Book excerpt: In an effort to minimize the cost and maximize the effectiveness of highway noise barriers, the Federal Highway Administration and a National Pooled Fund Panel (made up of 14 States) funded a field study program on an experimental highway noise barrier. A test barrier was constructed in 1984 at a site at Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia. The study, conducted from May 1989 to August 1989 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Research and Special Programs Administration, Transportation Systems Center, focused on the use of absorptive treatment and tilting as a means of improving the insertion loss (specifically, single event moving point source insertion loss) of two parallel highway noise barriers. Measurements were conducted with both controlled moving point sources (trucks) and an artificial fixed-point source (speaker system).

The objective of the study was to measure the degradation in acoustic performance of a highway noise barrier due to the close proximity of a parallel barrier on the opposite side of the roadway. The test site selected for measurements consisted of a contiguous arrangement of two parallel reflective noise barriers followed by a single noise barrier. Five-minute, energy-averaged, A-weighted noise levels were computed from data measured simultaneously at identical heights and offset positions behind the single and parallel barrier arrangements. A comparison of the measured and predicted results is presented.

Handbook of Environmental Acousticssimplifies this decision-making process and provides easy-to-followexplanations of acoustic terminology, noise control design, andregulatory noise issues. The book clarifies key aspects ofenvironmental noise in basic language, covering: * Common noise sources--including the risk of exposure to commondaily environmental noise sources * Current noise regulations, guidelines, andstandards--illustrating all key points * Acoustic terminology and environmental noisedescriptors--providing a foundation for understanding noiseissues * Effects of noise on people and animals--emphasizing theimportance of restricting noise exposure * Relevant noise rating methods--clarifiying the use of noisemetrics * Construction and building code requirements--explaining currentrequirements and featuring tips on how to avoid privacyproblems * Measurement considerations--demonstrating standard methods andoffering practical advice on how to ensure proper measurementprocedures * Noise control designs--detailing source-path-receiver systems andnoise control fundamentals In addition to traditional noise control methods, new areas, suchas active noise control, sound intensity measurement, and diffusivedesigns, are explained. A sample municipal noise ordinance helpsthe user to draft an ordinance tailored to the needs of aparticular community. Avoiding complex mathematics and analyses,Handbook of Environmental Acoustics is a user-friendly manual forurban planners, municipal officials, engineers, attorneys, industrial hygienists, architects, environmental professionals, andstudents in these fields.

Book excerpt: The completion of the traffic noise barrier project HAM-71-11.44 in Ohio was met with strong reaction from those living in the project area. Many residents complained that noise levels had actually increased at their location as a result of the project, while others claimed that levels had decreased where they lived. The preliminary assessment project was initiated to determine the nature and extent of any problems that had occurred with the construction of the noise barriers. A two-pronged approach was used for the study. First, a survey of residents was conducted to characterize the residents' perception of changes in noise levels due to construction of the barriers. Second, a physical investigation of the project area was made, which included roadway and barrier geometries, traffic characteristics before and after barrier construction, and acoustical measurements to characterize the noise environment in the project area.

Book excerpt: The research described in this report determined the effects of parallel noise barriers as a contributing factor to the perception of increased noise levels by distant receivers. Data to quantify the characteristics of noise propagation was acquired at the HAM-71-11.44 and SUM-8-6.8 parallel barrier sites. Both sites had complaints of increased noise levels due to barrier construction. An in-situ test system using a point source was devised and developed to identify the existence, location, and relative intensity of reflections between parallel noise barriers. Multiple reflections from barrier walls existed at each receiver location for all parallel barrier sites tested. The reflections increased noise levels for receivers from below 1 dB for receivers closest to the noise barriers, to increases approaching the theoretical maximum of 3 dB for receivers farther from the noise barriers. Reflection contributions to receiver sound levels increased with greater receiver distance from the highway up to 120 m from the noise barrier. A mean barrier attenuation of 2-4 dB was predicted for modeled receivers 180m to 420m from the near barrier. The propagation path height change with the barrier construction increased received levels from a test signal point source by an average of 3 to 4 dB, but as much as 14 dB for receivers 180m to 360m from the barriers. The increase in received levels was attributed to a reduction in ground attenuation caused by the increased ray path height following barrier construction. The sound-absorbing panels used to retrofit the west side noise barrier on the Summit 8 project substantially reduced the contribution of reflections for east side receivers. The reduction in reflection contributions due to the sound-absorbing panels was greater for receivers at increased distances from the highway. The results of the investigation support the hypothesis that many of these distant receivers realized little barrier attenuation following noise barrier construction. Further, the amount of barrier attenuation realized was in many cases more than offset by the loss in ground attenuation due to the change in noise path height due to barrier construction. Finally, reflections between parallel noise barriers increased noise levels above the levels expected for single barriers.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this project was to identify innovative noise barrier designs that had the potential to be implemented in Arizona. The study initially focused on gathering existing literature on noise barrier materials and designs that were non-conventional. Literature was collected on dozens of noise barrier research projects in 12 countries around the world. Many of the barrier designs consisted of treatments to the top edge of the barrier to change or disrupt the diffraction pathway from the noise source to the receiver. The results of the previous research studies were compiled into a matrix to assist in evaluating the various barrier designs and materials. The evaluation matrix was used to score the barrier designs based on their acoustic performance, as well as economic, constructability, maintenance, and aesthetic considerations. Also, an attempt was made to identify the processes by which Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) selects and approves various barrier designs for implementation on a project. Based on the research and evaluation conducted for this study, it was recommended that two innovative barrier designs be implemented in Arizona – the T-top design with absorptive material placed on the top of the horizontal portion of the barrier and a vertical barrier with absorptive material applied to the face of the barrier. These two barrier designs have been shown in the available literature to reduce noise levels by up to 3 decibels, which could reduce overall barrier heights by as much as 5 feet compared with a conventional noise barrier of concrete or masonry block construction.

Book excerpt: As new and existing U.S. residential areas and high volume highways continue to intermingle, traffic noise abatement procedures continue to be important. This study investigated the acoustic effectiveness, public acceptance, and structural requirements of various designs and types of sound barriers. In addition, the acoustic effectiveness of a prototype sound barrier is reported. Results are presented on the acoustic effectiveness from in situ measurements of one cement bonded composite panel barrier and four precast concrete, two plywood, two glued-laminated, and three post and panel barriers. The research on public acceptance of sound barriers focused on the perception of visual compatibility. Based on results from semantic-differential and individual ratings, wood and concrete barrier designs were perceived to have favored gbsruralgcs qualities. Data collected during the research on acoustic effectiveness and public acceptance were used to develop structural requirements and construction details for a prototype wood sound barrier. The prototype wood sound barrier provided insertion losses of 15 dB or greater, exceeding the 10-dB acceptable performance for a highway sound barrier.
