Book excerpt: In a few decades, a lot of research have been done to show the effect of nanoparticles in fiber polymer matrix composites. An investigation has been carried out to study the effect of clay addition on Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and flexural fatigue behavior of glass/epoxy composites. Nanoclay was dispersed in epoxy resin by a high speed homogenizer. Then, hand lay-up and autoclave curing were used to fabricate S-glass/epoxy/nanoclay laminates. Three point end notch flexural specimens were used to determine the interlaminar fracture toughness and flexural fatigue behavior. This study shows that the addition of 2wt% nanoclay into resin improves the Mode II strain energy release rate (GIIc) by 24% and 23% for non-precracked (NPC) and precracked (PC) tests respectively. Fatigue was done in displacement control mode. The results indicated that the crack initiated earlier for regular samples than the modified ones. First, the rate of crack propagation was fast then, it became slow until achieved to the stable condition. At 2wt% nanoclay, 59% and 5% reduction were obtained in the crack growth rate at two regions where the rate of crack propagation changes. SEM indicated the fracture surface of samples after the crack stopped growing. These images were illustrated that fatigue resistance of specimens with nanoclay were enhanced.

Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to evaluate the interlaminar fracture toughness, in terms of the total critical strain energy release rate (GTc), for unidirectional glass/epoxy composites under mixed Mode I + II loading. Several bending tests proposed in the literature, such as the DCB, MMF, ENF, and CLS tests, were performed. In addition, the mixed mode CBON and IDCB tests were developed. The combination of these tests gave fracture toughness results that covered a complete mixed mode range: 0

This book was released on 1989 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static and cyclic end-notched flexure (ENF) tests were conducted on three materials to determine their interlaminar shear fracture toughness and fatigue thresholds for delamination in terms of limiting values of the mode II strain energy release rate, GII, for delamination growth. Data were generated for three different materials: a T300/BP907 graphite/epoxy, an S2/SP250 glass/epoxy, and an AS4/PEEK (polyetheretherketone) graphite/thermoplastic. The influence of precracking and data reduction schemes on the mode II toughness and fatigue behavior is discussed. Finite-element analysis indicated that the beam theory calculation for GII with the transverse shear contribution included was reasonably accurate over the entire range of crack lengths. However, compliance measurements for the three materials tested and the variation in compliance with crack length differed from the beam theory predictions. For materials that exhibited linear load-deflection behavior, GIIc values determined from compliance calibration measurements provided the most conservative and accurate estimate of the interlaminar shear fracture toughness. Cyclic loading significantly reduced the critical GII for delamination. A threshold value of the maximum cyclic GII below which no delamination occurred after one million cycles was identified for each material to quantify the degradation in interlaminar shear fracture toughness in fatigue. In addition, residual static toughness tests were conducted on glass/epoxy specimens that had undergone one million cycles without delamination. These residual static tests, and the initial static tests on the tough AS4/PEEK graphite/thermoplastic, exhibited nonlinear load-deflection behavior. For these cases, the load at deviation from nonlinearity was used to determine the interlaminar shear fracture toughness. A linear mixed-mode delamination criterion was used to characterize the static toughness of several composite materials; however, a total G threshold criterion appears to be sufficient for characterizing the fatigue delamination durability of composite materials with a wide range of static toughnesses.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of the stress ratio on the propagation behavior of Mode II interlaminar fatigue cracks was studied with unidirectional graphite/epoxy laminates, Toray T800H/\3631. End-notched flexure (ENF) specimens were used for fatigue tests under the stress ratios of R = 0.2, 0.5, and 0.6; and end-loaded split (ELS) specimens were used for tests under R = -1.0, -0.5, and 0.2. For each stress ratio, the crack propagation rate was given by a power function of the stress intensity range, ?KII, in the region of rates above 10-9 m/cycle. Below this region, there exists the threshold for fatigue crack propagation. The threshold condition is given by a constant value of the stress intensity range, ?KIIth = 1.8 MPa?m. The crack propagation rate is determined by ?KII near the threshold, while by the maximum stress intensity factor, KIImax at high rates. A fracture mechanics equation is proposed for predicting the propagation rate of Mode II fatigue cracks under various stress ratios. The effect of the stress ratio on the micromechanisms of Mode II fatigue crack propagation was discussed on the basis of the microscopic observations of fracture surfaces and near-crack-tip regions.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mode I and Mode II fracture toughness between differently oriented plies in graphite/epoxy composites was characterized using DCB and ENF tests. GIc was almost the same for the 0/0, 30/-30, and 60/-60 interfaces. GIc for the 0/0 interface was approximately 30% higher than for the 30/-30 and 60/-60 interfaces when the crack initiation was characterized at the onset of nonlinear response. A remarkable increase of fracture toughness also appeared as the crack propagated. In addition, the rising rate of fracture toughness, dGR/da, increased as the fiber orientation at the crack front inclined away from the delamination direction. This was because angled plies at delaminated surfaces were apt to cause transverse cracking as the fiber orientation of the angled plies inclined away from the delamination direction. Consequently, the increase of fracture surface increased the fracture toughness.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the objectives, accomplishments and proposed new direction of research on mode II interlaminar fracture in resin matrix composites. A mode II interlaminar fracture specimen, test and analysis method for interpreting results have been successfully developed and demonstrated for the AS4/3502 material system. Experimental data have been obtained under both net tensile and compressive loading. Of considerable importance are the findings that the AS4/3502 material system show increasing resistance to crack growth in tension, 2) interlaminar fracture under compression is a totally unstable process, and 3) tension and compression behaviors are considerably different. The findings and the conclusions that are drawn from them point to new, promising directions. Complementary experiments on low cycle fatigue in tension and compression and on mode I suppression in tension have been performed. The former basically confirm the static findings. The latter illustrate the potential effectiveness of mode I suppression technology and help to clarify mixed mode fracture.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the design analysis and results of an experimental program that was conducted to evaluate mixed-mode and Mode II interlaminar fracture behavior of a resin matrix composite material system. A double cracked-lap-shear specimen was designed utilizing a simple, new analysis method. The specimen was made of AS4/3502 graphite/epoxy material with a [±45, 0, 90]6s quasi-isotropic balanced symmetric layup. The lap interface studied was at ±45° orientations to the loading direction. A fundamental feature of the designed specimen is its ability to be tested under net tensile and compressive loadings. The specimen exhibits mixed-mode or Mode II behavior depending on the loading direction. This paper summarizes the tension testing only. The crack growth during testing was monitored by observing the isochromatic fringes in photoelastic coatings mounted on the two lap surfaces. Preliminary results indicate that the fracture behavior follows a resistance curve. In order to assess the double cracked-lap-shear specimen data and test, a comparison was made with results obtained with single cracked-lap-shear specimens. Less scatter in the data from the double cracked-lap-shear specimens was found.
