Download or read book Radiative Heat Transfer in Turbulent Combustion Systems written by Michael F. Modest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction reviews why combustion and radiation are important, as well as the technical challenges posed by radiation. Emphasis is on interactions among turbulence, chemistry and radiation (turbulence-chemistry-radiation interactions – TCRI) in Reynolds-averaged and large-eddy simulations. Subsequent chapters cover: chemically reacting turbulent flows; radiation properties, Reynolds transport equation (RTE) solution methods, and TCRI; radiation effects in laminar flames; TCRI in turbulent flames; and high-pressure combustion systems. This Brief presents integrated approach that includes radiation at the outset, rather than as an afterthought. It stands as the most recent developments in physical modeling, numerical algorithms, and applications collected in one monograph.

Download or read book Heat and Mass Transfer in Gasoline and Diesel Engines written by Dudley Brian Spalding and published by Core/Mechanical. This book was released on 1989 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors explain that the classical formulae and techniques for predicting heat flow do not apply to the unique conditions found in reciprocating engines. They warn the reader--presumed to be aspiring designers of more efficient and less polluting engines--that although these papers, from every country where engineering is practiced, contain nearly all the available knowledge on the subject, no definitive answers emerge, no breakthroughs loom around the next equation. The topics include the transfer of engine heat and of external heat, numerical flow simulation, applications and devices, ignition and quenching, and measurement techniques. This book was released on 1986 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the reported research was to investigate the relationship of radiation heat transfer to the in-cylinder species distribution in direct injection-type diesel engine combustion. In order to implement this objective, both the experimental and computational methods were employed during the course of the study. In the experiment, in order to obtain the in-cylinder species distribution at successive engine crank angles, a rapid sampling valve has been used on a laboratory-built single cylinder direct injection-type diesel engine. The engine for the data acquisiton was constructed basically by combining a reciprocating system of an ASTM gasoline engine and a newly constructed engine cylinder head. We encountered a series of problems in the engine requiring replacement of engine components. At the end, the engine was regarded unable to meet the need of operating for an extended period of time for data gathering. Consequently, it was decided to use a new single cylinder engine. In the computational work, a radiation heat transfer model was developed to predict spectral radiation heat transfer through the engine combustion chamber wall for given in-cylinder species distributions. The discovery of a new integral function, a new exact solution of blackbody functions, a new empirical equation of adiabatic flame temperature of fuel/air systems, an analytical solution of equation of radiation functions, a parametric analysis of diesel radiation heat transfer, etc. are reported.
Book Synopsis An Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Radiation Heat Transfer in Combustor Having Jet Flames by : K. T. Rhee
Download or read book An Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Radiation Heat Transfer in Combustor Having Jet Flames written by K. T. Rhee and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new computational method is introduced for radiation heat transfer analysis in combustion chambers containing jet flame plumes. The governing equation of radiation heat flux incident over the surface of the combustor is analytically derived. The governing equation is solved numerically by using the Gaussian integration method. The methodology has been applied to diesel combustion in such a way that the effect of various engine parameters on its radiation heat transfer is evaluated.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High pressure fuel injection is a crucial process that impacts the subsequent steps of mixture preparation, ignition and combustion in diesel or gasoline direct injection engines. Experimental studies have revealed the mixing-controlled and local phase equilibrium characteristics of liquid vaporization in high injection pressure engine sprays. In this study an Equilibrium Phase (EP) spray model is explored. The model is developed based on jet theory and the phase equilibrium assumption, without modeling drop breakup, collision and finite-rate interfacial vaporization processes. The model development is carried out in an advanced version of KIVA-3vr2. The presently proposed EP spray model is validated extensively in simulations of the ECN Spray A, and in an optical diesel engine and in DISI gasoline sprays. The predictions of liquid/vapor penetration, fuel mass fraction distribution, heat release rate and emission formation are in good agreement with experimental data. In addition, good computational efficiency and grid-independency are also seen with the present EP model. The examined operating conditions cover wide ranges that are relevant to IC engines, which are 700-1400 K, 7.6-22.8 kg/m3 for diesel sprays, and 500-900 K, 3-9 kg/m3 for gasoline DISI sprays, respectively. Thermal radiation is another topic of interest in this work since it accounts for an important mechanism of heat transfer in engine combustion. The role of thermal radiation in engine combustion is investigated by implementing the Discrete Ordinate Method (DOM) model and the narrowband model into CFD code together with the EP spray model. Engine simulation results show that radiative heat loss accounts for about 9-18% of the total wall heat loss for operating loads from 4 to 14.5 bar gIMEP. A strong correlation is found between the global equivalence ratio and the fraction of radiative heat loss to total wall heat loss, which even applies in low temperature combustion modes. The participating gases of CO2, H2O and CO are found to be the dominant source of thermal radiation due to their abundancy in high temperature regions. Also, the cooling effect of thermal radiation is shown to have significant impact on the prediction of soot emissions.
