Data from sweating manikins also have been used within thermoregulation computer models to estimate the physiological responses of humans. In recent years, the development of the ManikinPC system has incorporated a thermoregulation model into a thermal sweating manikin system to provide a real-time analysis of predicted physiological response. This paper describes an experimental study that demonstrates the utility of this manikin-model system to predict the effects of three composite materials used in firefighter suits on human physiological response. This study addresses this question: Can ManikinPC emulate the physiological response of a controlled wear trial using three different sets of firefighter turnout gear in one environmental condition? The average core temperature, skin temperature, and sweat loss from human subjects are compared with the predicted values generated from the manikin coupled with the model. Results indicate similar trends and ranking of the three suits. The data revealed slightly higher predictive responses from the manikin-model system compared with the collected human data.

Measurement techniques and results are compared. These two measures of heat loss are also compared on their ability to explain thermal heat stress. The assessments of thermal heat stress were provided in a report from an earlier physiological study where human responses were evaluated during wear trials of firefighter protective gear. The focus of this research was on the role of the instrumented sweating manikin as a supplemental tool in predicting heat stress. Its human form makes it a logical intermediary tool between a flat skin model (hot plate) and human subject testing. Thus, it was decided to investigate its role by using it to evaluate six firefighter turnout ensembles where there was existing data available for comparison to both hot plate and physiological test results. The results of this study indicate that sweating thermal manikin measurements provide a fuller explanation and prediction of heat stress assessments in physiological wear trials than provided by a sweating hot plate. This is attributed to the ability of manikin tests to evaluate the effects of garments' insulating air layers and the contribution of clothing design features to the total thermal burden. This research provides insights into the use of instrumented manikins as research tools and as means of providing information useful for predicting and explaining the results of physiological wear trials of firefighter protective clothing. Thermal manikins are also shown to be valuable tools for evaluating the distribution of heat loss through different areas of protective gear.

The true evaporative resistance (Ret) covered in ASTM F1868, Test Method for Thermal and Evaporative Resistance of Clothing Materials Using a Sweating Hot Plate , Part B is the other index used to predict the garment's breathability, which is not included in NFPA 1971. To explore the better index among these two values for predicting the human physiological response under warm conditions. This paper reported a human subject study to measure the physiological responses of firefighters conducting a designed protocol while wearing three different types of turnout garments in a warm condition. These three garments had similar THL indexes but different Ret. The results showed that firefighters dropped out only when they wore garments with the highest Ret value. A significant difference in the maximum change in heart rate was found between firefighters wearing garments with different Ret values. An apparent difference in core temperature when all firefighters were present was observed when wearing the garment with the highest Ret value. No obvious difference was found between subjects wearing different garments. The work demonstrated the need to evaluate the Ret in addition to the THL for heat strain evaluations of protective clothing.

Eight experienced fire fighters (23 - 47 years old) were randomly exposed to three wear trials consisting of a standardized treadmill test of 25 min of hard work at Ta of 50 °C, and P of 1440 W/m2, interrupted by a 25-min break at Ta of 22 °C, and followed by 30 min of moderate work at Ta of 40 °C, and P of 258 - 177 W/m2. Body temperatures and heart rate increased steadily during the work periods up to the individual heat tolerance limits. The body temperatures were higher when the suit with a membrane was worn. The difference in rectal temperature was not significant, but the difference in mean skin temperature was statistically significant at the end of the hard work (p=0.05). More sweat condensated in the underclothing, and the subjective evaluation of physical exertion, thermal discomfort and sensation were higher for the suit with the membrane, but only slight statistically significant differences were found. The corrected thermal insulation (ITcorr) and the water vapor permeability (Me) measured with the aid of a sweating thermal manikin were higher for the suit without the membrane.

The test protocol allows to determine quickly the efficiency of sweat permeation through protective equipment. The sweat evaporation is strongly limited by the butyl suit, but in comparaison with naked manikin, NBC permeable protective clothing allow significant flow rate. This evaluation is a complementary and obligatory preliminary step before physiological test on human in laboratory and on the field.

The characteristics of fire hazards are discussed in detail, and the thermal environments faced by firefighters in these fire hazards are also examined. The different types of potential burn injuries and the heat stress that occurs to firefighters’ bodies when exposed to such thermal environments are analyzed. Furthermore, the development of various high performance fibers and fabrics for thermal protective clothing is discussed. The test methods and existing standards to evaluate the thermal protective and physiological comfort performances of the fabrics and clothing are critically reviewed. Recent developments in the field of fire- and heat-resistant materials have led to significant improvements in thermal protective clothing. In parallel with this, the complexity and risk levels of fires, especially in industrial-storage facilities, and developments in health and safety cultures have increased the demand for high-performance heat- and flame-resistant clothing and equipment, designed to mitigate skin burn injuries and reduce risk of death from fire hazards. Throughout the work, the gaps and limitations in existing test methods and standards are identified, and approaches are recommended for the development of enhanced test methods. Scenario modeling and its implications for firefighters’ protective clothing is discussed, and various factors affecting performance are established. Finally, various key issues related to thermal protective clothing are addressed to guide the future research in the field of thermal protective clothing for firefighters. Book excerpt: This research studied the relationship between heat transfer measured using a guarded sweating hot plate test method and the actual comfort and heat stress performance of firefighter turnout clothing. Controlled environment wear trials were conducted using the climate chamber available at the Center for Research on Textile Protection and Comfort (T-PACC) in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Seven professional firefighters participated in these studies. Two different wear test protocols were performed to simulate two levels of work activity, climate conditions, and clothing and equipment variables: One protocol featured light to moderate work activity in a mild climate (21°C, 65% RH). Subjective and objective measures of human psychological and physiological response were applied to quantify and rate performance in several categories. A separate study was conducted to determine the heat stress experienced by firefighters performing moderate work activities in a warm environment (39°C, 35% RH).
