Batch and column studies were conducted to investigate the sorption processes and transport behavior of Cu(II) in a sandy soil in the presence of surfactants. SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and Triton X-100 were chosen as representatives of an anionic surfactant and a nonionic surfactant, respectively. Results showed that the anionic surfactant (SDS) significantly decreased the retention of Cu(II) in the sandy soil and was more effective in removal of Cu(III) than the nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100) in the both batch and column experiments. Further, both SDS and Triton X-100 appeared more effective in removing Cu(II) under increasing acidic conditions. Description of the sorption process and transport of heavy metals is necessary for identifying the fate of heavy metals in soils. The batch-generated sorption isotherms were found to be quantitatively higher than those calculated in columns. The sorption processes of Cu(III) in the soil column showed a strong nonequilibrium. Both a first-order kinetic model and a two-region model were not capable of describing the entire experimental breakthrough curve (BIC) in most instances.

Numerical simulation results indicate that mass-transfer limiting desorption of the cationic surfactant will likely occur within an enhanced sorbent zone.

Book excerpt: When surfactant solution is flowing in a reservoir formation, surfactants will be diluted by flow dispersion, retained in dead-end pores, adsorbed on rock surfaces, or precipitated due to ion exchange. The loss of surfactant will be detrimental to the performance of gas foam. Information of surfactant concentration profiles in reservoir formations is essential for gas foaming technique development. The major objective of this research is to investigate with mathematical models the transport and dynamic adsorption of surfactants in porous media. The mathematical models have taken into account the convection, dispersion, capacitance, and adsorption effects on concentrations of surfactants. Numerical methods and computer programs have been developed which can be used to match experimental results and to determine the characterization parameters in the models. The models can be included in foam simulation programs to calculate surfactant concentration profiles in porous media. A flow experimental method was developed to measure the effluent surfactant concentration, which will be used to determine the model parameters. Commercial foaming agent Alipal CD-128 was used in this study. Equilibrium adsorption and surfactant precipitation have been tested. Tracer solutions with a nonadsorbing solute such as dextrose and sucrose were used to determine the dispersion parameters for the experimental sandpack; thus, the adsorption of the surfactant in the test sand can be identified with an adequate model. 49 refs., 21 figs.

Soil particle-size dependent sorption of surfactants and its effect on HOCs partitioning within soil-water-surfactant systems, although critical in understanding the mechanisms by which the HOCs are removed by these systems, has not been studied well. This dissertation systematically investigated the sorption behavior of three surfactants with different charge properties (TritonRTM X-100 (TX), a nonionic surfactant; linear alkylbenzene sodium (LAS); benzalkonium chloride (BC), a cationic surfactant) and two HOCs, represented by the two most commonly used hydrophobic pesticides (atrazine and diuron), onto soils and soil primary size fractions (clay (2mum), silt (2 & sim;50mum), and sand (50mum) size fractions). Special attention was paid to the effect of surfactant sorption on pesticide sorption and desorption. As relevant to HOC fate and transport in soils, soil colloids transport and deposition within porous media was also examined in this study.

Book excerpt: An immobilization zone can be constructed by modifying soils in the vadose zone with surfactants and, thus, can be used to promote retardation of organic contaminants in the subsurface. Column experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of surfactants and organic contaminants in unsaturated and saturated conditions with different water contents (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). The transport and sorption behavior of two surfactants tested (monoalkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide, dialkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide) in the columns containing an aluminum oxide were similar under the conditions with different water contents. However, transport of a model organic compound (naphthalene) was retarded as the water content decreased by enhanced partitioning of the compound into the surfactants that were sorbed on the aluminum oxide. This suggests that the immobilization method could well be applied to vadose zone. A transport model, CXTFIT 2.1, was also used to evaluate the behavior of the surfactants and naphthalene.
