Book excerpt: A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation was conducted to study effects of wing-canopy shape on the aerodynamic characteristics and spreader-bar load of a 550 swept parawing having large-diameter leading edges and keel. The canopy-flat-pattern sweep angles investigated on the 550 swept wing were 42.50, 450, 47.50, 500, and 52.50. Several other modifications to the canopy shape were also studied, such as removal of single, double, and compound gores from the rear part of each canopy lobe. A study of the effects of wing-leading-edge sweep angle was made between sweep angles of 500 and 600 and effects of leading-edge diameter were obtained at the basic 550 sweep angle. Effects of keel web height were determined for a constant trailing-edge length and also for trailing-edge lengths that varied with web height.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-speed wind-tunnel studies were made of the effects of camber and twist and the effects of aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings. To determine the effects of camber and twist, tests were made both with the conventional conical-type canopy, which provides camber and washout, and with a cylindrical-type canopy which provides essentially zero camber and twist. With regard to aspect ratio, tests were made of parawings having aspect ratios of 3 and 6; the range was thereby extended well beyond that of previous investigations. The degree to which airfoil and wing theory can be used to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings was also investigated.

Perhaps less familiar, but equally important and exciting, was the war on the western frontier, where Ohio Valley settlers fought for the land they had claimed -- and for their very lives. George Rogers Clark stepped forward to organize the local militias into a united front that would defend the western frontier from Indian attacks. Clark was one of the few people who saw the importance of the West in the war effort as a whole, and he persuaded Virginia's government to lend support to his efforts. As a result Clark was able to cross the Ohio, saving that part of the frontier from further raids. Lowell Harrison captures the excitement of this vital part of American history while giving a complete view of George Rogers Clark's significant achievements. Lowell H. Harrison, is a professor emeritus of history at Western Kentucky University and is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Lincoln of Kentucky, A New History of Kentucky, and Kentucky's Governors."

Book excerpt: An investigation has been made in the Langley 300-MPH 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a related series of parawings in which wing sweep was the primary variable. The leading-edge sweep angles varied from 400 to 750 and the three basic parawings had flat-planform sweep angles of 350, 450, and 550. The canopies of the wings were made of fabric. Tests were made at an airspeed of 38.6 mph and a Reynolds number of approximately 1.5 X 106. The maximum angle-of-attack range was from 140 to 530 for the wings having a canopy of 350 flat-planform sweep. A limited investigation of lateral characteristics was made for sideslip angles from approximately -50 to 160 for two angles of attack, and lateral stability derivatives were obtained for some configurations through a angle-of-attack range. Forces and moments acting on the wing and apex hinge moments were measured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts the reader in the pilot's seat for a "day at the office" unlike any other. The Smell of Kerosene tells the dramatic story of a NASA research pilot who logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 types of aircraft. Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first-hand description of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA. After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center, Mallick became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon.

Book excerpt: Lift, pitching-moment, and pressure distribution were measured on a wing which was swept -40, -30, 0, 35, and 45 degrees. The wing span was decreased to give aspect ratios 6.8, 5.3, 4.2, 3.4, and 2.8. The effects of independent variations of sweep and aspect ratio on the lift, pitching-moment, and span-load characteristics of the wings are compared with the effects estimated by use of the Weissinger method.

Book excerpt: Results and discussion are presented of a low-speed lateral-control investigation of three untapered unswept wings of aspect ratio 1.13, 2.13, and 4.13 and an untapered 45 degrees sweptback wing of aspect ratio 2.09 equipped with 0.60-semispan retractable ailerons having various projections. Continuous-span ailerons were tested at outboard stations on the unswept wings, and plain (continuous span) and stepped (segmented) ailerons were tested at various spanwise stations with and without simulated actuating arms on the sweptback wing.

Book excerpt: Four wing-body combinations of the same plan form (47 degree sweep, 3.5 aspect ratio, and 0.2 taper ratio) were compared at transonic speeds in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel. Three wings were 4, 6, and 9 percent thick; the fourth was 6 percent thick but, on the inner 0.4 span, tapered to 12-percent thickness at the roots.

This dictionary is an essential tool for professionals involved in the aerospace industry and flight, and for anyone who must read and understand the technical literature of the aerospace industry and about specific air and space craft. It is also an ideal reference for engineering and physics students encountering a subject replete with technical jargon and acronyms. Bill Gunston, one of the most widely read and respected aviation writers, has added more than 5,000 new terms and acronyms to this carefully updated volume. Terms used in the dictionary reflect the diverse and international nature of the aerospace industry and include brief explanations of aerospace materials and organizations. Gunston has scrupulously avoided terms specific to manufacturers, airlines, and armed forces in an effort to encourage clear communication and understanding among professionals.
