Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of composite explosives are being studied as a function of mechanical confinement and three techniques for confinement were used. These are: (a) a constant confining pressure obtained by oil immersion, (b) radial confinement of a cylindrical sample by a thick walled steel cylinder that surrounds the sample (negligible radial strain), and (c) radial confinement of thin wafers by the platen-sample friction. while many energetic materials fail by crack growth when unconfined (significant surface area free of stress), with all of these forms of confinement, they appear to fail by yield and plastic flow. For crystalline explosives (e.g., TNT and Composition B), the yield strength and the modulus are independent of confining pressure so that useful results can be easily obtained by use of the steel cylinder technique. However, for materials containing polymer binders, such as plastic bonded explosives, a constant confining pressure is used because these properties are found to significantly increase with this pressure. These results indicate the very significant role of the polymer binders in determining the mechanical properties of these energetic materials.

Book excerpt: The initial part of the uniaxial stress versus strain response in compression can be described in terms of an undamaged modulus, Eo, a peak stress, sigma(m) (a failure stress), and a strain at the peak stress, epsilon(m) (a failure strain). Sigma(m) increases in proportion to Eo and epsilon(m) is approximately constant with changes in temperature and strain rate for all of the composites considered. In addition, sigma(m) increases in proportion to Eo(exp 1/2) and epsilon(m) is proportional to 1/Eo(exp 1/2) for larger values of Eo for some of the composites. Brittle fracture is often, but not always, observed for the larger values of Eo. These results suggest two separate failure modes, and possible mechanisms for each mode are discussed.

Book excerpt: Recently, interest has been shown concerning the mechanical response of plastic-bonded explosives (PBX) and propellants to enable the development of predictive materials models describing the mechanical behavior of these composites. Accordingly, detailed information about the constitutive response is crucial. Compression measurements were conducted on two explosive formulation binders, extruded Estane{trademark} 5703 (hereafter referred to as Estane) and plasticized Estane as a function of temperature from -60 C to +23 C using a specially-designed split Hopkinson pressure bar (strain rate of (almost equal to) 2800 s−1) and quasi-stattically (strain rates from (almost equal to) 0.001 to 1 s−1) using a hydraulic load frame. The mechanical response of the Estane was found to exhibit a stronger dependency on strain rate and temperature and higher flow strength for similar test conditions of the materials tested. Plasticized Estane was less sensitively dependent on strain rate and temperature. The visco-elastic recovery of both binders is seen to dominate the mechanical behavior at temperatures above the glass transition temperature (T{sub g}). The binders exhibited increasing elastic loading moduli, E, with increasing strain rate or decreasing temperature, which is similar to other polymeric materials. There is a pronounced shift in the apparent T{sub g} to higher temperatures as the strain rate is increased. At low strain rates the binders exhibit a yield behavior followed by a drop in the flow stress which may or may not recover. At high strain rates the load drop does not occur and the flow stresses level out. A discussion of the Hopkinson bar technique as applied to polymeric or low impedance materials is described in detail.

Book excerpt: Composite plastic bonded explosive samples containing 80% and 85% HMX (cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine) in a polymer plastizer binder were produced by mixing, extruding, cutting, drying, and pressing. Before pressing, the extruded material was in some cases coated with a thin layer of graphite (approx. 1 micrometer) for ease in pressing. As part of a general study of these composites, the compressive strength was determined as a function of temperature, strain rate, and the amount of the graphite added. Without graphite, the compressive strength increases with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate. With graphite, this strength has the same behavior above approximately -10 deg C, but is insensitive to both temperature and strain rate below this temperature for a strain rate of 1.0/sec. In addition, the low temperature value of the compressive strength appears to decrease with increasing graphite thickness. The cracking and fracture patterns are temperature and strain rate dependent and are different with and without graphite. These results indicate that the bond produced by pressing the graphite containing material is stronger than the composite above about -10 deg C and weaker below this temperature so that failure initiates in the composite above about -10 deg C and in the bond below -10 deg C. With increasing strain rate this transition temperature increases. The results also indicate that the bond produced by pressing the material without graphite is at least as strong as the extruded material itself. (MM).

Book excerpt: An engineering overview of the mechanical response of Plastic-Bonded eXplosives (PBXs), specifically PBX 9501, will be provided with emphasis on observed mechanisms associated with different types of mechanical testing. Mechanical tests in the form of uniaxial tension, compression, cyclic loading, creep (compression and tension), and Hopkinson bar show strain rate and temperature dependence. A range of mechanical behavior is observed which includes small strain recoverable response in the form of viscoelasticity; change in stiffness and softening beyond peak strength due to damage in the form microcracks, debonding, void formation and the growth of existing voids; inelastic response in the form of irrecoverable strain as shown in cyclic tests, and viscoelastic creep combined with plastic response as demonstrated in creep and recovery tests. The main focus of this paper is to elucidate the challenges and issues involved in modeling the mechanical behavior of PBXs for simulating thermo-mechanical responses in engineering components. Examples of validation of a constitutive material model based on a few of the observed mechanisms will be demonstrated against three point bending, split Hopkinson pressure bar and Brazilian disk geometry.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight major mixes were prepared from three baseline binders. The tensile and torsional shear mechanical properties and burning behavior of these model mixes have been investigated. The binder-filler bond energy determined from the surface studies can be correlated to the energy required for the onset of dewetting. The specific impulses of the model mixes were calculated. Some of the model mixes containing energetic binder were difficult to ignite at low energy flux. This suggests that the formulations may be candidates for insensitive energetic systems.

Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture
