The purpose of my action-research study was to answer the following three research questions: 1. What changes occur in students' test scores and overall grades when a variety of parental contacts are made over a six-week period? 2. How can I promote parental involvement? 3. What can I do to educate parents on how to become more effectively involved in their child's education? To answer these questions I selected ten parents, whose children were currently receiving grades below a 69% in 7th grade mathematics and who have not contacted me after the first nine weeks of the semester. I used three different methods to contact the parents, phones call, emails, and notes in students' planners. All three methods showed a lack of parental feedback and involvement. Nevertheless, five students showed an increase in the second marking period, four showed a decrease, and one stayed the same.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to see if there was a positive impact on student achievement when specific parent communication with the school exists. There were low API scores and a lack of meaningful connections between parents, students, and teachers. The research question was, How does customized parent-teacher communication about student learning impact student achievement? Customized communication is a blending of Epstein’s (1995) Type 2 communicating and Type 4 learning at home. To improve student achievement via improving parent-teacher communication, customized communication took the form of a weekly newsletter. The study took place at one high school located in Southern California. Spanish 1 and 2 classes and their parents were part of the study. Before intervention, a chapter test served as a pretest to provide class test averages and revealed similarity among the control and experimental classes. Parents were surveyed to gather the type of desired communication they wanted in a newsletter. Intervention was given in the form of weekly newsletters to two experimental classes using customized communication about student learning. Finally, a chapter test served as a post-test to reveal any changes in class test score averages as a result of customized communication. A quantitative methodology was used. Data were collected and analyzed through student pretest averages, a parent survey, and student post-test averages. Through personal communication, parents expressed positive perceptions of the intervention. However, a t-Test to compare pre and post test averages, revealed that the null hypothesis must be rejected. There was no significant change in test averages as a result of the intervention. This study could be expanded with more time to see if more customized-communication would impact student achievement. It is a study that opens the door to continue communication that parents value.

Drawing on this literature, national taskforces and federal legislation consistently identify increased parental involvement as a central goal of educational reform initiatives (e.g. No Child Left Behind, Title I, Part A, Section 1118). Schools attempt to promote greater parental engagement though a variety of efforts centered on teacher-parent communication (Epstein, 2008). Cheung and Pomerantz (2012) found that children whose parents were more likely to be involved with their learning were more likely to be motivated to meet their parents' academic expectations, and received higher grades. Recent experimental research has documented how two-way teacher-parent communication can lead to greater parental involvement, improved student engagement and academic achievement (Authors, 2013; Bergman, 2012). This study examines the effect of delivering to parents weekly messages written by teachers about each child's performance in school, and the authors explore how these effects differ across different message types. This is accomplished by conducting a field experiment during a summer credit recovery program in a large urban school district. Researchers randomly assigned participating students and their parents to one of three experimental conditions. Some parents received information throughout the summer program about what their students were doing well and should continue doing; others received information about what their students needed to improve upon, while a third group received no information. The research sought to answer two questions: (1) What is the effect of teacher-to-parent communication on the probability a student earns course credit in a credit recovery program; and 2) Are positive or needs-improvement messages more effective at increasing a student's likelihood of earning course credit? This research contributes to a growing body of evidence on the beneficial impact that teachers providing parents with individualized messages and information about their children's schoolwork can have on student achievement and advancement in school. This study also points to the importance of further examining how teachers and schools can improve the content and quality of their communication with parents. Tables are appended.

Book excerpt: For the past 30 years, student performance in science and mathematics in the United States has remained at disappointing levels. In comparison to 20 other nations in advanced mathematics and physics, students in the United States scored significantly lower in advanced mathematics, and only one country scored lower in physics (NCES, 1997). In short, improving mathematics achievement among U.S. students is a long-standing issue. This study explored the features of a program that focused on increasing parental involvement in their children's mathematics education. It investigated what specific qualities of teacher-to-parent and school-to-parent involvement accompany a program that successfully involved parents. In addition, other aspects that involved parents successfully in their children's mathematics education were identified. Using qualitative methods to collect and analyze data, parents, teachers, and administrators in one of the 25 largest school districts in the country who participated in this program were interviewed. From this data, the researcher concluded that the instructional program actively engaged parents; enhanced parent and teacher relationships; increased the range of options for parents to communicate with teachers and enhanced the ease and comfort of their communication. Parents indicated that the program was relevant to their concerns, focused on helping them improve the academic achievement of their children, and provided a substantive amount of parent-teacher contact. The program quality and the knowledge parents gained about algebra empowered them to become more involved in their child's learning. In doing so it ultimately improved parent-child relationships as they related to mathematics and school in general. Participation in the program led to parents gaining confidence due to a better understanding on how mathematics should be taught to their children. This study indicates that much work must continue to occur to educate parents about new educational practices and also inform educators about their responsibility to connect with parents regarding curriculum and instruction. The challenge has three dimensions. While schools and teachers need to provide access to such initiatives, parents, in turn, need to avail themselves to the opportunities offered. On the third level, students must not be forgotten in the planning and implementation of parental outreach initiatives.

Book excerpt: The number of English learners in California's public schools continues to increase as does the gap in their academic achievement. The state requires districts to meet the academic needs of all students and allocates increased funding to specifically meet the high needs of EL students. One approach to closing the EL achievement gap is by seeking parent involvement and parent engagement. The purpose of this study was to determine in what ways parents and teachers engage in communication to support EL student achievement in a dual language immersion program and not in a dual language immersion program. A qualitative case study was conducted to determine ways parents and teachers engage in communication to support student achievement and whether barriers to communication exist. Four teachers and 24 parents were anonymously surveyed, and responses were analyzed for themes and compared to previous research. Results showed parents and teachers feel increasing parent-teacher communication increases student achievement. Barriers to communication were revealed including time constraints and parents' poor digital literacy. The results were analyzed through a cultural proficiency lens and indicate there are cultural barriers to parent-teacher communication. Results also revealed a disconnect between teachers' and parents' perception of effective communication. Additional research is needed to be able to generalize what parents perceive as effective forms of communication. Based on the results from this study, schools and districts would benefit from better understanding parents' perspectives on the home-school connection, specifically on effective parent-teacher communication.
