Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent Global Financial Crisis (GFC) was seen as negatively affecting the Philippines in a different way. Most of the countries affected by the GFC suffered export declines and domestic economic slowdown leading to collapse of certain sectors in the economy. Though the Philippines was affected this way in some aspects, it is more the unique nature of its economy having around 10% of its population abroad working or permanently settled but continuing to send a significant amount of remittances. It as the concern of the Philippines that the crisis affecting many of the destination countries of its migrant workers will lead to massive layoffs and create a much larger crisis at home. Based on the hypothesis, this study attempted to view how the GFC actually affected the economy by directly looking at the impacts on the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families left behind in the Philippines and how they coped with the perceived effects of the crisis. The quantitative aspect of the study used a semi-structured questionnaire that profied the demographic characteristics and determined the coping strategies of the respondents. A focus group discussion with ten(10) of the respondents for the purpose of triangulating the date gathered by the questionnaire was also done. The results showed that the number of affected households indicated decreases in their family income during the crisis period of compared to previous years. It is noteworthy that there were relatively few affected workers who returned home. Majority stayed abroad hoping for better opportunites in their affected host countries rather than returning home. The families-left-behind also adjusted to the crisis by implementing coping strategies such as cuts in spending (primarily in recreation, food and utilities), seeking extra jobs/sideline and decreasing their allocation for savings. The findings of the study also suggest factors such as demographic characteristics of the OFW, the household profile and perceptions were also important in explaining the odds of the OFWs to return to the home country for good. The income generated by HH members (0.9631) was significant at .05. Age of the OFW (1.0691), the number of members of the HH (1.3730), and the number of years the OFW has been working (0.9026) wre all significant at 0.1. The odds estimates of OFWs returning home for good based on perception about job opportunities in PHL (3.0084) and based on perception of GFC affecting the OFWs host country (2.7975) were also significant at 0.10. This implied that despite retrenchment and unemployment, most migrant workers avoided returning to the Philippines just yet. Those who returned trie to leave again as soon as possible. Many were planning to work overseas for up to 10 years more before setting back, while some intended to leave the country and establish life (be citizens) in their host countries. This calls for refreshed attention to assessments on the sectoral level and the reintegration (mechanisms and programs) of returning workers to the industries in the Philippines.
Book Synopsis Impact of Global Crisis on Migrant Workers and Families by : Asian Development Bank

This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines the impact of the crisis among migrant workers and their families---with gender perspective---to provide useful information for better evidence-based policy making. Based on household surveys in Indonesia and the Philippines, the results show that women are in worse condition and are more vulnerable than men. Women migrants still have lower education and skills, reflected in their inferior jobs. They face greater difficulties in reintegration when they return, forcing them to return abroad. Women also bear a heavier burden due to their gendered role in the family, and those who stay are more often unemployed or in vulnerable employment. Moreover, despite strong views that the man should be the breadwinner and the one going abroad, the increasing feminization of current migration indicates that necessity is a strong push factor forcing more women to go abroad. These findings further strengthen the call for considering gender in migration policies.

Book excerpt: Anecdotal evidence permeates accounts on the impact of the global economic crisis on Philippine poverty. This study systematically assesses the evidence and recent data. It adopts a somewhat eclectic approach as applying regression and decomposition techniques to trace the impact of the global economic crisis on gross domestic product and its major components, constructing panel data from nationally representative household surveys to trace the changes in household welfare during the crisis, and combining national income accounts and household survey data to simulate the differential effects of the crisis across population groups and social divides. Empirical findings suggest that although the Philippine economy did not slide to recession during the crisis, its impact on the economy and poverty across population groups was nonetheless severe---and may linger for many years to come.
Book Synopsis The Financial Crisis, Oil Price Hike, the Arab Spring and Foreign Demand for Filipino Workers by : Edita A. Tan
Download or read book The Financial Crisis, Oil Price Hike, the Arab Spring and Foreign Demand for Filipino Workers written by Edita A. Tan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper inquires into the impact of contemporary major world events - the recession in the United States and Western Europe, the oil price hike, and the Arab Spring - on the flow of overseas Filipino workers or OFWs and their remittances. The paper finds that the recession in the West has not spread worldwide for its share in world trade has declined significantly since the 1980s. The oil exporting countries gained from the oil price hike and there are now many more economies that have achieved appreciable growth which they have been able to sustain up to the present, e.g. the Asian tigers, BRICs, Botswana. On the other hand, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria are minor employers of Filipino workers. Expectedly, the varied economic performance of the world economies has had differential impact on demand for migrant workers. The OFWs have found employment in varied occupations in varied destinations with the large majority in the Middle East and East Asia which have not been negatively affected by the Western recession. Many are also in service occupations that did not suffer as much decline in demand as in other occupations. The paper provides some empirical support to these findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth perspectives in emerging market economies are increasingly dependent on international capital flows in recent decades because of their influences on business cycles. In fact, volatile international capital flows has been one of the main concerns for the macroeconomic policy authorities. Focusing on emerging economies in the Pacific region, this book reveals how they are different from those in other regions in terms of international macro-financial linkages to the global capital market and domestic financial development,. The book also discusses how these characteristics have interacted with their macroeconomic policy regimes and their macroeconomic performance throughout the two major international financial crises in the past more than two decades. It suggests facts that have strengthened the resilience of these emerging economies in the Pacific region against the global financial crisis along with the intensified intra-regional economic integration through trade and investment. The book also examines their macroeconomic management focusing on monetary policy regimes and suggests that their factual unorthodox policies with exchange rate management and capital controls have contributed to their resilience against the intrinsic volatility of the international capital market and financial flows.
