, indices of stomach fullness, and hepatic glycogen reserves relative to allopatric cutthroat trout. Conversely, sympatric coho salmon had greater losses of mass, reduced hepatic glycogen reserves, and apparently lower indices of stomach fullness than allopatric salmon. Behavioral observations made through the use of an in-stream viewing chamber in Berry Creek, Benton Co., Oregon, indicated that in allopatry populations of hatchery coho salmon and wild cutthroat trout were structured as linear dominance hierarchies that were organized by quantitatively and qualitatively similar aggressive interactions. In sympatry, however, cutthroat trout were more aggressive and socially dominant to coho salmon. The shift in use of micro-habitat and reduction in habitat utilization effectiveness of hatchery coho salmon in the presence of cutthroat trout can, thus, be interpreted to occur as a result of interference competition mediated through interspecific aggression.

Book excerpt: Anthropogenic hybridization is one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. Hybridization and introgression may lead to a loss of locally adapted gene complexes and ecological adaptations in native populations, yet these potential consequences have not been fully evaluated in nature. I investigated factors influencing the spread of hybridization between native westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi) and nonnative rainbow trout (O. mykiss) in the upper Flathead River system, Montana (USA) and British Columbia (Canada). The fundamental questions of my dissertation were: what are the behavioral, ecological, and fitness consequences of hybridization and what factors influence successful invasion of hybrids? First, I assessed the patterns of spawning between parental species and their hybrids and found that hybridization alters the spawning behavior of migratory westslope cutthroat trout, and is spreading via long distance dispersal of hybrids from downstream sources and some temporal overlap during spawning. Second, I describe for the first time how a wide range of levels of nonnative admixture affect fitness of cutthroat trout in the wild by estimating reproductive success in a recently invaded stream using parentage analysis with multilocus microsatellite markers. Small amounts of hybridization markedly reduced reproductive success, with fitness exponentially declining by ~50% with 20% nonnative genetic admixture. Finally, I evaluated the association of local-habitat features, landscape characteristics, and biotic factors with the spread of hybridization in the system, and found that hybridization increases in streams with warmer water temperatures, high land use disturbance and close proximity to the source of hybridization; however, none of these factors appeared sufficient to prevent further spread. These combined results suggest that hybrids are not only genetically different than westslope cutthroat trout but also have reduced fitness and are ecologically different, and that hybridization is likely to continue to spread if hybrid populations with high amounts of rainbow trout admixture are not reduced or eliminated. I conclude that extant aboriginal cutthroat trout are at greater conservation risk due to hybridization than previously thought and policies that protect hybridized populations need reconsideration.
