This book was released on 2004 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern has been expressed by commercial fishermen that seismic surveys may affect the health and/or behaviour of snow crab. This study examines the effects of seismic survey air gun noise on snow crab & snow crab catches. The study investigated a number of health, behavioural, & reproductive variables before, during, & after seismic shooting in a preliminary attempt to assess potential effects on physical, biochemical, or activity patterns in subject crabs. The study site was Conception Bay, Newfoundland, an area considered to be typical prime crab grounds. Fishing experiments were conducted in a controlled manner using standard & modified crab traps, with seven sets prior to shooting and six afterward. Crab movement & behaviour after exposure to air gun shots was monitored for caged crabs by video camera and for transmitter-tagged crabs by hydrophones. Caged crabs were also exposed to air gun shots at various depths and were sampled to assess potential indicators of stress & physical damage, in comparison to control crabs not exposed to shots. An important component of that study was to determine if lethal effects occurred three months after exposure. Results of this research are presented & discussed and direct effects on crab physiology are summarized.

Download or read book The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life II written by Arthur N. Popper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meeting of Aquatic Noise 2013 will introduce participants to the most recent research data, regulatory issues and thinking about effects of man-made noise and will foster critical cross-disciplinary discussion between the participants. Emphasis will be on the cross-fertilization of ideas and findings across species and noise sources. As with its predecessor, The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life: 3rd International Conference will encourage discussion of the impact of underwater sound, its regulation and mitigation of its effects. With over 100 contributions from leading researchers, a wide range of sources of underwater sound will be considered.

Download or read book Pilot Study on the Effects of Seismic Air Gun Noise on Lobster (Homarus Americanus) written by J. F. Payne and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lobster is one of the most commercially important species in Atlantic Canada and it is important to have some knowledge on whether seismic surveys may pose a risk to lobster populations. Noted in this regard is the mounting interest with respect to seismic surveys in the relatively shallow waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence where has extensive and rich lobster grounds. The basic thrust of the studies were to explore for changes in various biological endpoints and identify those which might warrant further assessment in a more comprehensive manner.--Document.

Book Synopsis Threats to the Arctic by : Scott Elias
Download or read book Threats to the Arctic written by Scott Elias and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Threats to the Arctic discusses all the current threats to this fragile region, emphasizing the interconnections between many environmental impacts, as well as the teleconnections between events already emerging in the Arctic (ocean circulation changes, melting of sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets) and other parts of the world. The book's aim is to inform readers about the impending, sometimes irreversible changes coming to the Arctic. University students, environmental engineers, policymakers and sociologists with an interest in the role of the Arctic in global change will benefit from the book's unique perspective. As this remote, inhospitable part of the world that few people will ever visit provides amazing insights, we can no longer have an 'out of sight – out of mind' approach to the environmental upheavals taking place in the Arctic. - Provides the most up-to-date information on this rapidly changing, critical part of the world - Offers a holistic understanding of the interconnections between global environmental changes and impacts in the Arctic - Examines fact-based pressure on politics and industry to preserve Arctic biota and environments

Book Synopsis Animal Communication and Noise by : Henrik Brumm
Download or read book Animal Communication and Noise written by Henrik Brumm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of animal communication has led to significant progress in our general understanding of motor and sensory systems, evolution, and speciation. However, one often neglected aspect is that signal exchange in every modality is constrained by noise, be it in the transmission channel or in the nervous system. This book analyses whether and how animals can cope with such constraints, and explores the implications that noise has for our understanding of animal communication. It is written by leading biologists working on different taxa including insects, fish, amphibians, lizards, birds, and mammals. In addition to this broad taxonomic approach, the chapters also cover a wide array of research disciplines: from the mechanisms of signal production and perception, to the behavioural ecology of signalling, the evolution of animal communication, and conservation issues. This volume promotes the integration of the knowledge gained by the diverse approaches to the study of animal communication and, at the same time, highlights particularly interesting fields of current and future research.
Book Synopsis ASA S3/SC1.4 TR-2014 Sound Exposure Guidelines for Fishes and Sea Turtles: A Technical Report prepared by ANSI-Accredited Standards Committee S3/SC1 and registered with ANSI by : Arthur N. Popper
Download or read book ASA S3/SC1.4 TR-2014 Sound Exposure Guidelines for Fishes and Sea Turtles: A Technical Report prepared by ANSI-Accredited Standards Committee S3/SC1 and registered with ANSI written by Arthur N. Popper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Technical Report presents the outcome of a Working Group that was established to determine broadly applicable sound exposure guidelines for fishes and sea turtles. After consideration of the diversity of fish and sea turtles, guidelines were developed for broad groups of animals, defined by the way they detect sound. Different sound sources were considered in terms of their acoustic characteristics and appropriate metrics defined for measurement of the received levels. The resultant sound exposure guidelines are presented in a set of tables. In some cases numerical guidelines are provided, expressed in appropriate metrics. When there were insufficient data to support numerical values, the relative likelihood of effects occurring was evaluated, although the actual likelihood of effects depends on the received level. These sound exposure guidelines, which are based on the best scientific information at the time of writing, should be treated as interim. The expectation is that with more research the guidelines can be refined and more cells in the tables completed. Recommendations are put forward defining the research requirements of highest priority for extending these interim exposure guidelines.
