Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the potential use of alternative silvicultural (harvesting) systems on the productivity of boreal mixedwood forests. Begins with an overview of the ecology of boreal mixedwoods, including physical environment, stand dynamics, and landscape ecology; then provides detailed reviews of modified clear-cutting systems (including strip cutting, patch cutting, and seed-tree cutting), shelterwood systems, and selection systems (including group selection and individual tree selection). Also briefly discusses the environmental considerations that are associated with these systems (effects on soil, water resources, wildlife, and aesthetics). Concludes with a discussion of areas of uncertainty in the application of alternative systems and the perceived problems that have limited their use in boreal mixedwoods.

Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.
Book Synopsis The Long-term Impacts of Clear-cut Logging on Insect Communities in the Boreal Mixedwood Forests of Northeastern Ontario by : Alissa Sugar
Download or read book The Long-term Impacts of Clear-cut Logging on Insect Communities in the Boreal Mixedwood Forests of Northeastern Ontario written by Alissa Sugar and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale clear-cut logging in the boreal forest may contribute to the loss of insect biodiversity through reductions in the amount of older, undisturbed forest and through stand-level decreases in structural heterogeneity. To investigate the long-term effects of clear-cutting on insect communities, hymenopteran and dipteran communities were surveyed with Malaise traps during the summer of 1998 in 12 mature (30-50 year old) post-logged and 12 unlogged boreal mixedwood stands in northeastern Ontario. Unlogged stands yielded a significantly higher abundance of Dolichopodidae (long-legged Ries), several Syrphidae (hoverflies) species, and the Syrphidae larval wood-inhabiting guild. These differences were predominantly due to the older ages of the unlogged stands which supported different habitat features, though some evidence of a logging effect per se was found. These results demonstrate the need for maintaining features characteristic of older forests in post-logged stands, and suggest a potential loss of insect species characteristic of older forests, particularly species dependent on downed woody debris, in the face of continued clear-cut logging activities.

Download or read book Response of Soil Invertebrates to Clear-cutting and Partial Cutting in a Boreal Mixedwood Forest in Northern Ontario written by Janet Anne Addison and published by [Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.] : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports on the short-term impacts of conventional (clear-cutting) and alternative (partial cutting) harvesting practices on the abundance and biodiversity of elements of forest soil fauna. Two groups of fauna were studied: ground-dwelling carabid beetles, and soil-dwelling springtails, mites, and Diptera larvae. The study area was in the Black Sturgeon Forest about 120 kilometres north-east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Results presented include the effects of various harvesting treatments on species diversity and on individual species; effects of drought observed by comparing 1994 and 1995 samples; and impacts of logging trails on soil springtails and mites. Management implications for boreal mixedwood forests are discussed.

Book Synopsis Response to Disturbance in Boreal Mixedwood Ecosystems by : John B. Scarratt
Download or read book Response to Disturbance in Boreal Mixedwood Ecosystems written by John B. Scarratt and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management and harvesting strategies in the northern Ontario boreal mixedwood zone have traditionally focused on clear-cutting or selective harvesting followed by attempted conversion to conifers. Changing public expectations about forest management and demands for protection of non-timber values in the boreal zone have led to a need for integrated management of the boreal forest. This in turn has created the need to develop ecologically and operationally sound alternatives for managing those forests. Such a need is being addressed through the Black Sturgeon research project reviewed in this paper. The project focuses on long-term, stand-level ecosystem response to disturbance and silvicultural manipulation, and evaluates feasibility and impacts of adopting alternative forest management approaches that avoid clear-cutting. The emphasis is on understanding ecological processes and interrelationships. The research reviewed includes a fire ecology component, a site preparation component, and a harvesting component.

Book Synopsis National Cross-cutting Issues Volume by : Nicola Mayer
Download or read book National Cross-cutting Issues Volume written by Nicola Mayer and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains eight papers on cross-cutting national issues related to global climate change. The first synthesizes current knowledge on two categories of costs associated with climate change: the costs of adapting to those changes that are not avoided by mitigation, and the costs of the residual impacts after adaptation. The second paper discusses the impact of climate change on natural hazards, adaptation, and their costs. This is followed by presentation of the case for integrated assessments of air issues: climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, acid deposition, smog, suspended particulates, and hazardous air pollutants. The fourth paper examines the effect of climate change outside Canada on Canadian interests, specifically in the areas of international trade, food and military security, and refugees. Paper five reviews the literature on domestic flows of goods and services in Canada as related to climate change. The sixth paper reviews patterns of changing climate and effects of climate change on landscapes, as driven by shifting ranges and ecozones, hydrological changes, permafrost melting, and rising sea levels. Paper seven explores the consequences of climate change and sustainable development remaining as separate discourses, noting the need for climate change and sustainable development to be represented in a more explicit manner in each other's research agendas. The final paper focuses on the land-based economy of Canada's northern indigenous peoples and how climate change may effect them.
Download or read book Silviculture written by Ralph D. Nyland and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silviculture: Concepts and Applications reflects a belief that all the tools of silviculture have a useful role in modern forestry. Through careful analysis and creative planning, foresters can address a wide array of commodity and nonmarket interests and opportunities while maintaining dynamic and resilient forests. A landowner’s needs, circumstances, and site conditions guide a silviculturist’s judgment and decision making in finding the best ways to integrate the biologic-ecologic, economic-financial, and managerial-administrative requirements at hand. The Third Edition of this influential text provides a foundational basis for rigorous discussion of techniques. The inclusion of numerous real-world examples and balanced coverage of past and current practices broadens the concept of silviculture and the ways that managers can use it to address both traditional and emerging interests in forests. A thorough discussion of new and proven interpretations increasingly directs the attention of foresters toward the role silviculture plays in creating, maintaining, rehabilitating, and restoring forests that can sustain an expanding variety of ecosystem services.
