Book excerpt: Although road safety interventions have, to date, not been very successful at bringing about reductions in speeding behaviour, research indicates that specifying implementation intentions will be effective for a substantial number of drivers. The present study tested the effects of a newly developed implementation intention intervention on drivers' speeding behaviour. A randomised controlled design was used. At baseline, a convenience sample (N = 118) completed self-report questionnaires measuring speeding behaviour and motivation to speed. Experimental participants then specified implementation intentions to reduce their speeding, using a volitional help sheet that required them to link critical situations in which they are tempted to speed with strategies to resist the temptation. An active control group was, instead, asked to change their behaviour and received an informational leaflet about the risks of speeding. All participants completed the self-report questionnaire again at follow-up, one month post intervention. In line with the hypotheses, it was found that: 1) the experimental group exceeded the speed limit less frequently than did the control group, and this change in behaviour was not attributable to any changes in motivation; 2) goal intention was a stronger predictor of subsequent speeding behaviour for the experimental participants than the control participants, and past behaviour was a weaker predictor; and 3) the experimental group not only reduced speeding in the critical situations specified in their implementation intentions, but also in situations they did not specify. These results held only for participants who at baseline reported speeding more than they intended to (just over 50% of the sample). The findings suggest that implementation intentions will be effective at reducing speeding for half the driving population and work by weakening the effect of habit, thereby allowing generally positive (safe) intentions to guide subsequent behaviour.

In most countries, injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children and young adults age 1 to 39 years. Each year in the United States, injury claims about 170,000 lives and results in over 30 million emergency room visits and 2.5 million hospitalizations. Injury is medically defined as organ/tissue damages inflicted upon oneself or by an external agent either accidentally or deliberately. Injury encompasses the undesirable consequences of a wide array of events, such as motor vehicle crashes, poisoning, burns, falls, and drowning, medical error, adverse effects of drugs, suicide and homicide. The past two decades have witnessed a remarkable growth in injury research, both in scope and in depth. To address the tremendous health burden of injury morbidity and mortality at the global level, the World Health Organization in 2000 created the Department of Injury and Violence Prevention, which has produced several influential reports on violence, traffic injury, and childhood injury. The biennial World Conference on Injury Control and Safety Promotion attracts a large international audience and has been successfully convened nine times in different countries. In the United States, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control became an independent program of the federal Centers for Disease Prevention and Control in 1997. Since then, each state health department has created an office in charge of injury prevention activities and over a dozen universities have established injury control research centers. This volume will fill an important gap in the scientific literature by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date reference resource to researchers, practitioners, and students working on different aspects of the injury problem and in different practice settings and academic fields.

It contains the results of a study that examined the speeding behavior of drivers in their own vehicles over the course of three to four weeks of naturalistic driving in urban (Seattle, Washington) and rural (College Station, Texas) settings. The purpose of this research was to (1) identify the reasons why drivers speed, (2) model the relative roles of situational, demographic, and personality factors in predicting travel speeds, (3) classify speeders, and (4) identify interventions, countermeasures, and strategies for reducing speeding behaviors. Data collected from 164 drivers included 1-Hz recordings of vehicle position and speed using a GPS receiver, responses to a battery of a personal inventory questionnaires, and daily driving logs that captured trip-specific situational factors. Vehicle speed and position data were combined with road network data containing validated posted speed information to identify speeding episodes. The descriptive analysis of speeding data provided evidence for different types of speeding behaviors among individual drivers including (1) infrequent or incidental speeding, which may be unintentional; (2) trip-specific situational speeding; (3) taking many trips with a small amount of speeding per trip (i.e., casual speeding); and (4) habitual or chronic speeding. Regression models were developed to identify predictors of "any" speeding (logistic regression) and amount of speeding (linear regressions). Significant predictors included demographic variables such as age and gender, situational factors such as time-of-day and day-of-week, and key personal inventory factors such as attitudes towards reckless driving.
