Book excerpt: Jens Benthien introduces the interested beginner to the world of keeping and breeding Tiger Salamanders in the terrarium, but also provides some useful pointers and suggestions for the more advanced terrarium keeper. While Tiger Salamanders are well suited to the beginner in keeping amphibians, it is also of interest to the more advanced enthusiast, in particular because it poses some challenges with regard to propagating it. Following an overview of the genus, the distribution, and the ecology of Tiger Salamanders in the wild, the book with its appr. 80 color photographs details how to house these animals according to their biological needs, how to properly feed and care for them, and what is required to propagate the representatives of the North American Tiger Salamanders of the genus Ambystoma. Their ability to optionally remain and become sexually mature at their larval stage (neoteny), the problem of hybridizing, and the possible emergence of color anomalies are briefly discussed as well.

Book excerpt: Generously illustrated, this essential handbook for herpetologists, ecologists, and naturalists features comprehensive keys to eggs, embryos, salamander larvae, and tadpoles; species accounts; a glossary of terms; and an extensive bibliography. The taxonomic accounts include a summarization of the morphology and basic natural history, as well as an introduction to published information for each species. Tadpole mouthparts exhibit major characteristics used in identifications, and the book includes illustrations for a number of species. Color photographs of larvae of many species are also presented. Handbook of Larval Amphibians of the United States and Canada, written by the foremost experts on larval amphibians, is the first guide of its kind and will transform the fieldwork of scientists and fish and wildlife professionals.

Book excerpt: Developmental Instability: Its Origins and Evolutionary Implications is a collection of papers and transcribed discussions from a conference held in Tempe, Arizona in June 1993. The papers represent a wide range of contributions, from the empirical to the theoretical, and include methods for measuring developmental instability across a variety of taxa and traits. This volume presents contrasting views on how to assess developmental instability as well as on the relationship of instability to genotypic factors, environmental factors and the action of natural and sexual selection. Readers will derive a working knowledge of the best way to assess developmental instability and will be able to design future work in an authoritative way.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive synthesis on development and evolution: it applies to all aspects of development, at all levels of organization and in all organisms, taking advantage of modern findings on behavior, genetics, endocrinology, molecular biology, evolutionary theory and phylogenetics to show the connections between developmental mechanisms and evolutionary change. This book solves key problems that have impeded a definitive synthesis in the past. It uses new concepts and specific examples to show how to relate environmentally sensitive development to the genetic theory of adaptive evolution and to explain major patterns of change. In this book development includes not only embryology and the ontogeny of morphology, sometimes portrayed inadequately as governed by "regulatory genes," but also behavioral development and physiological adaptation, where plasticity is mediated by genetically complex mechanisms like hormones and learning. The book shows how the universal qualities of phenotypes--modular organization and plasticity--facilitate both integration and change. Here you will learn why it is wrong to describe organisms as genetically programmed; why environmental induction is likely to be more important in evolution than random mutation; and why it is crucial to consider both selection and developmental mechanism in explanations of adaptive evolution. This book satisfies the need for a truly general book on development, plasticity and evolution that applies to living organisms in all of their life stages and environments. Using an immense compendium of examples on many kinds of organisms, from viruses and bacteria to higher plants and animals, it shows how the phenotype is reorganized during evolution to produce novelties, and how alternative phenotypes occupy a pivotal role as a phase of evolution that fosters diversification and speeds change. The arguments of this book call for a new view of the major themes of evolutionary biology, as shown in chapters on gradualism, homology, environmental induction, speciation, radiation, macroevolution, punctuation, and the maintenance of sex. No other treatment of development and evolution since Darwin's offers such a comprehensive and critical discussion of the relevant issues. Developmental Plasticity and Evolution is designed for biologists interested in the development and evolution of behavior, life-history patterns, ecology, physiology, morphology and speciation. It will also appeal to evolutionary paleontologists, anthropologists, psychologists, and teachers of general biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This benchmark volume documents in comprehensive detail a major environmental crisis: rapidly declining amphibian populations and the disturbing developmental problems that are increasingly prevalent within many amphibian species. Horror stories on this topic have been featured in the scientific and popular press over the past fifteen years, invariably asking what amphibian declines are telling us about the state of the environment. Are declines harbingers of devastated ecosystems or simply weird reflections of a peculiar amphibian world? This compendium—presenting new data, reviews of current literature, and comprehensive species accounts—reinforces what scientists have begun to suspect, that amphibians are a lens through which the state of the environment can be viewed more clearly. And, that the view is alarming and presages serious concerns for all life, including that of our own species. The first part of this work consists of more than fifty essays covering topics from the causes of declines to conservation, surveys and monitoring, and education. The second part consists of species accounts describing the life history and natural history of every known amphibian species in the United States.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the recent apparent world-wide decline in amphibians, the current status of amphibian populations in the Western United States warrants serious attention. The tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum, is of particular concern since it is Colorado's only salamander species. A. tigrinum is most conspicuous in its larval stage in small bodies of water. The location of larval tiger salamander habitat in South Central Colorado (Alimosa, Chaffee, Custer, Fremont, and Gunnison Counties) was mapped, to better understand its geographic range. Analysis of sampling methods was also carried out, yielding improvements in the standard drop box method, as well as a new observational method for determining larval salamander density in small bodies of water. The new observational method is a replicable, easy, and inexpensive way to estimate larval tiger salamander density and determine population trends. Observations should occur at midday since larval tiger salamanders follow a daily cycle of activity that shows maximum activity around this hour. In the current study, the observational method proved to be comparable or superior to the drop box method in predicting larval densities (as determined by seining). The observational method is ideal for a long term monitoring program, and could yield information that is critical to conservation efforts.
