Book excerpt: The third edition of this popular and successful text has been fully revised and updated to take account of recent advances in the field, particularly in the physiology and pathophysiology of many disease processes. The text retains the original format of relevant physiology, test selection and test interpretation by case example. Essential aspects of paediatric chemical pathology, inborn errors of metabolism, reproductive endocrinology, tumours and toxicology are now included. As chemical pathology is receiving specific attention in medical courses, this text has been adapted to present this information in an understandable form, making it suitable for medical undergraduates and for medical and science postgraduates studying for exams of Colleges of Pathology and professional associations."

Book excerpt: "Advanced Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology, Second Edition, systematically details the effect of acute and chronic exercise training on each component of the cardiovascular system: the heart, the vasculature, and the blood. This text is divided into two sections, beginning with a concise explanation of the structure and function of each component of the cardiovascular system. In the second section, readers encounter detailed discussion of the acute and chronic effects of aerobic and resistance exercise on cardiac function, vascular function, and hemostatic variables. Each chapter begins with chapter objectives and ends with and a summary. Fifteen case studies are included in the text to showcase the application of chapter material"--

Book excerpt: Ideally suited for those clinicians who have already mastered basic principles, The Practice of Clinical Echocardiography, 6th Edition, provides expert guidance on interpreting echocardiographic images and Doppler flow data. Through practical, clear, and carefully edited content, world-renowned expert Dr. Catherine M. Otto and her team of more than 65 leaders in echocardiography demonstrate how to apply advanced knowledge to daily clinical decision making. Newly reorganized sections cover advanced principles for the echocardiographer, best practices for echocardiography laboratories, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, intraoperative and interventional echocardiography, and point-of-care cardiac ultrasound. Provides an in-depth, clear, and concise review of the latest clinical applications of echocardiography with an advanced level of discussion, now thoroughly updated with new clinical knowledge, new treatments and guidelines, the latest evidence, and innovations in advanced echocardiographic imaging. Reviews the technical aspects of data acquisition and analysis with an emphasis on outcomes. Covers key topics such as transcatheter interventions for valvular heart disease, prosthetic valve dysfunction, the athletic heart, cardiac assist devices, cardio-oncology, heart disease in pregnancy, advanced 3D echocardiography, strain imaging, stress echocardiography, and much more. Includes updated illustrations throughout—nearly 1,000 echocardiograms, Doppler tracings, anatomic drawings, and flow charts for diagnostic approaches—as well as hundreds of echo video clips keyed to images in the text. Discusses limitations, pitfalls, and alternate approaches. Features chapter summary boxes with new “Quick Reviews” and a practical approach to echocardiographic data acquisition, measurement, and interpretation.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart disease is the leading cause of female mortality worldwide. As a treatment, exercise can improve cardiac and endothelial function, increase bone mineral density, promote lean muscle mass, and improve pulmonary function. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of two different modes of exercise on flow mediated dilation in the brachial artery in college-aged women. Ten recreationally active women were assigned to either a high intensity interval group (HT) or a group who completed strength exercises and high intensity interval exercise, called the concurrent exercise group (CT). Measurements of flow mediated dilation (i.e., the hyperemic response of a blood vessel post occlusion) were taken at baseline, after one workout session, and after three workout sessions. There were no differences for FDM% or brachial artery diameter across all time points for either training protocol. Neither a combination of high-intensity interval exercise and resistance exercise or high-intensity interval exercise alone acutely led to structural or functional changes in the brachial artery in recreationally active healthy young women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first primer on the effects of exercise on human hypertension, Effects of Exercise on Hypertension: From Cells to Physiological Systems provides the state-of-the-art effects of exercise on the many possible mechanisms underlying essential hypertension in humans. The book contains chapters by distinguished experts on the effects of exercise on physiological systems known to be involved in hypertension development and maintenance as well as less well known aspects of hypertension such as 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure profile and oxidative stress. An emerging area, the effects of resistance exercise training on blood pressure is also covered. A unique aspect of the book is that it covers the effects of exercise mimetics on vascular cell adaptations in order to begin to elucidate some of the cellular mechanisms that may underlie blood pressure reductions with exercise training. Lastly, the book will end with a chapter on the interactive effects of genes and exercise on blood pressure. Chapters are grouped by physiological system or mechanism. The text begins with two overview chapters; one on the general effects of aerobic exercise training and the second on the general effects of resistance exercise training on blood pressure. Each chapter begins with a bulleted list of key points. Effects of Exercise on Hypertension: From Cells to Physiological Systems will be of great value to professional individuals in cardiovascular medicine, the cardiovascular sciences, allied health care professionals, and medical and graduate students in the cardiovascular sciences and medicine.

At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.
