Book excerpt: A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation was conducted to study effects of wing-canopy shape on the aerodynamic characteristics and spreader-bar load of a 550 swept parawing having large-diameter leading edges and keel. The canopy-flat-pattern sweep angles investigated on the 550 swept wing were 42.50, 450, 47.50, 500, and 52.50. Several other modifications to the canopy shape were also studied, such as removal of single, double, and compound gores from the rear part of each canopy lobe. A study of the effects of wing-leading-edge sweep angle was made between sweep angles of 500 and 600 and effects of leading-edge diameter were obtained at the basic 550 sweep angle. Effects of keel web height were determined for a constant trailing-edge length and also for trailing-edge lengths that varied with web height.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deployment characteristics of a 1/8-size dynamically and elastically scaled model of an inflatable parawing suitable for the recovery of an Apollo-type spacecraft were investigated in free flight and in the Langley transonic dynamics tunnel using a model which was mounted to permit limited angular freedom. The deployments were of a passive type; that is, there was no powered reel-in or reel-out of the suspension lines. However, a braking system was used to attenuate the dynamic loads in the suspension lines. The deployment technique was developed in an initial series of wind-tunnel tests. By utilizing the equipment and technique evolved from the wind-tunnel studies, successful free-flight deployments were accomplished and the transient loads associated with the deployments were measured. These results were compared with the results of subsequent wind-tunnel tests.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to study the effects of aspect ratio and canopy shape on the static longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic characteristics of parawings having 50.0° sweptback leading edges. Parawings with conical canopies and aspect ratios of 3.00, 4.00, 5.00, and 5.45 and parawings with cylindrical (zero twist and camber) canopies and aspect ratios of 3.00, 4.00, and 5.45 were used in the investigation. Effects of canopy fullness were investigated for aspect-ratio-5.45 parawings with both conical and cylindrical canopies.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study seeks to develop accurate methods for predicting the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of two-lobed conical parawings with leading-edge booms for high aspect ratios and high slackness. For prediction purposes, the assumption was made that the booms and canopy can be considered separately. The canopy was then considered to have a known shape for purposes of determining its aerodynamic performance. Various theoretical methods were studied for determining canopy aerodynamic characteristics, including profile drag, Force increments due to the leading-edge booms were studied both analytically and empirically.

Book excerpt: A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation was made to determine the performance and control characteristics of a 0.17-scale model of a manned flight vehicle with several different parawings of 50° sweep. The effects of aspect ratio, flat-pattern sweep, leading-edge taper, trailing-edge curvature, parawing material, chord extensions, and wing position relative to the fuselage were studied.
