Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to explore how weather risk affects the value of nitrogen fertilizer use and improved seed variety adoption to Sub-Saharan African (SSA) maize farmers. It contributes to the literature by providing additional broad support for the hypothesis that low rates of fertilizer use and improved seed variety adoption can be attributed to the fact that the SSA landscape is heterogeneous, so fertilizer and improved seed are not always advantageous, especially when considering the potentially high cost to farmers of obtaining fertilizer and improved seed. The analysis finds a synergy between nitrogen fertilizer and improve seed varieties. While the benefits of nitrogen tend to increase overtime without improved seed varieties and the benefits of improved seed varieties tend to decrease overtime without nitrogen, combining the two provides more sustained productivity benefits. Therefore, securing both nitrogen use and improved variety adoption is important for promoting sustained productivity increases across most of SSA. The research also contributes to the literature a methodology for calculating willingness to pay bounds that assess the importance of farmers’ risk tolerances as a barrier to fertilizer use or improved seed variety adoption.

Book excerpt: A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of seeding rate and spatial arrangement of vetch and fertilizer on yield and yield components of the associated crops. Application of fertilizer significantly affected the phenology of maize and vetch. Days to flowering of vetch was significantly affected by spatial arrangement, seeding rate and cropping system. Fertilizer significantly increased maize plant height by 19.6%, leaf area by 6.9%, leaf area index by 7.3%, ear length by 19.6%, thousand seed weight by 8.4%, seed ear-1 by 24.9%, dry matter by 24.9%, grain yield by 60.5% and harvest index by 13% and ear height by 15.7% over the unfertilized treatments. Application of fertilizer increased plant height of vetch by 6.4% and biomass yield by 25.4% over the unfertilized treatments and the highest seed rate (30kgha-1) increased plant height by 11%, biomass yield by 2.5% than 20kgha-1seed rate. More biomass yield of 76.6% and 116.4% for the 20 and 30kgha-1 seed rate, respectively, was obtained from sole than intercropped vetch. The productivity of intercropping was 46.7, 3.4 and 2.7% more in plots treated with fertilizer, double alternate row arrangement and seed rate of 30

Book excerpt: A field experiment was conducted at farmer’s field of Anandapur, Mangalpur VDC-3, Chitwan, Nepal during winter season from September 2006 to February 2007 to study the effects of nitrogen and plant population on maize. Fifteen treatment combinations consisting of five levels of nitrogen: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha and three levels of plant population; 55555 plants/ha (60 cm × 30 cm spacing), 66666 plants/ha (60 cm × 25 cm spacing) and 83333 plants/ha (60 cm × 20 cm spacing) were tested in factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. “Rampur Composite” variety of maize was planted on sandy silt loam and strongly acidic soil having medium in total nitrogen (0.123%), high in soil available phosphorous (77.56 kg/ha) and low in soil available potassium (23.25 kg/ha). The research findings revealed that each level of nitrogen significantly increased grain yield upto 200 kg N/ha. The grain yield (6514.48 kg/ha) obtained under 200 kg N/ha was significantly higher than that of 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha. The percent increment in yield due to application of 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha was to the extent of 62.11, 104.74, 135.68 and 154.74%, respectively over control. Significant effect on grain yield due to different levels of plant population was observed. The grain yield (5113.46 kg/ha) obtained under 66666 plants/ha was statistically at par with that under 83333 plants/ha, but significantly superior over that under 55555 plants/ha. The interaction between different nitrogen levels and plant densities on grain yield showed that the highest grain yield (6925.79 kg/ha) was obtained under treatment of 200 kg N/ha + 66666 plants/ha. The yield attributes namely number of cobs/plant, cob length, cob diameter, number of grain rows/cob and 1000 seed weight significantly increased with increasing N levels and decreasing plant population levels. The number of barren plants/ha decreased with increasing levels of N but increased with increasing levels of plant population. The net return (Rs. 42188.74/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (1.67) obtained under 200 kg N/ha were significantly highest than that obtained under other levels of nitrogen (150, 100, 50 and 0 kg N/ha). The plant population of 66666 plants/ha gave the highest net returns (Rs. 25812.28) which was 10.19 and 49.64% higher than that of 83333 plants/ha and 55555 plants/ha, respectively. The benefit: cost ratio (1.44) obtained under 66666 plants/ha was significantly higher than that of 55555 and 83333 plants/ha. The interaction between different nitrogen levels and plant densities on economics of maize production showed that significantly highest net return (Rs.48606.98) and B:C ratio (1.78) were under treatment of 200 kg N/ha + 66666 plants/ha. The highest grain yield and maximum profit were obtained when maize variety “Rampur Composite” was planted with 200 kg N/ha and plant population level of 66666 plants/ha (60 cm × 25 cm spacing).

Book excerpt: A field experiment consisting of three nitrogenous sources (FYM, Slurry and urea) under five levels (0,30,60,90 and 120 kg N/ha) was conducted on fodder maize and their residual effect were studied on chinese cabbage in the succeding season. Green yield of maize did not increase appreciably beyond 60 kg N/ha Neither of the three sources afected green yield and remained at par. With regard to dry matter yield a similar resuct was obtained. The yield atributes also improved upto 60 kg N/ha dose in maize. Studying residual effect it was revealed that there was increase in green yield by 18 and 22 per cent over control at 90 and 120 kg N/ha respectively. In case of dry matter the treatment effects were at par slurry application to maize showed the best performance in succeding season over FYM and urea. Growth parameters also increased in chinese cabbage by slurry application to maize quality parameters in maize were not influenced by either doses or sources of nitrogen. Residual effect of nitrogen sources did not show appreciable difference in crude protein production in chinese cabbage. Phosphorus uptake in maize was maximum with urea only phosphorus by FYM and slurry. Slurry was found to be a better source of soil amendment as compared to farm yard manure in succeding season.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 8.5, course: Agronomy, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to study the effect of integrated nutrient management on the growth and yield of kharif Maize and to work out the economics of different nutrient management treatments. As the chemical's fertilizers play an important role in plants life so that these chemicals should not be avoided completely as they are the potential sources of the high amount of nutrients in easily available forms. These fertilizers greatly affect enzymatic activities in the soil profile but poor management of the chemical fertilizers has a key role in lowering the yield productivity and deteriorate the soil health also. So, to achieve optimum crop production, there is a need to use the combination of organic sources, inorganic sources, bio-fertilizers. Maize (Zea mays L.) requires the nutrients i.e., macronutrients as well as micronutrients for obtaining the higher crop growth and yield. The micronutrients content in organic manure may be sufficient to meet the crop requirement but the low soil fertility is the major problem to maintain sustainability in production. The application of organic manure do not produce optimum yield due to low nutrient status but they play a direct role in plant growth by the mineralization they provide the essential nutrients which furthermore improves the physical and biological properties of the soil. The use of organic plays an important role in maintaining soil health due to the build-up of soil organic matter, beneficial microbes. "Biofertilizer" is a substance that contains living organisms. It promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant. These are not fertilizers because fertilizers directly increase soil fertility by adding nutrients. They add nutrients through the natural processes of fixing atmospheric nitrogen, solubilizing phosphorus, and stimulating
