Book excerpt: A CLR single cylinder diesel engine is used to determine the effect of air content in the emulsified fuel on the performance, exhaust emissions and ignition delay of diesel engines. The experiments were conducted using diesel fuel no. 2 and JP-4 as baseline fuels and emulsions containing 15%, 30% and 45% water by volume. The air charge temperature was varied from 88 F to 302 F. The effects associated with use of the emulsions on performance, ignition delay and exhaust emissions were determined by making detailed measurements of fuel consumption, engine operating parameters and exhaust emissions. The results showed that slight improvement in Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) was observed when emulsions with low water content were used at high speeds. For high water content emulsions, the BSFC increased. Heating the intake air increased the BSFC at high engine loads and slightly improved it at low engine loads. While the ignition delay was found to increase with the increase of the water percentage in the emulsion, preheating the air charge was effective in reducing it. Although, NO sub x and soot formation were reduced effectively with the increase of water content in the emulsion, preheating the air charge adversely affected NO sub x and soot emissions. While CO and VHC emissions increased with the increase of the water content in the emulsion, increasing the intake air temperature slightly reduced carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons at low loads. However, diesel engines are among the main contributors to emissions into the air, especially particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). PM is one of the major pollutants emitted by diesel engines and has adverse effects on human health. However, not many studies have been conducted on the PM concentration and PM morphological and size distribution on biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel, which produces less PM than diesel fuel, is preferred as an alternative source for diesel engines. Therefore, using palm oil methyl ester (POME) for diesel engines would be a more economical and sustainable solution. The objective of this research is to study the PM emissions characteristic from diesel engines fuelled with a diesel and POME blend. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to determine the aggregate fractal prefactor, spherule, and aggregate size distribution. A comparison between diesel and the POME blend was made in terms of PM characterization, which involves PM mass concentration, its components soluble organic fraction (SOF) and dry soot (DS), and its influence on PM morphology such as spherule and aggregate correlation. Combustion characteristics such as in-cylinder pressure and rate of heat release of the engine as well as gaseous emissions were also observed at different operating engine loads. The results show that PM emissions of B100 are lower than those of diesel fuel owing to the oxygen content of POME. Observations of images on PM morphology showed a chainlike agglomeration, which is an extremely small non-uniform nanostructure. Simultaneously, the aggregate size distribution shifted to a smaller diameter as the blending ratio of POME in the fuel increased. The observation of in-cylinder pressure showed that the increment of pressure with the increasing POME blend as well as the increasing engine load is due to high cetane number for B100 that led to a shorten ignition delay. The engine brake thermal efficiency between the POME blend and mineral diesel was comparable. Furthermore, B100 fuels showed lower engine power at higher brake-specific fuel consumption compared to other tested fuels. In terms of gaseous emissions, increasing POME blends led to an increase in CO2 and NOx while decreasing CO emission. Meanwhile, as the engine load increased, CO2, NOx and CO also continued to increase. The effect of the POME blend on the PM-NOx trade-off observation showed that B100 simultaneously increased the NOx and decreased the PM emission. Both the wavelet analysis and coefficient of variation revealed that increasing the POME ratio provided a noticeable effect on increasing the engine cycle-to-cycle variations. It can be concluded that POME creates lower PM concentration while giving some negative feedback to NOx and resulting in smaller particle size. Moreover, the findings reveal that by having the wavelet analysis, one can predict the behavior of the PM emissions and subsequently further research helps to reduce them effectively and economically.

Biodiesel, a biofuel that is produced from chemically mixing animal fat, vegetable oils, or recycled restaurant grease with alcohol and catalyst, is gaining popularity in recent years as a substitute for petroleum diesel. Ninety percent (90%) of U.S. biodiesel industry makes use of soybean oil as its feedstock. However, soybean oil alone cannot meet such a huge demand on biofuel production. Hence, it is important to identify and get more information about other feedstocks, specifically on its effects on the performance and exhaust emissions of diesel engines. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance and emissions of two diesel engines operating on different biodiesel fuels (i.e. canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, and chicken fat) and compare them to the performance and emissions when the engine is operated on soybean oil-based biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel. Results indicated that an engine operating on biodiesel generates a little less power and torque at any given speed than one running on diesel. Such power and torque loss were attributed to the biodiesel's lower energy content. The lower heating value (energy content) of biodiesel can be reflected in the specific fuel consumption, i.e., to generate the same power, more biodiesel is needed. The reduction in torque and power of less than 10% indicates that in some cases biodiesel has better combustion than diesel. Unfortunately, the high efficiency of combustion may give rise to increased combustion temperature which may lead to higher exhaust emissions. The gradual decrease in the total hydrocarbon and CO2 emissions, as blends were increased from B20 to B100, was also found to be an indication of better combustion using biodiesel fuels than petroleum diesel. However, NOx emissions were higher, predominantly at low speeds for most biodiesel and blends and therefore may require some additives or engine modifications/or adjustments to equalize the NOx emissions of diesel. Other emissions particularly SO2 were lower than standards require.

Accordingly, many research have been done to find alternative fuels that are clean and efficient. In this study, waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel has been used as an alternative source for diesel engine which produces lower PM than diesel fuel. The emission of PM and gaseous emission (carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO) and NOx) has been collected from single cylinder diesel engine fuelled with diesel and WCO biodiesel blends (B5, B10 B20 and B100) at five different engine speed (1200 rpm, 1500 rpm, 1800 rpm, 2100 rpm and 2400 rpm) with constant load of 20 Nm. The comparison between diesel and WCO biodiesel blends has been made in terms of PM characterization which is PM mass concentration, its component ( soluble organic fraction (SOF) and soot) and its influence on PM formation, PM morphology and PM size distribution. In addition, combustion characteristic which is in-cylinder pressure of the engine as well as exhaust temperature also has been observed. The results show PM emission of B100 is lower than diesel fuel with variation of 5.56% to 21.82 % . This is due to oxygen content contained in B100. As for SOF concentration, blended fuels B10, B20, and B100 have higher SOF value (3.23 % to 82.36 % ) compared to diesel fuel at moderate and high engine speed. Meanwhile, soot concentration for blended fuels B10, B20 and B100 is lower (10 % to 62.50 %. ) compared to diesel fuel Observation on PM morphology shows that the images is chain-like agglomeration which is extremely small non uniform nanostructure. As for the PM size distribution, the trend were similar for diesel and WCO biodiesel blends. The size distribution of diesel fuel and WCO biodiesel blends were shifted to the larger size as the engine speed is increase d. Simultaneously, the size distribution is shifted to the smaller PM diameter as blending ratio of WCO biodiesel in the fuel blend is increase. The observation of in-cylinder pressure shows uncertain trend with the WCO biodiesel ratio in the fuel blend while decreasing with the increasing engine speed due to the prolong ignition delay period. At the same time, WCO biodiesel blends gives higher value of exhaust temperature which is 1.49 % compared to diesel fuel and it increases as the engine speed increase. In terms of gaseous emission, increasing engine speed increased the CO, CO2, NOx and NO emission while decrease the O2emission. The effect of WCO biodiesel blends on the gaseous emission shows uncertain trend while PM-NOx trade off observation showsB100 simultaneously decrease both NOx and PM emission at the same time. This study shows that the PM and gaseous emission as well as combustion characteristic of the WCO biodiesel are comparable with diesel fuel thus WCO biodiesel has potential as an alternative fuel to be used in diesel in the future.
