Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discusses business simulation games as teaching tools in Information Systems (IS). The discipline's traditional teaching methods, while appropriate for the dissemination of foundational knowledge, do not provide the optimal platform for students to implement IS concepts. We suggest that business simulation games are an effective way to engage students in Decision Support Systems (DSS). Specifically, we discuss our experience with a game designed to channel students into a stream of entrepreneurial decision-making. Our findings indicate that business simulation games represent a sufficiently novel approach to teaching and learning.

Additionally, the chapter also introduces their general features, the standard process of deploying them in practice and the standard architecture of current IT-based BSGs. After that, the following two chapters will answer the questions correspondingly. Chapter 3 will focus on the current usage of IT-based BSGs. Each of the application fields and the concrete usage purposes in each field will be presented. In addition, actual and relevant examples will also be presented to demonstrate them. Chapter 4 will proceed with the second question, on the potentials of specific concepts and technologies for the future development of IT-based BSGs. The chapter will be divided into two parts, with the first concentrating on the concepts and the second on the technologies. The last chapter, the discussion, will summarize and discuss the findings in the previous chapters

Book excerpt: Use Video Games to Drive Innovation, Customer Engagement, Productivity, and Profit! Companies of all shapes and sizes have begun to use games to revolutionize the way they interact with customers and employees, becoming more competitive and more profitable as a result. Microsoft has used games to painlessly and cost-effectively quadruple voluntary employee participation in important tasks. Medical schools have used game-like simulators to train surgeons, reducing their error rate in practice by a factor of six. A recruiting game developed by the U.S. Army, for just 0.25% of the Army’s total advertising budget, has had more impact on new recruits than all other forms of Army advertising combined. And Google is using video games to turn its visitors into a giant, voluntary labor force--encouraging them to manually label the millions of images found on the Web that Google’s computers cannot identify on their own. Changing the Game reveals how leading-edge organizations are using video games to reach new customers more cost-effectively; to build brands; to recruit, develop, and retain great employees; to drive more effective experimentation and innovation; to supercharge productivity...in short, to make it fun to do business. This book is packed with case studies, best practices, and pitfalls to avoid. It is essential reading for any forward-thinking executive, marketer, strategist, and entrepreneur, as well as anyone interested in video games in general. In-game advertising, advergames, adverworlds, and beyond Choose your best marketing opportunities--and avoid the pitfalls Use gaming to recruit and develop better employees Learn practical lessons from America’s Army and other innovative case studies Channel the passion of your user communities Help your customers improve your products and services--and have fun doing it What gamers do better than computers, scientists, or governments Use games to solve problems that can’t be solved any other way

Book excerpt: The outbreak of the pandemic around the world came with national measures to deal with the health emergency that caused and will continue to cause important disruption in education for students, teachers, and policymakers. Digital technologies can provide innovative solutions that can prevent the negative effects of lockdowns of countries and regions on education. It is important to analyze digital solutions and experiences for distance learning and to better understand the available resources and best practices to deal effectively with the challenges of digital learning for both learners and academic staff. It is important that countries promote digital excellence and explore the opportunities that information technologies can provide to education institutions, especially in the post-pandemic scenario, and the major transformations it will bring to citizens, societies, and economies. The Handbook of Research on Analyzing IT Opportunities for Inclusive Digital Learning explores the new demands of labor markets in the digital economy, how educational institutions can respond to these new opportunities and threats, the development of new teaching and learning methods, and finally, the development of digital skills and competences. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities caused by the pandemic in the area of education and how information technologies can transform education and develop a new workforce with the required digital skills and competences and knowledge to fit the post-pandemic labor market. This book highlights topics including knowledge management systems, learning technologies, personalized learning, and more within the context of diverse student populations. It is a valuable reference tool for academics, researchers, lecturers, decision makers, policymakers, and practitioners interested in new theories, research findings, and case studies for understanding inclusive digital learning and the opportunities for digital technologies in education.

Book excerpt: Research in the field of education for sustainable development (ESD) is of growing concern to meet the needs of the diverse student populations in various higher education institutions. People around the world recognize that current economic development trends are not sustainable and that public awareness, education, and training are key to moving society toward sustainability. Although ESD continues to grow both in content and pedagogy and its visibility and respect have grown in parallel, education officials, policymakers, educators, curriculum developers, and others are called upon to rethink education in order to contribute to the achievement of the goals of sustainable development in higher education. The Handbook of Research on Implications of Sustainable Development in Higher Education provides insight regarding the implications of ESD for teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education and demonstrates the value of adopting an ESD lens by broadening and strengthening the evidence base of the impact that this can make for students, educators, and society as a whole. Covering key topics such as assessment, globalization, and inclusion, this reference work is ideal for university leaders, administrators, policymakers, researchers, scholars, practitioners, academicians, instructors, and students.
