Book excerpt: The IDEAL conference boast a vibrant and successful history dating back to 1998, th and this edition marked the 10 anniversary, an important milestone demonstrating the increasing popularity and high quality of the IDEAL conferences. Burgos, the capital of medieval Spain and a lively city today, was a perfect venue to celebrate such an occasion. The conference has become a unique, established and broad int- disciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners in many fields to interact with each other and with leading academics and industries in the areas of machine lea- ing, information processing, data mining, knowledge management, bio-informatics, neuro-informatics, bio-inspired models, agents and distributed systems, and hybrid systems. IDEAL 2009 received over 200 submissions. After a rigorous peer-review process, the International Programme Committee accepted 100 high-quality papers to be - cluded in the conference proceedings. In this 10th edition, a special emphasis was given on the organization of workshops and special sessions. Two workshops were organized under the framework of IDEAL 2009: MIR Day 2009 and Nature-Inspired Models for Industrial Applications. Five special sessions were organized by leading researchers in their fields on various topics such as Soft Computing Techniques in Data Mining, - cent Advances on Swarm-Based Computing, Intelligent Computational Techniques in Medical Image Processing, Advances on Ensemble Learning and Information Fusion, and Financial and Business Engineering (Modelling and Applications).

Book excerpt: During the past ten years, there has been intensive development in theoretical and experimental research of solitons in periodic media. This book provides a unique and informative account of the state-of-the-art in the field. The volume opens with a review of the existence of robust solitary pulses in systems built as a periodic concatenation of very different elements. Among the most famous examples of this type of systems are the dispersion management in fiber-optic telecommunication links, and (more recently) photonic crystals. A number of other systems belonging to the same broad class of spatially periodic strongly inhomogeneous media (such as the split-step and tandem models) have recently been identified in nonlinear optics, and transmission of solitary pulses in them was investigated in detail. Similar soliton dynamics occurs in temporal-domain counterparts of such systems, where they are subject to strong time-periodic modulation (for instance, the Feshbach-resonance management in Bose-Einstein condensates). Basis results obtained for all these systems are reviewed in the book. This timely work will serve as a useful resource for the soliton community.

Book excerpt: Many businesses and organizations struggle with implementing effective teamwork, leading to confusion, stress, and subpar results. In higher education, students often graduate without the necessary teamwork skills, leaving them unprepared for the demands of the modern workplace. Empowering Teams in Higher Education: Strategies for Success addresses these challenges head-on, offering a practical guide for improving teamwork and creating a collaborative learning environment. By providing insights, strategies, and real-world examples, this book equips students and educators alike with the tools they need to succeed. Employers increasingly value teamwork and collaboration, and do not have the resources to train recent graduates who need these essential skills. This book fills the gap between higher education and the workforce by providing a roadmap for transforming students' educational experiences. With a focus on practical strategies and real-world applications, this book effectively prepares students to excel in team-based environments. Educators will also benefit from this book, gaining valuable insights into effective team dynamics and how to nurture innovation in their classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management and Analysis of Biological Populations demonstrates the usefulness of optimal control theory in the management of biological populations and the Liapunov function in simulating an ecosystem model under large perturbations of its initial state and continual disturbances on its dynamics. The first chapter of the book introduces the topic by presenting the different models in ecology and discussing the stability concepts, the ecological engineering, and various relevant functions in ecosystem modeling. The next chapter contains a brief survey of static optimization techniques and optimal control theory for systems, which are modeled by differential and difference equations. Another chapter covers methods that use Liapunov and Liapunov-like functions to establish that a given population model is stable relative to finite perturbations of its initial state and that it is non-vulnerable relative to large continual disturbances. The book also covers fisheries and logistic modeling, including a discussion of a few management problems. Moreover, this reference considers stability in an ecosystem model with complexities due to species richness, nonlinearities, time delays, and spatial heterogeneity. Finally, it explains how to manage pests and greenhouse crops. The book is an excellent reference source for students and professionals in ecology and environmental engineering. Research professionals and extended workers in agriculture and agronomy will also find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 6th International ICST Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness and of the Third International ICST Workshop on Advanced Architectures and Algorithms for Internet DElivery and Applications. Both events were held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November 2009. To each of these events is devoted a specific part of the volume. The first part is dedicated to the proceedings of ICST QShine 2009. The first four chapters deal with new issues concerning the quality of service in IP-based telephony and multimedia. A second set of four chapters addresses some important research problems in mul- hop wireless networks, with a special emphasis on the problems of routing. The following three papers deal with recent advances in the field of data mana- ment and area coverage in sensor networks, while a fourth set of chapters deals with mobility and context-aware services. The fifth set of chapters contains new works in the area of Internet delivery and switching systems. The following chapters of the QShine part of the volume are devoted to papers in the areas of resource management in wireless networks, overlay, P2P and SOA arc- tectures. Some works also deal with the optimization of quality of service and energy consumption in WLAN and sensor networks and on the design of a mobility support in mesh networks.

This book was released on 2012-05-14 with total page 1313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume book provides an overview of physical techniques used to characterize the structure of solid materials, on the one hand, and to investigate the reactivity of their surface, on the other. Therefore this book is a must-have for anyone working in fields related to surface reactivity. Among the latter, and because of its most important industrial impact, catalysis has been used as the directing thread of the book. After the preface and a general introduction to physical techniques by M. Che and J.C. Vedrine, two overviews on physical techniques are presented by G. Ertl and Sir J.M. Thomas for investigating model catalysts and porous catalysts, respectively. The book is organized into four parts: Molecular/Local Spectroscopies, Macroscopic Techniques, Characterization of the Fluid Phase (Gas and/ or Liquid), and Advanced Characterization. Each chapter focuses upon the following important themes: overview of the technique, most important parameters to interpret the experimental data, practical details, applications of the technique, particularly during chemical processes, with its advantages and disadvantages, conclusions.
