The cleaner more integrated Non-Distributed Flight Reference allowed subjects to visually acquire targets quicker with no decrease in flight performance. Using the Non-Distributed Flight Reference display for attitude information combined with a 3-D Audio/Visual cueing system for target acquisition is a promising method of reducing search time during a visual search task.

Book excerpt: Past research has shown that spatial orientation and situational awareness benefits are related to the use of HMD symbology and increased performance with localized audio. The research on HMDs includes looking at the benefits of off-boresight symbology for target search and attaches tasks, developing a methodology for evaluating off-axis HMD ownship information, and the development and evaluation of the NDFR symbology for on/off-boresight viewing. The localized auditory research includes looking at the benefits of augmenting the Terrain Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) with 3-D audio cues, using audio cues both spoken and non-spoken to help guide a visual search, and the effects of high acceleration on audio localization. The conclusions from this research are described below.

Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of localized auditory information on visual target detection performance. Visual targets were presented on either a wide field-of-view dome display or a helmet-mounted display and were accompanied by either localized, nonlocalized, or no auditory information. The addition of localized auditory information resulted in significant increases in target detection performance and significant reductions in workload ratings as compared with conditions in which auditory information was either nonlocalized or absent. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of participants' head motions revealed that the addition of localized auditory information resulted in extremely efficient and consistent search strategies. Implications for the development and design of multisensory virtual environments are discussed. Actual or potential applications of this research include the use of spatial auditory displays to augment visual information presented in helmet-mounted displays, thereby leading to increases in performance efficiency, reductions in physical and mental workload, and enhanced spatial awareness of objects in the environment.

Book excerpt: The effect of indirect vision systems on target detection and recognition is of interest to designers of future combat vehicles. In a field study, eight participants detected and identified pop-up' targets on an outdoor experimental facility from a stationary and a moving vehicle while using a head- mounted display (HMD) and direct viewing as a control, with and without sound localization. A head-slaved camera mounted on top of the vehicle provided the image to the HMD. With sound localization provided by localized auditory cueing, the computer-controlled audio tones (intermittent at a 0.5-second interval) appeared to originate from the location of the target. The results are that more targets were detected with direct viewing than with the HMD and from the stationary position than the moving vehicle. Although more targets were detected with direct viewing from the stationary vehicle without cueing, sound localization improved target detection in all other treatments. Similar comments apply to identification from the stationary position; however, fewer targets were identified from the moving vehicle with sound localization than without. The advantages of auditory cueing for target detection may have been limited by the choice of an intermittent tone for sound localization and the restricted search sector used in the experiment. Ratings of task attention loading show that increased attention was needed for the detection task with sound localization, especially with the HMD. This is also true for the identification task. Workload test battery ratings show a significant increase in perceived workload with the HMD as compared to the direct vision. A test of situational awareness shows significant effects with decreasing trends in perceived stability and familiarity and an increased need to concentrate when one is using the HMD in the moving vehicle.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of visual, spatial language and three-dimensional (3-D) audio cues about target location on target acquisition performance and the recall of information contained in concurrent radio communications. Two baseline conditions were also included in the analysis: no cues (Baseline 1) and target presence cues only (Baseline 2). In modes in which target location cues were provided, 100% of the targets presented were acquired, as compared to 94% in Baseline 1 and 95% in Baseline 2. On average, targets were acquired 1.4 seconds faster in the visual, spatial language, audio modes than in the baseline conditions, with times in the visual and 3-D audio modes being 1 second faster than those in spatial language. Overall workload scores were lower in the 3-D audio mode than in all other conditions except the visual mode. Less information (23%) was recalled from auditory communications in Baseline 1 than in the other four conditions where attention could be directed to communications between target presentations.

Book excerpt: This laboratory experiment examined the effects of paired sensory cues that indicate the location of targets on target acquisition performance, the recall of information presented in concurrent visual and auditory communications, and perceived workload. The multimodal cueing techniques assessed in this study were Visual+Spatial Language, Visual+3-D Audio, Visual+Tactile, and Spatial Language+Tactile. A unimodal visual only cue was included as a baseline. Except for reaction times to cues, no significant differences were found between the multimodal cue conditions and the Visual Only mode in primary and secondary task performance or subjective workload. Reaction times were faster in the Visual+3-D Audio and the Visual+Tactile conditions than in modes that included a spatial language cue. Reaction times to the visual+spatial language cue were faster than the spatial language+tactile cue, but no significant differences were found between the Visual+Spatial Language and the Visual Only modes. Adding the 3-D audio cue to the visual cue significantly improved reaction time beyond that of the Visual Only condition, but no significant difference was found between the Visual Only and the Visual+Tactile modes. Reaction times to cues were slower when communications were presented visually, but no interaction was found between communications modality and cue condition on this measure. Communications modality, however, did have a different effect on subjective ratings of effort in the Visual+Tactile mode than in the other cue conditions. In the Visual+Tactile mode, ratings of effort were significantly lower when communications were presented auditorily than when they were presented visually, but communications modality did not appear to affect ratings of effort in the other cue conditions.

Book excerpt: We conducted a study to examine the effects of target cueing and conformality with a hand-held or head-mounted display to determine their effects on visual search tasks requiring focused and divided attention. Eleven military subjects were asked to detect, identify, and give azimuth information for targets hidden in terrain presented in a simulated far domain environment while performing a monitoring task in the near domain using either a helmet mounted display or hand-held display. The results showed that the presence of cueing aided the target detection task for expected targets but drew attention away from the presence of unexpected targets in the environment representing a form of cognitive tunneling. This effect was mediated by the display platform used, such that cognitive tunneling was reduced when subjects were using the hand-held display. Additionally, the results showed that the presence of cueing hindered performance on the secondary task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldier-robot teams will be an important component of future battle spaces, creating a complex but potentially more survivable and effective combat force. The complexity of the battlefield of the future presents its own problems. The variety of robotic systems and the almost infinite number of possible military missions create a dilemma for researchers who wish to predict human-robot interactions (HRI) performance in future environments. Human-Robot Interactions in Future Military Operations provides an opportunity for scientists investigating military issues related to HRI to present their results cohesively within a single volume. The issues range from operators interacting with small ground robots and aerial vehicles to supervising large, near-autonomous vehicles capable of intelligent battlefield behaviors. The ability of the human to 'team' with intelligent unmanned systems in such environments is the focus of the volume. As such, chapters are written by recognized leaders within their disciplines and they discuss their research in the context of a broad-based approach. Therefore the book allows researchers from differing disciplines to be brought up to date on both theoretical and methodological issues surrounding human-robot interaction in military environments. The overall objective of this volume is to illuminate the challenges and potential solutions for military HRI through discussion of the many approaches that have been utilized in order to converge on a better understanding of this relatively complex concept. It should be noted that many of these issues will generalize to civilian applications as robotic technology matures. An important outcome is the focus on developing general human-robot teaming principles and guidelines to help both the human factors design and training community develop a better understanding of this nascent but revolutionary technology. Much of the research within the book is based on the Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED), U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) 5-year Army Technology Objective (ATO) research program. The program addressed HRI and teaming for both aerial and ground robotic assets in conjunction with the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Research and Development Center (TARDEC) and the Aviation and Missile Development Center (AMRDEC) The purpose of the program was to understand HRI issues in order to develop and evaluate technologies to improve HRI battlefield performance for Future Combat Systems (FCS). The work within this volume goes beyond the research results to encapsulate the ATO's findings and discuss them in a broader context in order to understand both their military and civilian implications. For this reason, scientists conducting related research have contributed additional chapters to widen the scope of the original research boundaries.
