Book excerpt: This paper reviews and discusses recent experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies of plasma-wall interaction in a weakly collisional magnetized plasma bounded with channel walls made from different materials. A lowpressure ExB plasma discharge of the Hall thruster was used to characterize the electron current across the magnetic field and its dependence on the applied voltage and electron-induced secondary electron emission (SEE) from the channel wall. The presence of a depleted, anisotropic electron energy distribution function with beams of secondary electrons was predicted to explain the enhancement of the electron cross-field current observed in experiments. Without the SEE, the electron crossfield transport can be reduced from anomalously high to nearly classical collisional level. The suppression of SEE was achieved using an engineered carbon velvet material for the channel walls. Both theoretically and experimentally, it is shown that the electron emission from the walls can limit the maximum achievable electric field in the magnetized plasma. With nonemitting walls, the maximum electric field in the thruster can approach a fundamental limit for a quasineutral plasma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics and Applications of Secondary Electron Emission provides a survey of the physics and applications of secondary electron emission. It is part of a series of monographs that aim to report on research carried out in electronics and applied physics. The monographs are written by specialists in their own subjects. Wherever it is practical the monographs will be kept short in length to enable all those interested in electronics to find the essentials necessary for their work in a condensed and concentrated form. The book begins with a discussion of secondary electrons. Separate chapters cover methods for measuring secondary electron emission; numerical results on the secondary electron emission yield of both metals and metal compounds; the influence of externally adsorbed foreign atoms and ions on secondary electron emission; and the mechanism of secondary electron emission. The final three chapters deal with the application side. These include the applications of electron multiplication; the elimination of disturbing effects due to secondary electrons; and ""storage"" devices in which information on electrical charges is written on an insulating surface, often by making use of secondary electron emission.

Book excerpt: Secondary electron emission is an important consideration in radiation hardening of electronics. Basic information on this phenomenon, its influence, and the factors that affect its magnitude are required. Space -charge effects on the low-energy, secondary-electron emission currents flowing within any evacuated, two-electrode, plane-parallel system bombarded by KeV or MeV electrons or photons are treated in this report. The secondary emission from each irradiated electrode is assumed to be representable by a Maxwellian distribution, as is done in thermionic electron emission. This permits the complete analytical solution for the thermionic problem to be carried over in its entirety to the secondary case. The principal objective is to determine the net current density between the electrodes J sub c, given the saturation current density J sub s, or vice-versa, under known geometrical and electrical conditions. It is found that d(2) J sub o, where d is the electrode separation, is a useful parameter for characterizing space-charge effects in a parallel-plate geometry system. Generalized graphs employing this parameter are presented so that the results derived here can be readily applied to cases of interest; they permit the determination of threshold voltage conditions for space-charge limitation and partial retardation effects in a diode configuration. Other graphs show the variation of d(2) J sub c with applied voltage. These theoretical predictions are compared to data derived from some AFCRL experiments, in which foil electrodes of aluminum, tantalum and gold were irradiated by 60Co gamma-rays and 10 MeV electrons. Book excerpt: The spatial distributions and correlation of stochastic energy deposition events produced in macromolecular volumes by a radiation field are of increasing importance in understanding radiation effects in biological materials. Studies of radiation action involving cell inactivation and mutation as well as single- and double-strand breaks in DNA indicate that energy deposition in volumes as small as nanometer dimensions may be required for interpretation. Correlation of spatial and temporal energy deposition events may be particularly important where the radiation effects result from pairing of sublesions within a specified volume. These examples demonstrate a clear need for knowledge of the energy concentrations randomly deposited in very small volumes in and near the paths of charged particles. Because direct measurement of energy deposition in such small sites is not technically feasible, it is necessary to develop mathematical models capable of calculating the desired quantities. Realistic computational methods, however, require a comprehensive data base of basic interaction cross sections. This data base must include interaction probabilities for the primary and all secondary radiation products. Of particular interest are the cross sections for the production of secondary electrons in primary ionizing events. In the present work, we will consider the extent to which this data base has developed regarding the interaction of fast charged particles with media of biological interest.
