Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

Book excerpt: This report deals with the relationship of elements of microstructure to the fracture characteristics of a group of commercially produced steels, heat-treated to ultra-high strength levels. The microstructures were characterized in terms of optical microscopy, electron diffraction, and electron fractography. Fractographic studies were made of fractured surfaces broken in impact at +25 and -196 C as a function of tempering temperature, in slow bending at ambient temperature, in a modified bend test in which slow and fast propagation stages were effected, and on surfaces produced in tensile fractures. The fracture characteristics were studied by means of an instrumented bend test and in terms of the plastic instability generated in the torsion test. The instrumented bend test yielded data on criteria for the onset of slow crack propagation and for the onset of rapid propagation, including the effect of the total stored energy in the system. Plastic instability in torsion was studied as a function of specimen section size in AISI 4340 steel. A 250,000 psi yield strength Maraging steel was studied in a standard size test bar. (Author).

Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Pathbreaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment and corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. This thesis report will attempt to elaborate upon the specific influence of composition, microstructure, and secondary processing techniques on both the static (uni-axial tensile) and dynamic (impact) properties of the four high strength steels AerMet®100, PremoMet(TM)290, 300M and Tenax(TM) 310. The steels were manufactured and marketed for commercial use by CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY, Inc (Reading, PA, USA). The specific heat treatment given to the candidate steels determines its microstructure and resultant mechanical properties spanning both static and dynamic. Test specimens of the steels were precision machined and conformed to standards specified and prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) for both tensile tests and Charpy V-Notch impact tests. Based on similarity of the secondary processing technique the candidate specialty steels were divided into two groups: (i) AerMet®100 and PremoMet(TM)290, (ii) 300M and Tenax(TM)310. The impact toughness response and resultant fracture behavior of the steels were studied at different temperatures ranging from -180°C to +170°C. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature and the final fracture behavior of the candidate steel was established at both the macroscopic and fine microscopic levels. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing the impact toughness, quasi static deformation and final fracture behavior of each of the chosen high strength steels will be elaborated upon in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of composition, intrinsic microstructural effects, and nature of loading.

Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the Automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Path breaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment, corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. In this dissertation document the results of a study aimed at the influence of alloy chemistry, processing and influence of the quasi static and fatigue behavior of seven alloy steels is discussed. The microstructure of the as-received steel was examined and characterized for the nature and morphology of the grains and the presence of other intrinsic features in the microstructure. The tensile, cyclic fatigue and bending fatigue tests were done on a fully automated closed-loop servo-hydraulic test machine at room temperature. The failed samples of high strength steels were examined in a scanning electron microscope for understanding the fracture behavior, especially the nature of loading be it quasi static, cyclic fatigue or bending fatigue. The quasi static and cyclic fatigue fracture behavior of the steels examined coupled with various factors contributing to failure are briefly discussed in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of intrinsic microstructural effects, nature of loading, and stress (load)-deformation-microstructural interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model has been used to relate the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels to their microstructure. The cleavage fracture toughness of low-alloy steels depends upon three metallurgical parameters: the microscopic cleavage strength, the yield strength, and the effective root radius. Variations in fracture toughness with microstructure can be explained through the effect of the microstructure on these parameters. The major objective of this investigation has been the study of the effect of microstructural variables on these parameters, and hence the effect of microstructure on fracture toughness. The theoretical model for the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels can be successfully applied provided the assumptions are not strongly violated. This requires low microscopic cleavage strength/yield strength ratio values and low work-hardening rates. Lower temperatures and higher strain rates both favor these conditions. (Modified author abstract).

This book was released on 1993 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of inclusion distributions and fine scale microstructure on the fracture toughness and fracture processes of ultra high strength steels have been investigated. The inclusion distributions vary in the sulfide type and the sulfide types considered were MnS, CrS, La2O2S and Ti2CS. The MnS and CrS particles are smaller and more closely spaced than particles of La2O2S. Resistance to void nucleation is the same if the sulfur is gettered as CrS, MnS or La2O2S. The particles of Ti2CS are smaller and much more resistant to void nucleation than the other sulfide types. The fine scale microstructures were those obtained for the as-quenched, tempered at 425 deg C and tempered at 510 deg C conditions for HY180 and AF1410 steels. The topics then addressed are (a) effect of fine scale microstructure and inclusion distributions on blunting behavior, (b) the role of inclusion spacing at constant inclusion volume fraction on fracture toughness of three fine scale microstructures for HY 180 steel, (c) effect of gettering sulfur as Ti2CS on the fracture toughness of three fine scale microstructures of HY180 steel, (d) morphology of Ti2CS particles, (e) effect of gettering sulfur as Ti2CS on the fracture toughness of AF1410 steel tempered at 510 deg C, and (f) conclusions regarding improving toughness by gettering sulfur as Ti2CS.
