Book excerpt: Satirist, humorist, Church of England vicar, and convert to Roman Catholicism, Edward Caswall (1814-1878) was one of the nineteenth century's most important hymnologists - posterity is indebted to him for both his original and translated hymns, including 'See, amid the winter's snow', 'Jesu, the very thought of thee', and 'At the Cross'. He was, moreover, the faithful financial and administrative mainstay of Newman's Oratory in Birmingham from the time of his conversion in 1847 until his death some thirty years later. This new biography of Edward Caswall is the first systematic investigation of the life and work of a man whose spiritual journey, from Anglicanism via Tractarianism to Roman Catholicism, exemplifies the personal and theological dilemmas experienced by many during that era. Based on extensive archival research, it will be welcomed by readers interested in Newman, nineteenth-century hymnody and poetry, and Victorian history. An important contribution to Newman studies. GERARD TRACEY, late archivist of the Birmingham Oratory Nancy de Flon steers the reader through the fascinating family background and Oxford years of her subject and does much to explain Caswall's own distinctive path to Rome before treating his fruitful Oratorian years . . . the particular strength of de Flon's study, however, is the extent to which she focuses on and draws out Caswall's outstanding literary, poetical, and devotional genius. PETER NOCKLES Nancy de Flon earned her Ph.D. in Church History from Union Theological Seminary in New York. Now an editor for Paulist Press, Nancy de Flon was formerly Visiting Professor of Church History at Union Seminary and Adjunct Professor of Church History at Long Island's Immaculate Conception Seminary. She has also taught at the Centre for Marian Studies at Lampeter in mid-Wales.

Book excerpt: Roman Catholic church music in England served the needs of a vigorous, vibrant and multi-faceted community that grew from about 70,000 to 1.7 million people during the long nineteenth century. Contemporary literature of all kinds abounds, along with numerous collections of sheet music, some running to hundreds, occasionally even thousands, of separate pieces, many of which have since been forgotten. Apart from compositions in the latest Classical Viennese styles and their successors, much of the music performed constituted a revival or imitation of older musical genres, especially plainchant and Renaissance Polyphony. Furthermore, many pieces that had originally been intended to be performed by professional musicians for the benefit of privileged royal, aristocratic or high ecclesiastical elites were repackaged for rendition by amateurs before largely working or lower middle class congregations, many of them Irish. However, outside Catholic circles, little attention has been paid to this subject. Consequently, the achievements and widespread popularity of many composers (such as Joseph Egbert Turner, Henry George Nixon or John Richardson) within the English Catholic community have passed largely unnoticed. Worse still, much of the evidence is rapidly disappearing, partly because it no longer seems relevant to the needs of the modern Catholic Church in England. This book provides a framework of the main aspects of Catholic church music in this period, showing how and why it developed in the way it did. Dr Muir sets the music in its historical, liturgical and legal context, pointing to the ways in which the music itself can be used as evidence to throw light on the changing character of English Catholicism. As a result the book will appeal not only to scholars and students working in the field, but also to church musicians, liturgists, historians, ecclesiastics and other interested Catholic and non-Catholic parties.

Book excerpt: D.H. Lawrence, writing of the poems that had meant most to him, said that they were `still not woven so deep in me as the rather banal Nonconformist hymns that penetrated through and through my childhood'. It is not easy to account for this, and most writing about hymns has not helped because it has concentrated on their content and function in worship and liturgy. In the present book the author tries to account for feelings like Lawrence's by examining the hymn form and its progress through the centuries from the Reformation to the present day. He begins by discussing the status of a hymn text and relates it to the demands made upon it by the needs of singing. A chronological study then traces the development of the English hymn, from the metrical psalms of the Reformation, through the seventeenth century and Isaac Watts to the Wesleys, Cowper, Toplady, and others, and then to the great flood of hymn writing that occurred during the Victorian period, together with the great success of Hymns Ancient and Modern. There are chapters on American hymnody and women's hymn writing, and sections on gospel hymns and the translation of German hymnody. A final chapter takes the story into the twentieth century, with a brief postscript on the revival of hymn writing since 1960.

Book excerpt: This volume, the latest in Oxford's edition of The Collected Works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, presents Hopkins at his most private and self-considering: there are mundane memoranda about neckties to purchase or letters to write, but also exacting revisions of poems. There are entries of quiet rapture, his attention caught by the unexpected sight of a bluebell or "some delicate flying shafted ashes...between which the sun sent straight bright slenderish panes of silver sunbeams down the slant towards the eye." Paintings, sculptures, and works of literature are stringently assessed, his aesthetic principles freely exercised. There are also nightmares relived; undergraduate "sins" unsparingly recorded; "signs" of heavenly mercy carefully noted; small acts of "kindness" from others, both unexpected and restorative, gratefully acknowledged. Like most diarists, Hopkins was committed to life-writing practices not simply to itemize his daily activities, but to explore the possibilities of textual "selving." The space of the page was the opportunity, incitement, and necessity of reporting what had been seen, what had been felt, what had been feared, in order both to memorialize the experiences and to make possible subsequent re-readings. Thus, the diaries and notebooks are a summary of the present and an investment in-even a prediction of-future responses. The entries extend from September 1863, during his second term at Oxford, until February 1875, while studying theology as a Jesuit in his beloved Wales, and from February 1884 until July 1885, while Hopkins was living at a "third remove" in Dublin, Ireland as a Classics Professor at University College and Fellow of the Royal University of Ireland.

Book excerpt: Many books exist devoted to the life, thought, and writings of Blessed John Henry Newman, the premier Catholic theologian in nineteenth-century England. His influence has been enormous, perhaps especially on Vatican II (1962–65). This book is a Newman primer, and not only a primer about Newman himself, but also about his time and place in church history. It attends to the papacy during his lifetime, his companions and friends, some of his peers at Oxford University, the First Vatican Council (1869–70), as well as some of his writing and theology. It should be especially helpful to an interested reader who has no particular background in nineteenth-century church history or in Newman himself.
