Book excerpt: Earlier research showed that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content in milk fat is highest when cows' diets are supplemented with a blend of fish oil (FO) and linoleic acid-rich oils. The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of FO and sunflower oil (SFO) supplementation on milk cis -9, trans -11 CLA content and its temporal change when dairy cows managed on pasture or in confinement. Fourteen Holstein cows were assigned into two treatment groups: cows grazed on alfalfa-grass pasture (PAS) or were fed a corn silage-alfalfa hay mix ad libitum (LOT). Both groups were supplemented with 8.2 kg/d grain supplement containing 640 g of FO and SFO (1:3 w/w). Milk samples were collected every third day and during the last 3 days of the experimental period. Milk yield was higher (P 0.05) with the LOT diet compared with the PAS diet. Milk fat percentages and yields were similar (P 0.05) for the two diets. Treatment diets had no effect (P > 0.05) on milk trans C18:1 concentrations (10.64 and 9.82 g/100g of total fatty acids (FA) for the LOT and PAS, respectively) or yields (60.65 and 64.01 g/d), but did affect isomer distributions. Concentration (g/100g of total FA) of vaccenic acid (VA) was lower (P

Book excerpt: A considerable amount of evidence has accumulated in supporting the view that conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids (FA) have beneficial health properties and that the consumption levels of these FA is insufficient in most western diets. In view of their benefits, there has been a considerable interest in enhancing milk and dairy food products with these beneficial FA. The objective of the first trial was to determine the effect of supplementing grazing dairy cows' diet with fish oil (FO) and linseed oil (LSO) on milk c9, t11 CLA and omega-3 FA. Sixteen Holstein cows (170 ± 19 DIM) were divided into 2 groups (n=8 per treatment) and fed a basal diet (8 kg/d; DM basis) consisting of corn, soybean meal, molasses, vitamin/mineral premix plus 800 g saturated animal fat (CONT) or a basal diet plus 200 g FO and 600 g LSO (FOLSO). All cows grazed together on Sudan grass pasture for ad libitum and were fed the treatment diets for 3 wks. Cows were milked twice a day and milk samples were collected during the last three days of the trial. Milk production (24.89 and 22.45 kg/d), milk protein percentages (2.76 and 2.82) and milk protein yield (0.68 and 0.64 kg/d) for the CONT and FOLSO diets, respectively, were not affected ( P > 0.05) by treatment diets. Milk fat percentages (3.90 and 2.86) and milk fat yields (0.97 and 0.64 kg/d) were lower ( P

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Veterinary medicine, Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, language: English, abstract: Objective of this review is focus on effect of feeding protected fat and protected protein on milk yield and its composition and how these nutrients are protected. Many researchers in this review investigate that the responses are highly dependent on the type of fat and protein supplement and the stage of lactation. A higher milk response was observed with saturated than with unsaturated fat supplements. Diet with added fat increase milk production compared with a control diet without added fat in cows. Feeding of bypass fat resulted in significant increase in milk yield and Fat Corrected Milk yield particularly in early lactation. The source of Protected fat are (origin (animal, plant, processed or whole oilseeds, calcium salts) and Cereal Grains such as corn, wheat, Barly, oil seeds, sun flower, cotton seed, soybeans and canola). The supplementation of protected protein in the diets of lactating animals increases the milk yield due to proportionate increase in the supply of amino acids to the host postruminally Milk yield in cows fed protected methionine for the whole experimental period was numerically higher than in cows of the other groups. However, the difference was not statistically significant .At the centeral high land of Ethiopia the Treatment of shredded wheat and barley straw with urea, molasses, salt and water prior to feeding is a technology that should be considered . Cows with excessive body tissue mobilisation at this stage may take up to 20 weeks to regain a positive energy balance status. Key words milk yield, composition ,protected fat , protein protected

Book excerpt: Three experiments were conducted with the goals to; 1) determine conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) effects on energy balance (EBAL) and milk production parameters during periods of nutrient/energy stress, and 2) investigate temporal CLA effects on mammary lipogenic gene expression. Study one was designed to determine if abomasal CLA infusion could reduce milk fat synthesis and partition nutrients towards alternative milk components in feed-restricted rotationally-grazed dairy cows. Data indicate abomasally-infusing CLA reduced milk fat synthesis in nutrient restricted grazing dairy cows and improved calculated EBAL and milk protein production. Another period of transitory stress experienced by the dairy cow is immediately postpartum and study two objectives were to feed rumen inert-CLA to evoke milk fat depression (MFD) and investigate production and bioenergetic parameters. Data indicated a high CLA dose (3x that needed in established lactation) inhibited milk fat synthesis immediately postpartum and improved calculated EBAL in grazing dairy cows. A curvilinear relationship existed between the extent of CLA-induced MFD and milk yield response. Moderate CLA-induced MFD (3̃5%) tended to increase milk yield whereas extensive MFD (3̃5%) diminished this response. Additionally, SCD inhibition was temporally independent indicating SCD activity and membrane fluidity are not the reason for diminished milk yield effects. Furthermore, data indicate that de novo fatty acids and trans-10, cis-12 CLA content don't appreciably change during early lactation, even though the extent of MFD increased, indicating neither NEFA competition nor de novo fatty acid contribution are primary reasons for reduced CLA-mammary sensitivity. Study three investigated intravenous CLA infusion effects on temporal mammary lipogenic gene expression to determine if trans-10, cis-12 CLA down regulates expression of a key gene (i.e. acetyl CoA carboxylase, ACC, the rate limiting enzyme in de novo fatty acid synthesis) and reduction in other mammary lipid synthesis genes is due to lack of substrate (i.e. malonyl CoA), or an alternative indirect mechanism. Data indicated however, that mammary lipogenic genes (ACC, fatty acid synthetase and SCD) followed a similar temporal pattern, providing more support for a global regulator (i.e. sterol regulatory element binding protein-1, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- or nuclear factor-B) rather than a specific key enzyme effect.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of rumen-protected fish oil (RPFO) and rumen-protected marine algae (RPMA) supplements on ovarian function of lactating dairy cows on pasture or in confinement during the estrus and ovulation synchronization period. Thirty-six Holstein cows were assigned to one of the two feeding systems and fed with lipid supplements from 30d before to 100d after calving. The resumption of cyclicity and onset of estrus were not influenced by LS. Mean daily number of the large follicles was similar across the treatments. During the Ovsynch period, RPFO treated cows had larger follicles (?10mm; P

Book excerpt: Recently, there has been considerable interest in the potential health-promoting properties of conjugated linoleic acid (cis-9, trans-11 CLA), a fatty acid produced naturally in ruminant animals, and omega-3 fatty acids. The primary objective of this trail was to determine the effects of varying levels of linseed oil (LSO) on grazing dairy cows' diet on milk cis-9, trans-11 CLA and omega-3 fatty acids content. Twelve Holsteins cows in mid lactation (150 ± 19 Days in milk) were placed on alfalfa based pasture and assigned into four treatment diets using a 4X4 Latin square design with 3 wk period. Treatment diets were: (1) control grain supplement (CONT); (2) control grain supplement containing 170g LSO (LSO1); (3) control grain supplement containing 340g LSO (LSO2) and (4) control grain supplement containing 510g LSO (LSO3). Grain supplements were offered at 7 kg/d twice daily. Additional 100 g/d of algae, divided evenly between the two feeding times, were added to every treatment diet. Milk samples were collected during the last three days of each period and analyzed for chemical and fatty acids composition. Treatment diets had no effect on milk production (18.93, 18.50, 19.60 and 19.10 kg/d for treatment diets 1 to 4, respectively), milk fat percentages (3.23, 3.44, 3.35 and 3.27) and milk protein percentages (3.03, 3.19, 3.12 and 3.08). Milk cis-9, trans-11 CLA (1.12, 1.18, 1.39, and 1.65 g/100g fatty acids for treatment diets 1 to 4, respectively), vaccenic acid (VA, trans-11 C18:1; 3.39, 3.62, 4.25, and 4.89 g/100g fatty acids), and total omega-3 fatty acids (0.86, 1.09, 1.26, and 1.25 g/100g fatty acids) concentrations were linearly increased (P
