Secondary data was used in this research to analyze the symptoms of ADHD and the benefits of physical activity as a behavior modification intervention for this disorder with children. The study addressed the research question, what are the most effective types of physical activity for children with ADHD to reduce their symptoms of ADHD? The goal of the study was to analyze the advantages and limitations of implementing more physical activity programs within schools across the United States to treat symptoms of ADHD. The findings of the study indicated that physical activity improved ADHD symp-toms in children. Yoga and meditation reduced symptoms such as hyperactivity, social disorders, oppositional defiant disorder and reductions in peer behaviors for children with ADHD. The major findings of the study discovered that a combination of stimulant med-ication, therapy and physical activity had the greatest improvements with ADHD symp-toms in children. It is important for health educators to have an understanding of the characteristic symptoms of ADHD, and types of physical activities are most effective in reducing ADHD symptoms within elementary school children, to create effective health behavior change interventions.

According to the ADHD Institute (2016), ADHD has a relatively high prevalence rate among children and adolescents of approximately 5.29% and 7.1% respectively. In view of this and the lack of studies specific to this research topic, the goal of this intervention program is to address specific benefits of MBAT in emotional regulation that foster focusing skills, reflective functions on emotions, and organizational skills. A theoretical perspective of "top-down" and "bottom-up" self-regulatory processing as well as the self-expressive and self-reflective functions of art therapy is integrated in this study. Components of the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) are also integrated in the MBAT interventions developed for this population. The purpose of this study is to propose a 10-week group art therapy program geared towards improving emotional regulation in ways that can be practised in an interpersonal setting, giving participants an opportunity to work in a supportive group environment.

Book excerpt: An abundance of evidence promotes the superiority of stimulant medication in reducing disruptive behavior and improving the academic performance of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This same research, however, also indicated that 20% to 30% of these children do not respond positively to stimulant drug therapy. Further, while lower doses of stimulant medication have resulted in negative side effects, higher medication doses have been shown to result in minimal or even detrimental influences on children's cognition and learning. In addition to the problem of increased health risks for children who take stimulant medication, the majority of research that analyzes the effectiveness of stimulant medication is conducted at the group level. This is problematic because outcomes obtained at a group level of analysis are significantly limited by the enormous complexities of individual differences among children's responses to treatment and variability in environmental settings. Given the risks of stimulant medication to a significant proportion of children with ADFID, alternative treatment approaches may be beneficial and have merit of study. A growing number of research studies have suggested that vigorous exercise is beneficial for children with ADHD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a rigorous exercise program across multiple cognitive and behavioral domains for children with ADHD using multiple single-case studies. Children were studied individually using an AI3BA experimental design and results will be accumulated into a final summary statement of treatment effects. It was hypothesized that children's classroom behaviors and academic performance at baseline would significantly improve during rigorous exercise treatment, followed by a decline in behavior and academic performance during the reversal phase. Results indicated that children's inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive behavior decreased following their participation in a rigorous exercise program. Academic performance did not reliably improve over time on a stable basis.
