Book excerpt: Development of microstructure during thermomechanical processing of an Al-10%Mg-O,1%Zr alloy was examined in the initial portion of this research. The thermomechanical processing involved solution treating; not working by upset forging at 440 C followed by warm rolling material were deformed at three strain rates at temperatures of 200 C, 300 C, and 400 C and were microstructurally examined. It is found that this alloy statically recrystallizes prior to commencing a test at 400 C, the resultant grains deform by boundary sliding and there is extensive cavitation. During lower temperature deformation it was found that either continuous recrystallization or just with no recrystallization occurs and little or no cavitation takes place.

Book excerpt: The deformation characteristics of two thermomechanically processed, high-Magnesium, Aluminum-Magnesium-Zirconium alloys were investigated. The processing included warm rolling at 300 C to 90-95% reduction. Tension testing was done at various temperatures and strain rates and superplastic elongations were observed for both alloys. Subsequently, samples of A1-10%Mg-0.1% Zr were tested at 300 C to strains ranging from 8% to 267% as well as to fracture. Strain rates of .00667/S and .000667/s were used. These were examined via TEM to observe microstructural changes which occur during deformation. Quantitative analysis of the functional relationship between stress, strain, strain rate, and grain size for this alloy is done in an attempt to fit it's deformation response to current models for superplastic deformation.

Book excerpt: Superplasticity is shown to be a universal phenomenon in materials ranging from metals and intermetallics to ceramics. Superplastic deformation facilitates the production of materials with specifically chosen properties. This is illustrated using the examples of Mg-, Al-, and Ti-based commercial alloys, steels, and superalloys. Some of the strenghts of this book are: the broad range of materials studied, the reduction of scientific results to a form suitable for the practitioner, a profound physical analysis of the phenomenon, a new approach to superplastic treatment as a kind of strain-heat treatment, the presentation of new data on superplastic flow and on production techniques of micro- and submicrocrystalline structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into microstructural evolution during processing and superplastic deformation of an Al-10Mg-0.1Zr alloy was conducted. Processing schedules were modified to enhance particle-stimulated nucleation of recrystallization and refine subsequent gain size. Strain rates varying over three orders of magnitude were utilized in subsequent testing of processed material. At lower strain rates of about 10-4 sec-1 coarsening of the microstructure was apparent and elongations of 277% were obtained. A strain rate of 10-3 sec-1 resulted in lesser coarsening and elongations of 650%. A model of deformation by grain boundary sliding in association with microstructural coarsening is presented.

Book excerpt: In previous work, the room temperature mechanical properties of an Al-10Mg-0.1Zr alloy were evaluated after simulated, superplastic forming at a temperature of 300 C (573K). A variation of ductility from 1 to 14% elongation was observed in the room temperature test data. To examine the cause of this variability, the processing schedule was changed to one incorporating more severe reductions during rolling. This resulted in a lesser range of variability in room temperature ductility, but the material no longe behaved superplastically. Elongations at 300 C of only 161% at a maximum were recorded although the small grain size required for good superplasticity apparently was developed. SEM and optical microscopy was then done to investigate the cause of this loss of superplastic behavior. Keywords: Superplasticity, Ductility, Aluminum magnesium, Alloys, thermomechanical, Processing, Aluminum alloys.

Book excerpt: Superplasticity in AA8090 Al-Li alloy has been a subject of extensive studies, due to its potential for commercial applications since last decade. However, the anisotropy and microstructural gradient existing in this material introduce additional complication in understanding the mechanisms for superplastic deformation and has resulted in a debate about the role of dislocation activity. This has necessitated a more detailed microstructural study, especially texture, than that is commonly required to understand the deformation mechanism in other superplastic materials. Attempt has been made in this investigation to achieve this by means of microstructural characterization of specimens deformed in ten ion by using optical microscopy, TEM, SEM and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microstructural characterization of the as-received material showed that there were three distinct layers in the cross-section of the sheet. Pancake grains in the center layer of about 1/3 thickness with brass-type texture, and nearly equiaxed grains on either side of it of about 1/3 thickness with copper texture. Tensile tests were conducted over a temperature range of $25{-}570\sp\circ$C and a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-2}/s.$ Optimum superplastic conditions were found in a temperature range of 500-530$\sp\circ$C and in a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-3}/s.$ These deformation conditions yielded the maximum value of strain rate sensitivity index $\rm(m \approx 0.5)$ and the minimum value of instability parameter (I). During superplastic deformation, there occurred grain growth, texture weakening and change in grain shape. The disappearance of initial microstructural gradient occurred at a strain of about 1.0. The relationship between grain size (d) and strain $(\varepsilon)$ could be expressed as $\rm d\propto\varepsilon\sp{q}, $ with the value of exponent q ranging from 0.21-0.44 depending on the test temperature. Book excerpt: The scientific understanding of high-velocity deformation has advanced substantially during the past decade. On the one hand, the framework for a theory explaining the metallurgical effects of shock waves is beginning to take shape; on the other hand, the technological applications of high strain-rate processes have found their way into industries in countries around the world. Ex plosive cladding, welding, forming, compaction and consolidation, cutting, and hardening, in addition to high energy-rate deformation processes using other energy sources, are some of the topics of contemporary technological importance. Metallurgical effects are of the utmost importance in both the scientific understanding of the phenomena involved, and in the successful development and utilization of the associated applications. The international conference upon which this book is based had as its major objectives the acceleration of progress in the field of high-strain rate deformation and fabrication, including applications, by providing a forum for the exchange of state-of-the art information on the metallurgical effects of high strain-rate deformation and fabrication; and the organization of this informa tion into a timely and coherent body of knowledge focused around significant areas and applications. This volume is a manifestation of these objectives. In addition, the contents of this book were organized to provide for a somewhat logical perspective of the fundamentals, development, and state-of-the-art applications of high strain-rate and shock phenomena.

Book excerpt: Grain size is recognized as a key microstructural factor affecting mechanical and, to some extent, physical properties of metals and metallic materials. For this reason, all the means designed to control and modify the grain size are considered a proper way to design and tailor metallic materials with desired properties. In this sense, microstructure refinement through severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques can be considered a key method for this purpose. A typical SPD process is currently defined as any method of metal forming under extensive hydrostatic pressure intended to impose a very high strain on a bulk solid without involving any significant change in the overall dimensions and having the ability to produce exceptional grain refinement. What makes SPD processing techniques so popular and attractive is the possibility of using them to enhance the strength behavior of conventional metallic materials by a factor of up to eight for pure metals such as copper and by some 30-50% for alloys. Despite the impressive property improvement achievable with SPD techniques, their uptake by industry has been rather sluggish. This book intends to give a panorama of the typical SPD techniques intended to optimize the mechanical and physical properties of metals through a significant grain size reduction process. Modeling for this purpose is also presented.

Book excerpt: The effect of thermal processing on the mechanical properties of superplastically formed structural components fabricated from three aluminum-lithium alloys was evaluated. The starting materials consisted of 8090, 2090, and X2095 (Weldalite(TM) 049), in the form of commercial-grade superplastic sheet. The experimental test matrix was designed to assess the impact on mechanical properties of eliminating solution heat treatment and/or cold water quenching from post-forming thermal processing. The extensive hardness and tensile property data compiled are presented as a function of aging temperature, superplastic strain and temper/quench rate for each alloy. The tensile properties of the materials following superplastic forming in two T5-type tempers are compared with the baseline T6 temper. The implications for simplifying thermal processing without degradation in properties are discussed on the basis of the results. Hales, Stephen J. and Lippard, Henry E. Unspecified Center...
