The cleaner more integrated Non-Distributed Flight Reference allowed subjects to visually acquire targets quicker with no decrease in flight performance. Using the Non-Distributed Flight Reference display for attitude information combined with a 3-D Audio/Visual cueing system for target acquisition is a promising method of reducing search time during a visual search task.

Book excerpt: Past research has shown that spatial orientation and situational awareness benefits are related to the use of HMD symbology and increased performance with localized audio. The research on HMDs includes looking at the benefits of off-boresight symbology for target search and attaches tasks, developing a methodology for evaluating off-axis HMD ownship information, and the development and evaluation of the NDFR symbology for on/off-boresight viewing. The localized auditory research includes looking at the benefits of augmenting the Terrain Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) with 3-D audio cues, using audio cues both spoken and non-spoken to help guide a visual search, and the effects of high acceleration on audio localization. The conclusions from this research are described below.

Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of localized auditory information on visual target detection performance. Visual targets were presented on either a wide field-of-view dome display or a helmet-mounted display and were accompanied by either localized, nonlocalized, or no auditory information. The addition of localized auditory information resulted in significant increases in target detection performance and significant reductions in workload ratings as compared with conditions in which auditory information was either nonlocalized or absent. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of participants' head motions revealed that the addition of localized auditory information resulted in extremely efficient and consistent search strategies. Implications for the development and design of multisensory virtual environments are discussed. Actual or potential applications of this research include the use of spatial auditory displays to augment visual information presented in helmet-mounted displays, thereby leading to increases in performance efficiency, reductions in physical and mental workload, and enhanced spatial awareness of objects in the environment.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of tactile, visual, and auditory (spatial language and three-dimensional [3-D] audio) cues about threat location on target acquisition and the recall of information presented in visual and auditory communications. On average, participants hit 98% of the targets presented when cued about the location of targets compared to 64% in a baseline condition (no cues). When target location cues were provided, time to first shot was an average 26% faster; 23% more information was recalled from the auditory and visual communications, and overall workload scores were 17% lower. On average, time to first shot in the visual and spatial language modes was 13% faster than in the tactile condition and 26% faster than in the 3-D audio mode. Overall workload scores were an average 14% higher in the 3-D audio mode than in the other conditions in which target location cues were provided. Communications modality did not have a significant effect on either the amount of information recalled from the communications or on target acquisition. No interactions were found between communications modality and cue condition. However, on average, 10% more information was recalled from communications when target location cues were provided in the visual mode than in the other cue conditions.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of visual, spatial language and three-dimensional (3-D) audio cues about target location on target acquisition performance and the recall of information contained in concurrent radio communications. Two baseline conditions were also included in the analysis: no cues (Baseline 1) and target presence cues only (Baseline 2). In modes in which target location cues were provided, 100% of the targets presented were acquired, as compared to 94% in Baseline 1 and 95% in Baseline 2. On average, targets were acquired 1.4 seconds faster in the visual, spatial language, audio modes than in the baseline conditions, with times in the visual and 3-D audio modes being 1 second faster than those in spatial language. Overall workload scores were lower in the 3-D audio mode than in all other conditions except the visual mode. Less information (23%) was recalled from auditory communications in Baseline 1 than in the other four conditions where attention could be directed to communications between target presentations.

Book excerpt: Spatial disorientation (SD) accidents are a major contributor to the Class A mishap rate in the US Air Force. A recent investigation showed that transitions between visual meteorological conditions (VMC), when pilots use real-world visual cues to fly, to instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), when pilots have to use instruments to fly, were a leading cause of SD. In VMC, the true horizon is the primary visual cue pilots use to orient themselves. In IMC, pilots must rely on a representation of the horizon as their primary visual cue to maintain spatial orientation. Research has shown that when pilots fly in VMC, they tilt their heads in the direction opposite that of aircraft roll in an effort to keep the horizon fixed in their visual field. This implies that pilots use a world frame of reference for determining orientation. However, pilots do not tilt their heads in IMC when viewing the horizon symbol on a head-down, aircraft-referenced attitude indicator. Because pilots must transition between these two frames of reference when transitioning between VMC and IMC, this may be causing SD. The helmet-mounted display (HMD) is currently being tested as a means of displaying attitude information. The HMD symbology tested portrays a conformal horizon symbol which overlays the true horizon. In VMC, pilots see the true horizon and the conformal horizon symbol simultaneously. In IMC, pilots see only the horizon symbol. It was hypothesized that pilots would tilt their heads in VMC and in IMC (due to the fact that the conformal horizon represents the true horizon). Eleven pilot-subjects completed a VMC and an IMC flight task. Results showed no practical head tilt in either task. This was attributed to the nature of the task. Task demands determine the visual information to which pilots attend. This attention narrowing may influence the strength of the OKCR.

Book excerpt: The response times to and correct identification of target stimuli superimposed on panoramic scenes were measured under conditions of restriction and nonrestriction of peripheral vision. Twenty-five male subjects were assigned randomly to experimental conditions and required to search for target stimuli under simulated visual flight conditions of varying color and terrain features. A simulated helmet-mounted device was used to restrict peripheral vision. The data are viewed as supporting the position that the intrusion of a helmet-mounted device into a pilot's field of view can result in a significant decrement to his target vigilance performance. Possible implications in human engineering design and subsequent research efforts are discussed. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The research presented in this thesis was designed to investigate whether and how the temporal synchrony and spatial congruence of non-visual cues with visual targets could work together to improve the discrimination and identification of visual targets in neurologically-healthy adult humans. The speed and accuracy of participants' responses were compared following the presence or absence of temporally synchronous and/or spatially congruent or incongruent auditory, vibrotactile, and audiotactile cues in the context of dynamic visual search and rapidly-masked visual target identification. The understanding of the effects of auditory, vibrotactile, and audiotactile cues derived from these laboratory-based tasks was then applied to an air traffic control simulation involving the detection and resolution of potential conflicts (represented as visual targets amidst dynamic and cluttered visual stimuli). The results of the experiments reported in this thesis demonstrate that, in the laboratory-based setting, temporally synchronous and spatially informative non-visual cues both gave rise to significant improvements in participants' performance, and the combination of temporal and spatial cuing gave rise to additional improvements in visual target identification performance. In the real-world setting, however, only the temporally synchronous unimodal auditory and bimodal audiotactile cues gave rise to a consistent facilitation of participants' visual target detection performance. The mechanisms and accounts proposed to explain the effects of spatial and temporal cuing, namely multisensory integration and attention, are examined and discussed with respect to the observed improvements in participants' visual target identification performance.

A partial binocular overlap HMD is slated for use with the Army's new RAH-66 Comanche helicopter. The size of the binocular HMD's field-of-view (FOV) is the size of the visual world available to the Army helicopter pilot via an imaging sensor. The Comanche HMD presents the FOV in a partial binocular overlap configuration rather than a full binocular overlap configuration. In this latter configuration, the images presented to both eyes, the monocular fields, present identical views of the visual world where the FOV consists of a single binocular region. In the partial binocular overlap configuration, the FOV consists of a central binocular overlap region seen by both eyes, and two flanking monocular regions, each seen by one eye. What is the operational effectiveness of this new visual interface? First, we briefly describe the relevant differences between normal unaided vision and vision with a binocular HMD. Then, we cover our recent empirical findings on the sensory and perceptual effects of this type of display and how visual performance might be affected. Any deficits in performance need to be quantified before they are manifested on the battlefield. This study investigates how target acquisition is affected by implementing various configurations of the HMD's binocular display.
