Book excerpt: The purpose of this research program is to verify experimentally the theoretical prediction for the effect of the high load on the fatigue behavior of unnotched composite laminates. A three-parameter fatigue and residual strength degradation model has been used to derive the number of load cycles a specimen can survive and the statistical distributions of the fatigue life and the residual strength after the specimen has survived an initial high load or periodic high loads. One set of the static ultimate strength data and one set of the fatigue scan data were generated to determine the three-parameter values appearing in the theoretical model.

Book excerpt: The effect of load sequence on the fatigue behavior of composite materials is contributed by (1) the difference in residual strength when fatigue fracture occurs, referred to as the boundary effect, and (2) the material memory effect with respect to previously experienced loads. A theoretical fatigue model previously developed by the authors is generalized herein to include the memory effect. The present model permits isolation of the memory effect from the boundary effect, thus the extent of the memory effect can be identified using residual strength test results under dual-level fatigue loadings. An experimental test program using graphite/epoxy [±35]2s laminates under high-low and low-high load sequences has been conducted to generate statistical residual strength data. It is shown that the material memory effect does exist for Gr/E [±35]2s laminates, as predicted by the model. The correlation between the test results and the theoretical predictions of the median residual strength and the expected percentage of fatigue failures under dual loading is very good. However, the statistical dispersion of the residual strength test results is much smaller than that of the static ultimate strength and that predicted by the model.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses an experimental program that addressed the effect of low-velocity impact damage on the fatigue behavior of two laminates, fabricated from AS/3501-6 graphite/epoxy unidirectional tapes, with lay-ups representative of high-performance fighter aircraft wing skin lay-ups. Prior to testing, specimens from these laminates were subjected to one of two types of low-velocity impact damage. The first type was created using a blunt-tipped (1.6-cm tip diameter) impactor, and the impact energy was chosen to induce internal damage, approximately 5 cm in diameter, with no visible sign of damage on the outer surfaces. The second type of damage was created using a sharp (tetrahedral-tipped) impactor, with visible signs of damage on the impacted and opposite surfaces. Subsequent to introducing low-velocity impact damage, test specimens were subjected to static and constant amplitude fatigue loading. In the presence of compressive loads, lateral knife-edge supports were placed near the outer edge, for specimen stability, permitting unconstrained delamination growth elsewhere. Static tension and compression tests were conducted initially, and significant strength reductions due to the impact damages were measured. Fatigue load amplitudes were chosen to be fractions, S, of the static strengths. The behavior of impact-damaged specimens was investigated under tension-tension (R ? 0), tension-compression (R = -1), and compression-compression (R -> -?) fatigue loads. During fatigue, the growth in the impact damage was monitored by means of ultrasonic pulse-echo records. Fatigue life data for the various laminate-damage-loading combinations were obtained in the form of S-N curves. Interesting damage growth patterns were observed, and the criticality of each type of impact damage on the fatigue behavior of the tested laminates was assessed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of multidirectional graphite-epoxy laminates is examined and analyzed in terms of the single lamina behavior. The nonlinear viscoelastic moduli of the epoxy matrix are changed with temperature and thus the characteristics of the laminae are altered. As a result, the static and fatigue strengths of a laminate are changed due to the redistribution of the stress field in the laminate and the weakening effect of temperature on the matrix. The fatigue behavior of a single lamina is characterized by its static strength and its "fatigue function" that expresses the degradation in the strength of the lamina due to cyclic loading. The effect of temperature is introduced through the use of "shifting factors" for both the static strength and the "fatigue function." The laminate strength is predicted by considering the cyclic stress field in each lamina, the interlaminar stresses, and the experimentally determined shifting factors. The first failure of a lamina in a laminate is examined first in terms of stress redistribution and second in terms of total failure and final laminate fracture. The analytically determined results are compared with the actual fatigue behavior of many T300/5208 graphite-epoxy composite laminates. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The temperature "shifting factors" enable one to predict long-term behavior at some temperature from short-time testing at elevated temperatures.

Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of a notched, graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) laminate subjected to predominantly compressive loading was explored in a series of constant amplitude and transport wing spectrum tests. Results of these tests indicated that (1) the amount of local (near the notch) buckling allowed in the tests significantly affected fatigue life; (2) spectrum truncation of either the high- or low-load end of the spectrum produced lives greater than those obtained in the baseline, complete-spectrum test, but life was much more sensitive to truncations at the high-load end; and (3) the Palmgren-Miner linear cumulative damage theory always predicted lives much longer than the actual spectrum loading test lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual strength of the impact-damaged laminates can be predicted using an analytical model. Both the power law and the wearout models appear to be useful in predicting the fatigue life of the composite laminates. However, because of the slope parameter, the wearout model appears to have a slight edge over the power law model, particularly at low fatigue life and higher applied stress. The strength degradation due to cyclic loading in notched laminates was found to be extremely small up to a million cycles. The residual strength of the fatigue-damaged laminates was found to increase (in proportion to the applied maximum stress with R = 0.1) after a million fatigue cycles. Impact loading followed by cyclic loading was found to be more damaging (in reducing the life of the laminate) than the reversed sequence of loading. The magnitude of the minimum projectile velocity causing catastrophic failure in the laminates tested was found as a function of the applied stress and the number of fatigue cycles.

Book excerpt: This report is Vol. I of a 2-part final report on the activities which were conducted under Contract No. F33615-81-3225. The general objective of this program was to investigate the precise nature of the damage events caused by cyclic (fatigue) loading of composite laminates that are directly related to fracture of those laminates, to develop a conceptual understanding of how those damage events reduce the residual strength of the laminates, and to determine how the collective damage condition following long-term cyclic loading precipitates the final fracture event. The program was conducted in four phases: (1) the development of fatigue damage during long-term cyclic loading was investigated in such a way that the damage events which occur quite late in the fatigue life of the material, just prior to fracture, were identified and characterized; (2) the special contribution and nature of fiber fracture was investigated; (3) the nature of the collective damage condition which precipitates the fracture event under long-term fatigue loading was investigated; (4) a philosophy of fracture in composite laminates following severe damage development due to cyclic loading was developed. A wide variety of destructive and nondestructive experimental evaluation schemes were used in the program, and several analytical efforts were conducted to support the experimental activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of load frequency on the fatigue behavior of notched [±45°]2s laminated graphite/epoxy composites are investigated. Experimental results are obtained using four frequencies at three load levels. Temperature rises near the center hole are also measured. It is found that when temperature increase during the fatigue test is small, fatigue life increases as the load frequency increases. However, an increase in the near hole temperature results in a reduction in fatigue life. A theoretical model based upon crack propagation in viscoelastic media is presented. The model is modified to account for the temperature effect.
