Book excerpt: Because of the interest in swept-back wings for high-speed airplanes an analysis has been made of readily available data on the longitudinal stability characteristics of swept-back wings at low-speeds. The analysis indicated that the shape of the pitching-moment curve near the stall for swept-back wings is greatly dependent upon the aspect ratio. A chart has been prepared relating aspect ratio and sweepback that indicates the combinations of aspect ratio and sweepback necessary to obtain stability near the stall for wings alone. The effect of the addition of a horizontal tail behind a swept-back wing may be destabilizing and requires further investigation.

Book excerpt: Results and discussion are presented of a low-speed lateral-control investigation of three untapered unswept wings of aspect ratio 1.13, 2.13, and 4.13 and an untapered 45 degrees sweptback wing of aspect ratio 2.09 equipped with 0.60-semispan retractable ailerons having various projections. Continuous-span ailerons were tested at outboard stations on the unswept wings, and plain (continuous span) and stepped (segmented) ailerons were tested at various spanwise stations with and without simulated actuating arms on the sweptback wing.

Book excerpt: The use of large amounts of sweep has been suggested in this country and in Germany as a means of avoiding some of the drag increase and stability and control difficulties encountered in high-speed flight with conventional straight-wing airplanes. Experience with sweep in tailless airplanes and studies made since this suggested has been made have indicated that the use of a large amount of sweep will, in itself, introduce stability and control problems of sufficient magnitude and complexity to require considerable research, particularly for flight at high angles of attack. The paper discusses these problems and, although no proved solutions are given, in some cases promising lines for further investigation are presented.

Book excerpt: Lift, pitching-moment, and pressure distribution were measured on a wing which was swept -40, -30, 0, 35, and 45 degrees. The wing span was decreased to give aspect ratios 6.8, 5.3, 4.2, 3.4, and 2.8. The effects of independent variations of sweep and aspect ratio on the lift, pitching-moment, and span-load characteristics of the wings are compared with the effects estimated by use of the Weissinger method.

Book excerpt: Air-flow characteristics behind wings and wing-body combinations are described and are related to the downwash at specific tail locations for unseparated and separated flow conditions. The effects of various parameters and control devices on the air-flow characteristics and tail contribution are analyzed and demonstrated. An attempt has been made to summarize certain data in a form useful for design. The experimental data herein were obtained mostly at Reynolds numbers greater than 4 x 105 and at Mach numbers less than 0.25.

Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability.

Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted at speeds up to a Mach number of 0.90 to determine the effects of operating propellers on the longitudinal characteristics of a four-engine tractor airplane configuration having a 40 degrees swept wing with an aspect ratio of 10. Results of wind-tunnel tests of a model representing such an airplane configuration (see NACA TN 3789) show that these effects are of most concern in the low-speed high-thrust flight regime. In the present report the low-speed data are analyzed to determine the source of the various effects and to indicate how the adverse effects can be reduced, and the high-speed data are discussed primarily from the standpoint of Mach number effects. The analysis of the low-speed data indicates that the large variations of longitudinal stabil.itywith angle of attack resulted primarily from passage of the tail into and out of the slipstream. The slipstream also created large lift increments on the wing, particularly with flaps deflected, which resulted in increases in stability (with increasing thrust coefficient) from the outboard propeller and decreases in stability from the inboard propeller. It was concluded that the longitudinal stabiltty characteristics of the model couldbe improved by moving the nacelles outward, increasing the tail height, and reducing the tail span.

This book was released on 1949 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made in the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effect of airfoil profile of symmetrical sections on the rolling derivatives of three untapered wings having 45 deg sweepback. The wings had the following profiles normal to the leading edge: biconvex (12% thick), NACA 65 sub 1 -012, and NACA 0012. The AR for each wing was 2.61. Calculations were made to determine the effect of different wing profiles on the stability boundaries and motions at subsonic speeds of a typical transonic airplane configuration. Results indicate that increasing the sharpness of the leading edge of the airfoil decreased the range of lift coefficients over which the derivatives maintained their initial trends and usually decreased the maximum values of the derivatives obtained in the unstalled range. Results of the calculations of the dynamic stability of the airplane configuration show only small changes in stability due to changes in airfoil profile.
