Book excerpt: The effect of low velocity projectile impact on sandwich-type structural components was investigated. The materials used in the fabrication of the impact surface were graphite-, Kevlar-, and boron-fibers with appropriate epoxy matrices. The testing of the specimens was performed at moderately low- and high-temperatures as well as at room temperature to assess the impact-initiated strength degradation of the laminates. Eleven laminates with different stacking sequences, orientations, and thicknesses were tested. The low energy projectile impact is considered to simulate the damage caused by runway debris, the dropping of the hand tools during servicing, etc., on the secondary aircraft structures fabricated with the composite materials. The results show the preload and the impact energy combinations necessary to cause catastrophic failure in the laminates tested. A set of faired curves indicating the failure thresholds is shown separately for the tension-and compression-loaded laminates. The specific-strengths and -modulii for the various laminates tested are also given. Sharma, A. V. Unspecified Center NASA-CR-162718 NSG-1296...

Book excerpt: The rising demand to reduce fuel consumption and the continuous increase of materials and manufacturing costs has obliged aircraft manufacturers to boost the use of composite materials and to optimise the manufacturing methods. Foam core sandwich structures combine the advantages of high bending properties with low manufacturing costs when liquid composite processes are used. However, the use of foam core sandwich structures is not widespread in aircraft applications due to the better weight-specific performance of honeycomb cores and the susceptibility to impact loading. In this context, pin reinforcements are added to the foam core to improve its mechanical properties and its damage tolerance. This work contributes to the understanding of the mechanical behaviour of pin-reinforced foam core sandwich structures under static and impact loading. Ultrasonic scan and micro-computed tomography are used to identify the different damage modes. The effect of very low temperature on the damage behaviour under impact loading is investigated. An explicit simulation model to predict the impact response of pin-reinforced foam core sandwich structures is also proposed.

Book excerpt: The Behavior of Sandwich Structures of Isotropic and Composite Materials presents the mathematics, descriptions, and analytical techniques in the growing field of sandwich structures. From a background in sandwich structures to thermoelastic problems of sandwich structures and sandwich shell theory, the book provides the knowledge needed to analyze, design, and optimize various sandwich structures. As one would expect from a book on sandwich structures, this volume discusses special failure modes such as face wrinkling and core shear instability. Coverage includes not only honeycomb cores, but also foam, web, and truss cores. An important topic in composite structure design, optimization is explored in two chapters on sandwich plates and sandwich shells. The author presents the optimization techniques in closed form and the methods are applicable to material selection and geometric design. The book also contains a set of problems and references at the end of each chapter. This text is ideal for engineers-in-training, as well as practical engineers who desire a comprehensive understanding of sandwich structures technology.

Carlsson and George A. Kardomateas focuses on some important deformation and failure modes of sandwich panels such as global buckling, wrinkling and local instabilities, and face/core debonding. The book also provides the mechanics background necessary for understanding deformation and failure mechanisms in sandwich panels and the response of sandwich structural parts to a variety of loadings. Specifically, first-order and high-order sandwich panel theories, and three-dimensional elasticity solutions for the structural behavior outlined in some detail. Elasticity analysis can serve as a benchmark for judging the accuracy of simplified sandwich plate, shell and beam theories. Furthermore, the book reviews test methods developed for the characterization of the constituent face and core materials, and sandwich beams and plates. The characterization of face/core debonding is a major topic of this text, and analysis methods based on fracture mechanics are described and applied to several contemporary test specimens. Test methods and results documented in the literature are included and discussed. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers with the desire to learn more about structural behavior, failure mechanisms, fracture mechanics and damage tolerance of sandwich structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites are used extensively in engineering applications. A constant concern is the effect of foreign object impacts on composite structures because significant damage can occur and yet be undetectable by visual inspection. Such impacts can range from the most ordinary at low velocity - a tool dropped on a product - to the hypervelocity impact of space debris on a spacecraft. This book explains how damage develops during impact, the effect of impact-induced damage on the mechanical behavior of structures, and methods of damage prediction and detection. Numerous examples are included to illustrate these topics. Written for graduate students, as well as researchers and practising engineers working with composite materials, this book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on impact dynamics while requiring only basic understanding of the mechanics of composite materials.

Book excerpt: Much of the early, pioneering work on the properties of composites under impact is still conceptually relevant, yet the results of many such analyses are outdated. The accuracy of these results depend specifically on the materials used (fibre, resin), interface, and method of fabrication. Development of new materials, cost effective design, and analysis and prediction of structural behaviour have all established a need for timely, wide ranging research on impact behaviour. Impact Behaviour of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Materials and Structures brings together - for the first time - state-of-the-art research from the most recent works of leading, international experts. An important new study, this book extensively investigates impact response, damage tolerance, and failure of fibre-reinforced composite materials and structure, from a number of expert viewpoints. This book explores the nature of modern polymer composites based on glass, carbon, aramid, ceramic and polymer fibres in a polymer matrix, and details various ways of analysing the impact process. Impact Behaviour of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Materials and Structures will prove itself a valuable tool for research and development engineers, structural engineers, materials scientists, designers, and students and researchers of related disciplines.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact responses and the damage states in flat composite sandwich panels with thin face sheets were investigated in Phase I and were found to be dependent on the diameter of the spherical steel impactor. The residual strength of impact-damaged sandwich panels under static in-plane compressive loads was reported to be dependent on the nature of the damage state. The impact damage due to blunt impactors is difficult to detect in service and depending on the size of the damage, can degrade the residual strength more than a punctured skin. The detectability of impact damage states using different field inspection techniques was experimentally investigated for different facesheet and core combinations. The impact damage in honeycomb core sandwich panels was better detected using instruments that exploit the local vibrational characteristics of the sandwich structure, while the damage in foam core panels was more amenable to acoustic-based techniques. The effect of facesheet stiffness on the sensitivity of the field inspection techniques was investigated and the results are reported. The behavior of the sandwich panels with impact damage and subjected to the in-plane static compressive loads was investigated in detail. The impact damage behaved in a characteristic sequence of events leading to contrasting final failure modes. The sequence of events was found to be dependent on the facesheet stiffness and the transverse compressive properties of the core material. The effects of panel curvature on the impact damage resistance of sandwich panels were experimentally investigated for limited sandwich configurations. The effects of the radius of cylindrical panels, boundary conditions, facesheet type, and core type were also examined. The decreasing radius of curvature increased the global bending stiffness but decreased the local contact stiffness due to the radial compressive properties of the honeycomb core.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to examine the fluid structure interaction (FSI) effect on composite sandwich structures under a low velocity impact. The primary sandwich composite used in this study was a 6.35-mm balsa core and a multi-ply symmetrical plain weave 6 oz E-glass skin. The specific geometry of the composite was a 305 by 305 mm square with clamped boundary conditions. Using a uniquely designed vertical drop-weight testing machine, there were three fluid conditions in which these experiments focused. The first of these conditions was completely dry (or air) surrounded testing. The second condition was completely water submerged. The final condition was a wet top/air-backed surrounded test. The tests were conducted progressively from a low to high drop height to best conclude the onset and spread of damage to the sandwich composite when impacted with the test machine. The measured output of these tests was force levels and multi-axis strain performance. The collection and analysis of this data will help to increase the understanding of the study of sandwich composites, particularly in a marine environment.

Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students.
